Introduction: Totoro Papercraft

In this tutorial I will introduce you to papercraft with a totoro model. This model is easy to make. I provide the link that I found online, for printing.

Step 1: Tools and Resources Preparation

In this tutorial I will show you how to do a totoro papercraft. I found this model online, I will provide you with the links below.

Blue Totoro: http://studioofmm.blogspot.com/2011/03/blue-totoro...

White Totoro: http://studioofmm.blogspot.com/2011/03/white-totor...

The way of assembling the three of them is basically the same, so we will work with the grey totoro in this tutorial. First I list the materials we will need:

  • Bobby pin
  • Inkless pen
  • Bottle cap
  • Ruler
  • Glue
  • Sccissors
  1. Start by cutting all the pieces.
  2. Once you're done with that we need to fold all the tabs, help yourself with a ruler and an inkless pen to make it easier to fold, as shown in the pictures.

  3. Fill the bottle cap with enough amount of glue, and unfold a bobby pin to apply glue on the tabs.

Step 2: Arms

We will start with both arms. Follow the sequence in the pictures and repeat for the second arm. Notice that I didn´t close the arm so I can later attach it to the body.

Step 3: Tail

Next is the tail. Follow sequence on images. I recomend that you glue a tab one at a time, as well as just using the right amount of glue so it takes less to dry and prevent it from looking messy. Once you finish one side, the other side is the same to assemble.

Step 4: Ears

Start off with the second triangular tab, from left to right, as shown in the images above. Once done with that glue the large tab and close the ear. Lastly glue the triangular tab that you did not glue at the beginning, and help it in with the bobby pin. Repeat for the other ear.

Step 5: Face

This step is fairly easy, just glue the four tabs as shown, and leave it for now to work with it on later steps.

Step 6: Head

For the head, make sure to glue only the tabs as it is shown in the images; this because the others are to attach the face with the head. Repeat the same steps for both sides.

Step 7: Attaching Face With Head

Start by identifying which side must go up and down. You can easily find out by comparing the tabs on both pieces. The tabs must not overlap. Once you identify the position of the pieces, follow the sequence on the images to glue them together. Once you reach the middle after the first eye, repeat the same steps from the eye until you close the head, as shown.

Step 8: Attaching Ears and Whiskers to Head.

Before gluing the ears, test the position where it should go. Once you know, proceed to glue the ears and attach them to the head. Attach the whiskers as it is shown on the images., and you are done with the head.

Step 9: Stomach

Start with the top part, because it has a higher level of difficulty. Glue each tab as it is shown, once you reach the middle, repeat for the other side. When done with the upper part of the stomach, go to bottom, and glue as shown in the images until you finish. Leave, as we will need this piece to attach to the back piece.

Step 10: Back

For the first part of this piece I recommend applying glue to the three tabs at once, since it will make it easier for it to hold when the three are attached at once. Continue attaching the bottom tabs until you achieve a round shape.

Step 11: Attaching the Stomach and the Back Together

As I mentioned before, when attaching two pieces together, the most important thing is to know how the pieces will fit together; looking if the tabs do not overlap is an easy way to find out. Once you know the position of the pieces, glue tab by tab with one another. Repeat on the other side, until you close the body.

Step 12: Feet

For the feet, start by folding the nails. Apply glue to the flat piece, and then drop the nail on top. Help accommodate the nail with the bobby pin. This may take a while, so be patient. Repeat for the other seven nails.

Step 13: Attaching Tail, Arms, Feet and Head to Body.

  1. Tail: close the tail as shown in the picture, then attach it to the body.
  2. Arms: Apply glue to the white part of the body and attach to the white tab on the arm, close by applying glue to the smaller tab and closing the arm.
  3. Feet: glue the feet to the tabs at the bottom of the body.
  4. Lastly, apply a small amount of glue to inner part of the head and attach to the body.
