Before you begin your Twitter experience, there are a few terms that you will frequently encounter, both in these instructions and while using Twitter. We think it is essential that you know the following:
@: The @ sign is used to call out usernames in Tweets, like this: Hello @Twitter! When a username is preceded by the @ sign, it becomes a link to a Twitter profile. This is referred to as tagging.
Follow: To follow someone on Twitter means to subscribe to their tweets on the site.
Hashtag: A hashtag involves putting a # symbol in front of a word to make it as a keyword or topic within a tweet.
Lists: Lists are groups of other Twitter users used to tie specific individuals into a group on your Twitter account. These lists are displayed on the right side of your homepage.
Retweet: Retweet (or retweeting) is the act of forwarding another user’s tweets to all of your followers.
Tweet: A message posted via Twitter containing 140 characters or fewer.

Note: If you already have a Twitter account, you may skip to TASK TWO.

A. Go to www.twitter.com. This will take you to the Twitter home page.

B. Find the yellow SIGN UP button and click it.

C. Your browser will take you to the JOIN THE CONVERSATION page. Fill out the Full name, Username, Password, and Email fields. Once you have finished, click CREATE MY ACCOUNT.

Note C.1: When choosing a Username, make sure to keep it professional.
Rather than 2Qt4U, we strongly suggest a combination of your name/birthday
(for example: JSmith05)

Note C.2: Under the CREATE MY ACCOUNT button, there is a checkbox that
says “I want the inside scoop- please send me email updates.” If you DO
NOT want to be emailed by Twitter, you should uncheck this box now
.

D. Once you have clicked CREATE MY ACCOUNT, you will receive a pop up box that asks you to type a couple of words. Type the words you see, and then click FINISH.

Note D.1: Once you have created your Twitter account, you will receive an
email, at the address you provided, asking you to confirm your account.
Follow the steps in the email to make sure that your account is confirmed.

E. Twitter will then take you to the first of three steps to finish. If you would like, you may complete these three steps, but for the sake of this tutorial, we will have you skip them. Now, CLICK the Twitter logo at the top of the page (it will take you to your home page).

Nicely done! I have no Twitter account so this made it look so easy, and I thought it would be more complicated but the steps were really easy to follow. Helpful pictures and well-written. I might actually twit now, or be a tweeter.

It's pretty cool what a social networking site can do on a level much different than chatting with and following friends. Would companies really look at a resume through Twitter though?
christinel says: Oct 13, 2010. 9:45 PM
This video was really usefull.
christinel says: Oct 13, 2010. 9:44 PM
These lists will be helpful. I didn't really know much about them and now I plan on using them for people to follow and a separate category for companies that I'm interested in following in or working for.

I knew companies used Twitter but I never thought it could be used as a way of finding a job! This is a neat way to find a job by using the 'social network' scene. Do a lot of companies use Twitter to post jobs? Now I see that Twitter isn't used to just see what your friends are up to

Not having a Twitter, setting one up was really easy with these helpful and detailed instructions!
romerocchi says: Oct 13, 2010. 9:07 PM
This is sort of a dense list of instructions. However, they were clear enough so that I completed this task without any problems.
I feel like the instructions for filling out all the fields for the resume was very thorough and helped me to complete it more quickly.
romerocchi says: Oct 13, 2010. 8:42 PM
Again, these instructions did not work all that great because I am on the new twitter. I had to look around a bit before I found the right links to click on. However, once I found the correct links I was able to quickly create an organized jobs list. I also kind I wondered why you mentioned changing the setting to private. Could you explain why that would be important to do?
romerocchi says: Oct 13, 2010. 8:34 PM
Because I was using the new version of twitter, I found that the search box was not on the right hand side of the page, but actually at the top toward the middle. Also, are there ways to break down the search even further? Many of my search results were not companies, but other people looking for the same jobs, or just fans of Justin Bieber.

The instructions were thorough and clear. Had I not already been familiar with using sites such as twitter, I think they would have been very helpful to me. I also think the glossary is a plus, as I did not know what a hashtag was.
marcofasho says: Oct 13, 2010. 1:08 PM
what's the part of a hashtag though? Not really understanding the purpose
marcofasho says: Oct 13, 2010. 1:07 PM
Are companies really using twitter to find candidates for jobs? Don't know if I would use that.
marcofasho says: Oct 13, 2010. 1:06 PM
honestly i've been using twitter for a while never and never used lists. It seemed too annoying but now it seems useful.
marcofasho says: Oct 13, 2010. 1:05 PM
never really understood the search engine. Now it makes sense
EdCody says: Oct 13, 2010. 12:53 PM
I really appreciate the glossary in the "Intro".
EdCody says: Oct 13, 2010. 12:51 PM
Sure makes something that looks daunting very simple.
It appears that the second graphic in "Step 1" is repeated.
EdCody says: Oct 13, 2010. 12:49 PM
Excellent tutorial. Twitter can be very intimidating to a new user. This tutorial certainly makes it easy to get started and put Twitter to good use.
SnaveZ says: Oct 12, 2010. 4:42 PM
submitted! Excellent tutorial! Thanks!
SnaveZ says: Oct 12, 2010. 4:41 PM
possibly a little better explanation on the Privacy settings
it would help out the user understand better with each setting....etc
SnaveZ says: Oct 12, 2010. 4:37 PM
Breakdown of the Search made it a lot easier to understand
SnaveZ says: Oct 12, 2010. 4:35 PM
Instructions made sense for creating a Twitter Account. Easy!
