I am a british royal marine who has been to afghanistan. this would not work

sokamiwohali in reply to ultrablacksmithJan 17, 2011. 3:55 PM
as a fellow combatant, i thank you for your service. i am in the US Army myself which is why i havent been on this site for a long time (training sucks). i understand that this particular kit would not work 100% in afghanistan although it is a start. remember, any one of these survival kits you would find on this website IS ONLY A BASIC blueprint for a better, more efficient kit. I have actually taken the survival fishing kit and found an ACU print pouch and mounted it and the kit on my IOTV so if anything happens to me, i will have at least the basic essentials to make a shelter, trap, etc.

With all due respect, being part of the Royal Marines, you should know this and have it engrained into your mind that all we need to have is the basics to start with. ESPECIALLY with our jobs. in fact, i carry IN EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY at least 10-20 ft. worth of 7 strand 550 Parachute Cord. i may never use this stuff for anything at all, but it will at least be there if i need it...in my ruck sack, assault pack, a small bundle attached via gremlin lock to the webbing of my Ballistics...in my car...can never be too prepared...
TheInventor1997 in reply to ultrablacksmithJun 10, 2010. 5:42 PM
well, mr marine who has been to afghanistan, what would you recommend?
Redlulu in reply to ultrablacksmithJun 3, 2010. 11:05 AM
I'm very interested in your thoughts as to what would work.
Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to ultrablacksmithApr 21, 2010. 11:35 AM
this is more of a woodland survival kit, not a desert based one.
sokamiwohali says: Jul 25, 2009. 5:14 PM
being lazy with survival can get you killed. it took me 7 years to make my survival kit because i didnt think that it wasnt right...no energy bars, or pre-packaged water, or not enough rope...i now have 2 survival kits...a fishing kit (which you can find on here, and a professional kit that i just bought...that alows it was worth the investment...it frovides limited food and water, some sort of shelter, rope, and basic essentials. thats where the kit i made comes in...no matter what, i can get some sort of animal to eat if available, and theres a wide range that i can catch with just a little rope a hook, and mono-filament.

cool. i am an eagle scout. what rank are you? i too have the survival merit badge...i was the most prepared when they put us out in the forest for our one-night stay in a wilderness survival shelter that we had to build ourselves. i took the bare minimum that i needed...water, rope, a few matches, knifeand a couple snacks. heres a hint though...dont be lazy when writing your instructables...it just robs everyone else of the knowledge you have to share with them...believe it or not, i love to learn from the younger scouts because they do have their good ideas...thats what scouting is all about...to be a leader, one must follow... if you would like some of the knowledge i have gained from scouting, please feel free to ask. i have learned alot since i was in scouts. Once an Eagle Always an Eagle.

Your post reminded me of something I had intended to mention before. If you have room, one of the handier things you can take in your survival or bug out bag is a Boy Scout handbook, especially one of the older ones. I have mine from 1961, which has a lot of good information, and my cousin's from the 1950s, which is even better. There is information on snake identification, trees, shelters, map reading, land navigation - all kinds of stuff. The only caveat I would offer is regarding the first aid material - it has changed dramatically since then and the information presented, especially on CPR (which didn't exist back then) is totally wrong.
Believe it or not, things I learned in Scouting served me well in the Army, and even now, in my present job, I use some of the information and skills from time to time.
sokamiwohali in reply to RangerJNov 25, 2011. 7:16 PM
haha are you a retiree? what was the highest rank you obtained? i got out the day i was supposed to be promoted to Spec. Yeah alot of things from Boy Scouts is always useful in the Army/Military.

Indeed. Imagine if Einstein had been lazy with his writings. "Well, you know, there's like, the speed of light and stuff... you'll figure it out." The more detailed the instructables the better. How about an instructable on, not just what to bring, but how to use these things in a survival situation?
Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to sokamiwohaliJul 28, 2009. 10:29 AM
I am first class. I also brought bare minimum all I had was a water bottle, a knife, flint and steel, and some rope. the instructable was just a quick thing that I made one night out of boredom. what troop are you in.
sokamiwohali in reply to ThelonelysandwitchJul 28, 2009. 9:09 PM
well, i am not in a troop right now. i can only be an assistant/ (soon may qualify) scoutmaster. i really liked being in the scouting program. i am not OFFICIALLY enrolled into the scouting program as an adult leader, but i am a behind the scenes recruiter/ encourager of geting into the scouting program and earning eagle. right now my focus is the cub scouts. they often need the most encouragement cause they reach a "boring" pinnacle where they think that they arent having fun. boy scouts are the easiest to keep in usually. but i do still consider mysefl to still being in the scouting program...once in, never out. what troop are you with and what town is it based?
Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to sokamiwohaliJul 29, 2009. 9:59 AM
Im in troop 70 based in ocean county, its a fun troop.
sokamiwohali in reply to ThelonelysandwitchJul 29, 2009. 10:57 AM
cool...how many in attendance? is it a big troop or about like 10-20 boys? i personally like the smaller troops because you have a better chance of 1 on 1 teaching. but i dont judge...a troop is a troop, and as long as everyone has fun, thats all that matters.. lol...i one day told my wife that i should go hunting or something, and purposely get lost so i had to survive off of what i had for 3-4 days or so...lol...she didnt like that comment much. hahaha...
Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to sokamiwohaliJul 30, 2009. 7:55 PM
yeah thats great. My troop has like 45 boys and will have close to 65 by next year. its getting packed.
JMan5 in reply to ThelonelysandwitchNov 23, 2009. 7:56 PM
I also am a boy scout. Rank of Eagle, Troop 188. We have about 20-40 boys, depending on how interesting our meeting will be.
Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to JMan5Nov 24, 2009. 12:25 PM

JMan5 in reply to ThelonelysandwitchNov 24, 2009. 2:48 PM

condoms for water  storage honestly what happened to BOTTLES
TheInventor1997 in reply to evilpyroJun 10, 2010. 5:43 PM
yes, who's idea was using condoms as water storage, heck you could put all your survival stuff in it, AND its waterproof!
thefoodman in reply to evilpyroMay 15, 2010. 3:46 PM
You can't fit a water bottle in an Altoids tin.

Thelonelysandwitch (author) in reply to evilpyroFeb 22, 2010. 5:19 PM
Yah, but what if the bottles are in use and you come across some more water and you need to store it, or you just dont feel like using the bottles lol. it all depends on the user.
