Introduction: Two Ingredient, Edible Finger Paints

An easy recipe for edible, washable, and fun finger paint for kids and adults alike.

Kids and especially young kids, love to explore the world through touch and taste. Finger paints were an excellent invention, allowing youngsters to create art, explore colors, and get messy. The problem? Paint can often end up in their mouths as they create and explore. This Instructable is a simple how to for not only edible, but washable finger paint for kids. Kids will love it, and parents/guardians can feel good about it.

Step 1: Things You'll Need

This recipe is simple, you'll only need the following two ingredients:
  • Plain or Vanilla Yogurt
  • Food Coloring*
And the following materials:
  • Bowls
  • Paper or Wax Paper
  • Spoon
*You can substitute with kool-aid, or natural food colorings/gels.

Step 2: Yogurt

Spoon your yogurt into your mixing bowls. Start small as you can always add more.

NOTE: You'll want a white or lighter colored yogurt so that it takes on the color from the food coloring. I chose a yogurt with live cultures and so it can present a little chunky. Those chunks will go away with a little stirring on your part, or you can choose to go with a smoother yogurt when you are purchasing it.

Step 3: Color

For 1 teaspoon of yogurt, I added three drops of food coloring.

Using a spoon or even your finger, mix up your yogurt paints until the colors are uniform and you are pleased with the tints.

Add more food coloring if you would like your edible finger paints to be darker. Remember, it's easier to add a tiny drop of food coloring to see a huge change in the darkness of the color. It takes quite a bit of yogurt to lighten your yogurt paint however.

Step 4: Start Painting!

Now that your paints are done, you can start painting! These paints do work on printer paper, although the moisture of the yogurt can bleed through, so make sure you have something underneath it. I also like to paint on wax paper.

When you're done, the clean up is easy. Start licking your fingers, the paints are finger licking good.
