you are right. my charger i made is capable of 6 A continous. and 12 A peak. even my flip phone charged just fine. this is why when you twist in a lightbulb into that 15-20 Amp socket, it dosen't explode. any usb device by spec will only draw as much amperage as it was designed to handle. (they should be self regulating)
also, if your 5v outlet is above 500-1500 mA, you should also short the data wires so a device knows it's not possiby a pc and must be a dedicated charger. this way your device will draw a higer amperage and therefore charge faster!
