Try buttering the outside, yes the outside, of both pieces of bread and you will end up with a traditional British cheese and ham toastie. Believe it or not, most of the butter will have been forced into the bread by the heat! Two alternative traditional toasties are 'cheese and tomato' and 'cheese and onion'. For the 'cheese and onion', the onion goes in raw.
