Introduction: Tornado in a Jar

In this quick instructable, I'm gonna show you how to make your own tornado in a jar...
Here are my answers to the Make-to-Learn Youth Contest:

1.What did you make?
I made a really simple tornado in a jar. What happens is that as you twist the jar, the water inside up against the glass is pulled along due to its friction again the glass walls. The fluid toward the inside takes longer to get moving. But eventually both the glass jar and the fluid are spinning as you rotate the bottle. When you stop rotating the jar, the fluid inside keeps spinning.
I've always wanted to do that. Never thought anything that close to a realistic-looking tornado would turn out that way.

2.How did you make it?
I googled it a while ago, but the way I followed (the one i found online) didn't exactly show the tornado itself. So i had to add a little coloring after experimenting with some other stuff and guess what? The tornado now looks better than before!

3.Where did you make it?
I made this project at home. Very easy and simple! I took it the next day and showed it to the rest of my class. It came right on time since we were learning about forces then!

4.What did you learn?
I learned about forces and i was able to connect what I'm learning to this experiment, thus understanding the concept of friction and forces even more!

Step 1: What You Need

You will need:
1 jar with lid (around 8oz.)
Tablespoon
Water
Dish soap
Vinegar
Optional but highly recommended: Coloring and/or glitter

Step 2:

Fill 3/4 of the jar with water, then add 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

Optional: add a drop or 2 of coloring and a pinch of glitter!

Step 3: Twist

Now, close the lid and twist the jar and watch the magic happen!
Enjoy!
