Look up M. C. Escher and his kaleidocycles.

I understand that it's a paper toy and I'm definitely going to make it and have my kids make it. I'm just not sure how to play with it.

A piece of paper with 3 sides is called a flexegon.
horrible you have to make a print out of this never lines up waste of time
5 years ago
how is this a waste of time? it only takes about 10 mins
7 years ago
You don't have to print it, you could just draw one - it's a simple matter to construct a row of equilateral triangles with a ruler and a compass. Failing that, just print one side - creasing all the lines of the printed side will show the triangles on the back.

i think you mean protractor, not compass.
No, I mean compass. Haven't you ever constructed mathematical shapes with a drawing compass?
compasses draw circles. protractors measure angles.
I said constructed, thus:

• Draw a circle with a pair of compasses.
• Do not change the setting of the compass, and mark off steps around the circumference of the circle. You will find that exactly six steps are made.
• Join all six points with ruled lines, you have constructed a regular hexagon.
• Join every other point with ruled lines, you have constructed an equilateral triangle.
If you draw a long straight line, and mark it off into equal lengths, then set your compasses to that length, you can construct a series of identical equilateral triangles along the line. Joining the tops of the triangles makes a strip of triangles, perfect for making flexagons.

If you still don't get it, talk to your mathematics teacher.

It's a Mini-ible!

oh, i thought you meant measuring 3 60 degree angles at equal lengths then connecting them. and by steps, do you mean how many times you turn the compass?
No, you sort of walk it around the circle.

Am I going to have to write an ible for this?
no, i just havent had geometry im only in algebra.
Only? I find algebra harder than trigonometry.
That makes two of us...
*awe strucken*
Even though I know how to do that, you should make an ible on how to construct different geometric shapes with a compass.
Maybe you're right, it's a disappearing skill.

(Project list gets slightly longer)

Wow, a whole instructable in a comment, I am actually amazed! I could be a critic and ask for pics, but i wont, Nice instructable by the way, both of you guys, kiteman, and Golics. :)
somethings screwed up. i keep on getting other peoples comments in my email. this is th 2nd one in 5 minutes.
Did you know kiteman that if it is a enclosed shape that the sum of all of it angles must and will always equal 180
6 years ago
What is the sum of the angles of a square?
sorry i meant a triangle

:-)

i used te second one, worked very well :)
why dont you just take the image on step one and copy and paste!?!?
i got it just rigt, i wouldve printed it but my printer wasnt woking and mines came out just fine and and im only 14, so just because you cant get it right doesent mean others cant do it so dont say thing like that
7 years ago
dude, don't be so negative. Geez, i thought it was cool. Just because you can't cut in a straight line, doesn't meen that the instructable sucks.

very cool :D mine is about the size of a coin...

what are the dimensions?
what if you don't have a protracter?
freakyqwerty5 years ago
whats teh measerments
60 degrees. use a protractor.

yeah well...

SO AM I

no ofence but its easy to draw
