Charging batteries can cause fires and other trouble, if you're not careful. Each battery chemistry is different and some of them must be charged according to a certain procedure.

Basically, it's because the Battery charger IC in the phone expects a proper Li-ion cell to be found. These cells have circuitry not found in your AA battery pack. So, when you go to charge it, the charger IC says "battery's malfunctioned, do nothing". On the other hand, while the batteries are between 3 and 3.6 volt, the phone will OPERATE, because the phone's circuitry sees a proper voltage.

I have the same phone and use it daily. The akku loads just fine and has enough juice for a week. However, it's very cheap and therefore a very good candidate for experiments.

As for the design, yes, it's no iPhone. But the batteries don't make it better ;).
