Introduction: Two Tone Clay Mask

a fun and easy decorative mask to make using two different colors of clay. I made these ceramic masks using red and white grog. and glazed and fired them. This project could be adapted to any type of clay.

Step 3: Supplies

Red clay
White clay
clay tools
board
plastic bag
clear glaze
(access to kiln, if you use ceramic clay)

Step 4: Begin Handbuilding

I started with the red clay

Step 5: Mouth

I opened a large area that will become the mouth

Step 6: Nose

I shaped a nose for the mask

Step 7:

score the clay

Step 8:

rub slip (very wet clay) on scoring area and attatch to mask

Step 9:

place mask over mounded shape, open holes for eyes

Step 10:

create eyelids

Step 11: Ears

make the ears, score and slip the pieces in place on mask

Step 12: Hair

add hair

Step 13: Holes

be sure to make holes for hanging

Step 14: Cover

place the mask on a board and wrap in plastic for several days so the clay becomes leathery.

Step 15: White Clay

use white clay to make eyeballs and teeth

Step 16:

working on the back of the mask place eyes in eyeholes and gently smear the clay so the pieces stay in place.

Step 17: Add the Teeth

Step 18: Finished

glaze and fire to finish mask or let air dry.
