One of my favorite hints for proofreading for spelling is to read the piece backwards. This forces you to look at every word individually instead of glossing over them because your brain knows how they are supposed to be spelled. With spell check I suppose this is an outdated practice, but I always seemed to find a couple mistakes when I did use it.
