As I'm doing and accumulating things, I have less and less space in my house for them. Nothing new under the sun. I joked that it is a way to make sure my relatives cry in my dying day, just thinking they will get rid of all those "junk."
The lathe is no exception, but has added its weight, I do not know precisely but must walk about 20 kg. With my 66 years (and some months), I am unable to get me into the strong man lifting it in arms to carry from one place to another, for example when I need to use the table to cut wood. Anytime I get a contracture at the waist or back, and I am knocked out by two or three days.
So I thought a solution, here goes, in the hope that it will be useful to some of you:

Signing UpStep 1: Un buen aparejo (a good rig)
I had to get a good rig to lift the lathe safely and effortlessly. I thinked to build a screw and pinion set, but I chickened out because of the difficulties of doing something that works reliably. I found out prices of that are used to raise and lower canopies, and finally got one in La Plata (where I'm going every day) in USD 21.70. To my surprise, the apparatus is very complete, with two very solid brackets and several holes for installation in different positions.
I installed with robust screws on roof beams both brackets, and then measured the distance between them.

Thanks for comment.
You are standing under that heavy lathe
that is held in place by a small Worm-Gear !
And I Pray the gear friction keeps it from un-winding
and accidentally coming down on your head :-)

Hello CHE, it does not comes down because to auger, then the friction is always much greater than the force that can be done in the direction of spin. The gadget I bought at Calle 18 almost 35, I paid 80 or 90 pesos. It is of good quality, but after using it I had to download the file to erase some burrs that had the worm, because every half turn gave a little jump.
Thank cpotoso. "Necessity has the face of heresy." If I had a lot of money I don't would take so much trouble, give it all to do.
Thank cpotoso. I squeezed the brain enough time, because it could be done with gears, but there is a danger that you release the handle and come all the way down. The worm will remain braking permanently.
Now I'm thinking of applying same solution to the hanging deposits that I have in the garage, it really would help me a lot. But maybe encourage me to make a reducer of these, it is not easy but neither space technology.
