Where do you get your preforms? My source has a limited selection, and I'd to find alternative providers. ( http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/product/test-tubes )
Note that plastics bottles not designed for carbonated beverages are probably not going to stand up to 50psi internal pressure. Soda bottles (and the preforms they come from) should be OK (but note that a 1l soda bottle pressurized to 50psi contains a lot more energy than a preform (~50ml) preform.

I got my preforms from a soda manufacturing plant... we went on a tour and they gave us a few to take home. I am aware that preforms contain much less energy but I actually prefer them since they can easily fit in your pocket :) As for safety issues, 50 psi in a Soda bottle is fine even if you have slightly weakened it with the hole in the bottom. I have tested the preforms in conditions exceeding 400psi here.
