Unicorn Barf

Picture of Unicorn Barf

Ever since I found out that you can buy cereal marshmallows in bulk on the internet, I have been dreaming about making cereal marshmallow marshmallow treats. Similar to rice cereal treats, but with only the best part of any cereal- the cereal marshmallows! They have affectionately become known as "unicorn barf" around these parts, for obvious reasons, but what is a bad day for a unicorn is a delicious day for everyone else! They are super simple to make and look really pretty!

Step 1: Ingredients

Picture of Ingredients

For this recipe I used:

2 cups of marshmallows

2 1/2 cups of cereal marshmallows

1/4 cup butter for the treats, plus extra for greasing everything

You will also need a sharp knife, a sauce pan, a spatula and a baking tray or glass tray.

This recipe made 15 small pieces of unicorn barf but of course you can make more or less depending on how much you want, just keep the ingredients proportional.

Step 2: Melt down your marshmallows

Before you do anything else, butter up everything you are going to use for this recipe. This will keep it from getting as sticky from the melted marshmallows. Butter up your baking sheet or glass tray beforehand. Don't skimp on the butter. Butter your hands if you want to use them for mixing. Trust me, you'll thank me later!

Melt the 1/4 cup of butter in the sauce pan over low heat, and add the two cups of regular marshmallows and stir constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted. I found this goes faster if you chop up your marshmallows before you add them to the butter. Keep stirring until the marshmallows are completely dissolved and combined with the butter and have a smooth consistency.

Step 3: Add cereal marshmallows

This step you have to move fast.

When your plain marshmallows and butter are combined and have a smooth texture, take them off the heat and add your cereal marshmallows. Stir them together quickly with your spatula until the cereal marshmallows are evenly coated, but not too much that the melted marshmallows start to dissolve your cereal marshmallows! It's an art. When the cereal marshmallows are thoroughly coated, spread the mixture onto your buttered baking tray or glass tray in a roughly rectangular shape about an inch thick. It will probably stick together fairly well. The shape doesn't matter too much since you are going to cut it up later, but it's helpful if it has relatively even thickness.

Step 4: Put it in the fridge and wait!

Picture of Put it in the fridge and wait!

This is the hardest part. Put it in the fridge and wait for about 20 minutes. This is the perfect time to wash out the pan before the marshmallow starts to solidify in it. I found that using very hot water is the best way to get the sticky marshmallow goo out of the pan.

Step 5: Cut, serve, and enjoy!

I cut this batch into a rectangle because the cute sides look really pretty with all the different colors of cereal marshmallows. I cut the rectangle into 15 pieces that were about 1.5 inches square. These things are so sweet, that's probably going to be all you want!

Live life like it's your last day on earth.

And yes, a sharp knife helps a lot!

We made it! We must have added the marshmallow goo to soon because about half the cereal mallows were melted, lost the crunch. It was good, super sugery, stick to small sizes.

You could always add a drop or two of PETA member donated blood and then label appropriately to keep all the vegan types from eating them all I guess.

I checked online and they wanted.more than $1 PER OUNCE for the cereal marshmallows. Has anybody tried to melt regular marshmallows, dye them, and cut them up ? If it works, you could also add flavors (a craft store with candy - making supplies would have a huge selection of dyes and flavors).

For things like this, I'd suggest ordering in bulk. The 12 lb bag is 69.95 and then you could have infinite unicorn barf. However, I haven't seen anywhere that sells them cheaper than that.

This is funny....but I have to try it!! Thanks for sharing. Talk about satisfying a sweet tooth!

This will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth!

is it ok if i make a video how to with this recipe for my youtube channel? I am going to change it up a bit and make them vegan :D

Please do try to make this vegan!! However, you won't be able to use cereal marshmellows, as they have gelatin in them.

Sure thing, as long as you give me credit and post a link to this recipe and stuff. I'm honored!
