“This Old Man” is a fun song to play on the piano - and easy to learn with this piano tutorial!

The origins of the traditional children's song and nursery rhyme are not exactly clear - the British folk song collector Anne Gilchrist published it for the first time in 1937, and apparently she learned it from her nurse in the 1870s.

in 1948, Anne Gilchrist received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her contributions to folk songs and dances.

“This Old Man” was originally titled “"Jack Jintle" and began with the lines:

“My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but one, And I can play nick-nack upon my own thumb.”

In the meantime, both the title and the lyrics of the song changed, and today most people sing the first verse like this:

“This old man, he played one, He played knick-knack on my thumb; With a knick-knack paddywhack, Give the dog a bone,This old man came rolling home.”
