Introduction: Traffic Light

Picture of Traffic Light

This is a stuffed traffic light. The lights turn on with separate switches. For this project, you will need red, yellow, green, and black felt, stuffing, a sewing needle, red, yellow, and green thread (they do not have to be separate colors, this is just so it matches the felt), conductive thread, three LEDs in red, yellow, and green, and a battery with a sewable battery holder.

Step 1: Step 1: Begin Square

Picture of Step 1: Begin Square

With the red felt, cut out two congruent squares with side length about 2.5 inches. Sew them together but leave a small hole about 1 inch wide.

Step 2: Step 2: Finish Square

Now, stuff the square firmly, and sew up the rest of the square until it is closed.

Step 3: Step 3: Make Other Squares

Make two other squares about the same size with yellow felt and green felt.

Step 4: Step 4: Sew Squares Together

Sew the three squares together. Also cut a black piece of felt about 2 inches by 9 inches.

Step 5: Step 5: Finishing (this Is the Most Complicated Step)

Use conductive thread to sew the black piece of felt to the traffic light, making three parallel circuits. Use pliers to twist the ends of the LED into circular shapes that thread can go through. In each of these circuits, there will be an LED on the front of the traffic light, and a switch to turn the LED on and off on the back. (look at the picture) IMPORTANT: When sewing on the LED, make sure each side is connected to the correct side of the battery (positive to positive, negative to negative), and make sure that the positive and negative ends of the LED are NOT connected. Also, the positive and negative ends of the battery should not be connected.
