Introduction: Trashy $1.00 LAMP
In this process you will attempt to create a lamp similar to the exquisite one above using only $1 USD.
Step 1: COLLECT AND AQUIRE
- Soccer Ball (interior black rubber + hardened exterior)
- Wire (8 gauge)
- Cans (beer and or soda)
- Discarded metallic lamp fixture (for conductor from wire to bulb)
- Metal tubbing
- Wall Cord
- Elastic string
ADDITIONAL ITEMS USED TO MOLD & FABRICATE:
- Wire Cutters
- Wire Clamps
- E6000 Glue
- Standard Hot Glue Gun
- Hot Glue Sticks

Step 2: FRAMING THE WIRE
Construct initial frame of lamp using found wire.
- Using your found wire, cut an appropriate length for spiral, this should be about the same size as the ball you are going to use.
- Bend wire as to create a concentric spiral that elevates in mold of ball.
- Bend arms around spiral structure to strengthen frame. (its okay if arms are too long or short)
- Wrap the end of the arms around the spiral reinforcing position.
Step 3: PART I: INTERIOR ROOF OF LAMP: REFLECTIVE BEER CAN EFFECT
This step will require approximately 4 to 7 metallic cans such as the one presented above in the first picture.
* NOTE * BE SURE TO WEAR GLOVES DURING THIS PROCESSES AS THE CANS CAN ACT AS CUTTING DEVICES IF HANDLED POORLY *
- Cut strips out of the sides of beer cans that best accurately mimic the smaller quadrilateral shapes within the wire frame.
- (make metallic shapes around 2 to 3 cm larger on all sides for later folding)
- Place metallic sheet on desired position with reflective side down.
- Fold over additional sides around wire strengthening and allowing the piece to be self-supportive.
- Continue on all upper layers until top of wire structure is covered.
- Allow for bottom rim to be untouched as illustrated above.
Step 4: PART Ii: INTERIOR ROOF OF LAMP: REFLECTIVE BEER CAN EFFECT FINISHED
Once all metallic strips from the cans are attached you can begin to flatten and create a curve that reflects the interior up the wire frame.
Eliminate all gaps using hot glue gun.
Once finished, you should be able to turn the lamp upside down and eat cereal out of it without leakage.
Step 5: ADDING LAMP SOCKET
Depending on where one has received his, hers, thems or zs lamp socket this step may vary as I was fortunate enough to discover a socket already conjoined with an attachable extension.
Attempt to find a socket with an attachable extension (preferably one that is permitted to bend).
In combining the socket (with extinction), one must find the appropriate place within the frame to insert the latter.
* This step of the process determines the front and back sides of the lamp to choose wisely as the lamp is not entirely asymmetrical. *
Bend the extinction as to parallel the curvature of the bottom rim.
Insert socket and curved extension into frame. Curve extension over wired arms as previously performed with cans. Add additional wires and or hot glue if further support is needed.
Step 6: COVERING BOWL WITH BALL
For this step one must
- Bifurcate the soccer ball into two equal half's (approximately). Allow for pump section of soccer ball to be on the circumference of cutting area.
- Separate the black rubber interior of the ball and the soft white exterior.
- Apply black rubber half of soccer ball over the wired frame with socket and reflective qualities already in place.
- Feed the wires from the socket through the soccer balls pump allowing for a sturdy holding place of electric circuits
- Fold bottom of black rubber soccer ball over exposed bottom rim of wire frame. Use black (elastic is possible) sewing string and sew a 2 thread cover stitch along brim.
- Repeat step 5 with exterior white, soft, half of soccer ball.

Step 7: TAKING a STAND; PARTS I & Ii
In addition to my lamp socket was a series miscellaneous metallic accessories, one of which being an adjustable lever.
Using various screws as levers I was able to continue and use this adjustability of the accessories to my advantage, folding it over and creating the first component of my stand.
Bent in two places the stand serves as a controlled raiser as well the supporter of the soccer lamp itself. In attaching the frame to the stand, one may use hot glue, wire, or additional support already in place within the interior socket section of the lamp.
Taking a clamp, use any household extra-cohesive super glue (E6000 Glue is the creators preferred market brand) and attach the previously build stand (with lamp to) to upper half grip of the clamp. Hold tightly until glue has dried.
Step 8: BRIGHT IDEAS, WELDING WIRES, AND MAKING CONNECTIONS
Using the large spiral metallic tube, cover exposed wires and bring to top of lamp.
To attach wire protector to lamp, simply turn the spiral end into the rubber blowhole of soccer ball clockwise until stuck. No glue needed.
At the bottom of the exposed wires should lie two loose ends. Using the copper part of the wires attach to the end of your average wall cord. To attach the two ends of the wire (from lamp) to the opposing two ends of wire (from cord), twist copper end sections together as shown in photographs above and weld using simple welding process for further strengthening. Cover exposed copper segments with electrical tape if needed.
Insert bulb into socket.
Ask friend to plug in.
Step 9: SPENDING YOUR SAVED DOLLAR
Now that you have both a lamp and a dollar, you have both light and equity.
