Apartment living is nice and all (it means not having to worry as much about clogged drains, etc.), but it also sometimes means not having loads of space to stretch your creativity legs. While I really do love my apartment, space-constraints (and monetary ones as well!) mean having to improvise when it comes to places to work on projects.
  • "Cooking Station": A rescued cart from an office, topped with a specially cut piece of granite remnant. I originally had a piece of wood cut to fit the top but had really wanted granite, and finally made that jump recently (cannot be happier - it's awesome for pie crusts, etc.). The shelves of the cart hold baking essentials (flour, sugar, etc.); lots of cookbooks; as well as three helpful Henriettas (why pick on people named "Susan"? Surely they're not all lazy) which contain herbs and spices, mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, and various oils and vinegars. Just behind the cart is the fridge, the front and side of which house pictures of friends and family, a magnetic kitchen timer or two, a magnetic hook for aprons, and up on top an office file rack to hold frequently used pans (cookie sheets and muffin tins) and a cutting board or two. I keep things like salt and pepper, and olive oil and balsamic up on top of the cart, along with two knives that I use most frequently (massive clever and smaller ceramic knife) and a mortar and pestle. Just beyond the backside of the cart is a table that serves as a place for me to keep my other knives, as well as the. . .
  • "Gardening Station": A "found" table, after being cleaned up, now serves as home for my plants. I kind of have a thing for plants (I grew up in the city but always had a backyard, so it's kind of tough not having one), so it's super important to me to have some green space in my apartment. In pots (I like these which are made from grain fibers) I've got dwarf orange, lemon, and lime; bay laurel; and aloe vera. I also have one of those weird hydroponic garden things for growing herbs (they frequently don't do well - it does provide lots of light for the other plants though) and some blocks of recycled coffee grounds for growing mushrooms.
  • "Sewing Station": On a cool old desk sits my trusty sewing machine. There's not a ton else to say about it, other than it also features a few large, deep drawers for other crafty-type supplies (cutting mats, glue, etc.), and a top drawer that's great for thread, needles and pins, and scissors.

While I really like my tiny scattered workspaces, I'd love to be able to revamp them a little and get some items for other areas around my mini home.
  1. Some shelves or some type of tall cabinet for the small-ish, closet-ish area near my front door would be awesome to allow me to store things without having to clutter up every flat surface. A bookcase or two would also be great (I already have a few, but I've got loads and loads of books).
  2. I'd also really love a new chair for my cozy little sewing area, since the folding metal one tends to get a bit cold and uncomfortable after a while.
  3. My mom and dad would both like for me to get some kind of little dining table, but I tend to think that should probably wait until I have a proper dining room (i.e., more space).
  4. More than anything else, I'd love to get a new sofa to replace my current Ikea sofa (which I love - it's served me well for going on 4 years). Sadly it was damaged in a move and the right side started leaning out and bent the legs, so it now sits on cinder blocks with a fancy little homemade skirt to cover them.
In addition to those specific items, there are loads of other things (both small and large) that I would happily welcome into my itty bitty little home.

I love to see how people make the most of their small spaces. My solution is to put wheels on everything. It adds flexibility- I roll out my sewing table, I roll back my couch so I can use the floor as a cutting table, it goes on...
