This is a short tutorial on one method of needle tatting with two colors. The pattern I begin is R 3ds-3ds-3ds-3ds, chain 3ds-3ds-3ds-3ds joining at the side picots for a total of 7 rings and chains.

Help! This is fantastic and I have it all except the tie it facing you vs. tie it away from you part. I'm starting my 5th brown ring and I just can't get the tying so that the colors are on the right sides. Can you help me with that?

At about 1:56 on the video is where I tie the piece 'facing you' with one thread going over, around and through. When you turn and tie, you do just that, flip the piece over so that the two threads cross and tie a normal knot...I hope that helps.

I was inspired by your tatting work and finally after all this time and having tatting shuttles about, I found I could do it on needles like you described. My only drawback is that of keeping the loops the same size even though the knots seem to come out the right size. I cant seem to tell until I get further into a piece that my scale is somehow off. Here is a photo of my tiny turtle motif

Very nice! Tension in needle tatting is just a matter of practice. It's not just working the stitches evenly, it's pulling them off and tightening them at the same tension, so it just takes some time to get the feel for it.

Thanks for the tips. I really love needle tatting. I will try other small patterns before trying anything larger. It is a great way to relax too, if you don't get too worried about how its supposed to look and just try it.
