This Instructable won the First Prize in the Converse Back to School in Style Contest. So thanks to everyone who voted for it! =)
In return I uploaded a trailer, which you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAj6z9PseCM

This Instructable is for everyone who likes freestyle urban sports. And for those who don't want to get rid of their old shoes.

With Grindoes (What a revolutionary and creative name - I know) you feel like Aggressive Inlining without Inliners. It is something like a training for learning how to grind with Inliners. You don't need a long inrun and it's not that bad if you miss the rail. I am pretty sure you learned to walk earlier than you learned to skate.

Actually, there is an Instructable that shows you how to make related shoes, but this one is cheaper and easier, you probably have everything you need at home and the design is less noticeable (No offence, MKohen's Instructable http://www.instructables.com/id/Soap-Shoesmake-your-own/ is really very good ;))

Summing up, Grindoes are shoes which you can grind with.

Step 1: What you need

1.jpg
Along with a weakness for extraordinary sports, you need:

- Shoes that fit: Don't take your favorite ones - They might go bust. I use my old Etnies, because they have a thick base. Normally, big and expensive shoes have thick bases.
- PVC pipe: It should have a diameter of about 4cm (16"). It doesn't have to be longer than 15cm.
- Screws: 8 small screws with a length of about 1.5cm (0.6")
- Tape: I suggest crepe tape, but every other tape is okay, too.

- A saw: It should have a more or less thin saw blade. I will come to that in step 3.
- An electric drill: You need two diameters, a thin (~2mm) and a normal (~6mm) one.
- A file: You need it to smoothen the PVC pipe and the hole in the shoes, before you use the
- Sand paper.
- A screw driver: It should fit onto the screws mentioned above.
- A pen
- Grind wax: Any candle will do.

my nikes have some sorta of grinding thing in the middle but i will look forward to make my own :D
gizmothegorilla says: Jan 16, 2012. 1:56 PM
Will a bended piece of sheet metal work too if i dont have a pipe?
Salamyman says: Oct 25, 2010. 1:45 AM
now... i liked the paper clone ible very much but for ruining a perfectly good pair of shoes, even more Etnies - that`s unforgivable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JacSpark says: Oct 4, 2010. 8:15 PM
These look like a cool creation! i've always wanted to grind like sonic when i played it for gamecube back in the day, but the only worry i have is the PVC pipe piece.....is it really going to be wide enough to fit onto rails?
cephalopoid says: Jul 3, 2010. 3:58 AM
Nice! I've made some myself a three years ago, using the groove in hiking boots, small metal plates with two holes from the hardware store and pointed screws which I just forced into the rubber. It didn't work out too badly. I'll post a slideshow of those one day.
LilPurpleCow says: Jun 13, 2010. 8:52 PM
Cool, but I don't know if I can get a hold of metal I can cut up, would a cutting board like another ible work? And wouldn't glue be a better idea?
kamibox.de (author) in reply to LilPurpleCowJun 14, 2010. 5:32 AM
I think the gluing space would be too rough, so that there is too little contact to hold it safely. I didn't try it though, but if you lose the pipe during the action it could end painfully ;)
LilPurpleCow in reply to kamibox.deJun 14, 2010. 6:12 PM
But don't the screws get in the way? And I have to try this.. Oh woops, haha didn't read it and.. nevermind. So its just a PVC pipe.. And how thick does the sole have to be? And do you just guess on about how much to cut the pipe, like half way, or should it be a certain amount, if you know what i mean?
LilPurpleCow in reply to LilPurpleCowJun 14, 2010. 6:26 PM
Shoot I apparently can't read. Can you just wax the shoes instead of the rail?
kamibox.de (author) in reply to LilPurpleCowJun 15, 2010. 2:34 AM
That works, but then the sliding power decreases on the rail and that makes it difficult to balance (and it looks a bit odd)
artsgottagun says: Dec 11, 2009. 3:23 PM
 would a tree saw work?

kamibox.de (author) in reply to artsgottagunDec 12, 2009. 2:05 AM
If your shoe is flexible enough, it should.
artsgottagun in reply to kamibox.deDec 15, 2009. 4:57 PM
 ok thanks
pocketsnzl says: Dec 3, 2009. 3:16 AM
i used the top of  a large diameter brass pipe (it sounds so much cooler and doesn't wear away so easily)sealed it with silicone and screws. also having the top of the pipe does not resctrict the size of pipe you can grind on as it is a less critical curve (which means its bigger). i hope this influenced all of you
MrRodrigez says: Aug 24, 2009. 8:06 PM
you think it would work out ok if I used Silicone caulk instead of screws? I don't know what material the silicone would bond to..
kamibox.de (author) in reply to MrRodrigezAug 25, 2009. 12:41 PM
I have thought about using silicone, too, but none of my glues could hold PVC, so I thought that silicone also wouldn't hold it. But try if you want ;) You can still use screws to fix it.
MrRodrigez in reply to kamibox.deNov 15, 2009. 1:53 PM
yeah silicone works great, I've been grinding rails now for around a week :D
ilike2make says: Sep 28, 2009. 1:35 AM
When you make the bigger holes over the small holes that is called Countersinking
kamibox.de (author) in reply to ilike2makeOct 2, 2009. 12:20 PM
Thanks , I will edit that.

Yeah I won! :D :D Thanks for voting! :) Okay, I promise to get out during the holidays (in ~2 weeks) and make a new video :)
Minneapolis Z says: Sep 28, 2009. 11:21 AM
Nice Instructable, these look fun. You should upload that video to youtube or another streaming site where people don't have to have to download a file to their hard drive
kamibox.de (author) in reply to Minneapolis ZSep 29, 2009. 4:24 AM
That video is just a preview, I hope I can make a better one within the next time, this would be uploaded on Youtube then.
Lizander says: Sep 14, 2009. 5:58 PM
Hey good job on the idea!! I made my own pair the other night!!! I quickly got the hang of it, because I practise Parkour, so I'm used to presicion jumping, but what I quickly noticed was that all the jumping and landing on my arches was very painful, and wasn't able to run very well in the next few days. maybe the cutting board idea offers more support or protection? I used 3 inch black PVC tubing.
Lettucehead in reply to LizanderSep 26, 2009. 7:41 AM
They have pads you can cut to fit in your shoe, just a suggestion.
kamibox.de (author) in reply to LizanderSep 15, 2009. 5:07 AM
I'm sorry, but I have never experienced such problems. Maybe your sole is too thin or something like that?
Lizander in reply to kamibox.deSep 16, 2009. 4:08 PM
nope, I dont think so at least. I used some old basket ball shoes, so they are very thick soled...
Lizander in reply to LizanderSep 16, 2009. 4:16 PM
I'll make another pair, and see if the problem continues.

Awesome!!
GeekyAdam says: Sep 3, 2009. 9:34 AM
Awesome idea! I used to want Soap shoes so bad when I was younger, but they were indeed much too expensive to justify the cost. I love how simple the design is with the PVC pipe as the grindplate. I think I'm going to try this at home; I have some old Duff shoes I don't use for skating anymore. If the PVC doesn't slide well, I might try MKohen's idea and use a piece of cutting board as the grindplate, it looks like it would grind better on some less-smoother surfaces such as concrete or stone.
covey12 says: Sep 1, 2009. 11:17 AM
nice, theres some kids at my school that do that crazy ninja wall jumping stuff with shoes like this
JerryMopar says: Aug 31, 2009. 5:42 AM
add some heeley wheels to the back, and youd be ready to stunt it out!
black bike says: Aug 29, 2009. 12:11 PM
I bet a coping saw would work well.
dioblo2345 says: Aug 22, 2009. 10:19 PM

nice project can i use converses or adiddas
kamibox.de (author) in reply to XxCreative ProdxXAug 28, 2009. 6:47 AM
I am not sure with Converse shoes, they might be too thin, but Adidas should work. Just take a look how thick the bottom is. It should t least be one finger thick.
shaneomacmcgee says: Aug 25, 2009. 8:06 PM
I wanted to do this a few years ago... there was a company that made these, but they went outta business I'm on a limited budget, I was wondering if some kneepads from Home Depot would hold up to that much sliding, but I doubt it...
SirBrittanicvs says: Aug 24, 2009. 3:16 PM
Pretty creative. I remember having a pair of Soaps way back in middle school. It might be better to use thicker PVC with a wider diameter, that way you'd have more of a grinding surface and it wouldn't get worn down as quick.
Xonah says: Aug 23, 2009. 4:47 PM
You should make a video with you testing it, cuz im not sure if these are really working. Great idea though
kamibox.de (author) in reply to XonahAug 24, 2009. 8:03 AM
I can assure you these do work, I have already grinded a few rails with them ;) I will probably make a video within the next three weeks, butat the moment I don' have time because summer vacations ended today :(
Xonah in reply to kamibox.deAug 24, 2009. 9:56 AM
Aww men too bad for your, I still have 2 weeks. Do these also work on pavements edges?
kamibox.de (author) in reply to XonahAug 24, 2009. 1:11 PM
Never tried it, but it should if you use enough wax.
berky93 says: Aug 23, 2009. 8:26 PM
hmmm. I might have to make a air of these for parkour
apoel says: Aug 23, 2009. 11:37 AM

guy90 says: Aug 22, 2009. 4:40 PM
Great instructable, my drill has packed up recently tho- but rubber and pvc are weak materials, I'll take the soldering iron to it. Have contemplated using bolts, but small screws seem a lot more suttle- just hope it'll hold
MKohen says: Aug 21, 2009. 2:55 PM
Hey! Pretty nice! At first I was mad that someone had copied mah stuff, but then I read the instructable and noticed that yours are somewhat different. (and in a few ways, better). So good job.
kamibox.de (author) in reply to MKohenAug 22, 2009. 2:52 AM
Thanks, I didn't know that there was such an instructable before, I noticed it when I had the shoes already made. Like guitarmonk says, your shoes are better in some cases, it depends on what you want.
4n4ly5t says: Aug 21, 2009. 8:03 PM
don't they make some sort of wire or something that could be used like a saw? Because that would probably be ideal for this, it would make cutting out the sole a lot easier, seeing as the wire is more maneuverable than the flat saw shown in the picture.
kamibox.de (author) in reply to 4n4ly5tAug 22, 2009. 2:48 AM
I have a few wire saws, but they didn't cut the material very good. You can easily cut the curve with a normal saw when you bend the shoe like in the picture.
guitarmonk15 says: Aug 21, 2009. 6:36 AM
you're right, big expensive shoes have thick bottoms, but would you really want to cut up you're $100 shoes? any ways, good 'ible, and i do like the concealment of these a little more than the other instructable, but what i like more about the other one is A. superglue, not screws. slightly less durable, but wont stick out while grinding B. the arc is bigger with the cutting board, which is better for grinding ledges aand curbs. but over all, both 'ibles are very very good.
cdousley in reply to guitarmonk15Aug 21, 2009. 7:26 PM
a two part epoxy would be good
2wentyhertz says: Aug 19, 2009. 9:24 PM
anyone else remember soap shoes? I had a pair back in jr. high.
aplauche in reply to 2wentyhertzAug 21, 2009. 6:25 AM
hell yeah i used to love those things
natethegreat88 says: Aug 21, 2009. 4:04 AM
If possible you should add a bar of magnesium onto the bottom of these to make sparks when you grind.
Wesley666 says: Aug 20, 2009. 9:07 PM
They actually sell these, but they are hard to find. The mass produced ones just have a slightly bent metal plate screwed into the bottom.
HardCoreHacker says: Aug 20, 2009. 5:37 PM
Very original indeed. I have never heard of Grindoes before
jakee117 says: Aug 19, 2009. 8:21 PM
will it work with vans?
kamibox.de (author) in reply to jakee117Aug 20, 2009. 2:56 AM
I never had Vans, but the bottom seems to be thin, but if you don't need them anymore, you can try at least.
Trans_Am says: Aug 18, 2009. 9:48 AM
Back in elementary school (in winter) we used to ice up the park benches and low fences and grind on them with our plain skateshoes. I might just try this on my next pair of worn-out shoes...
JuCo in reply to Trans_AmAug 19, 2009. 1:44 AM
if you tilt the soles of your feet out and ride on the inside of your arches, you can ride most metal rails. we used to do it around school. (there were stairs everywhere)
Bam95 says: Aug 19, 2009. 12:25 AM
wow very cool instructable i m definitely gonna try this
Cohara4 says: Aug 18, 2009. 4:52 PM
Those are the coolest I can't wait to try it on my old Etnies. I know that people have commented this before, but it would really help if you posted a video with you and them in action. Thank You!
canida says: Aug 18, 2009. 11:47 AM
Nice job!
This is screaming for a demo video, though. ;) And it would probably be nice to link MKohen's Instructable too.
kamibox.de (author) in reply to canidaAug 18, 2009. 3:27 PM
Thanks, I will post a video if I make one (Chances aren't bad ;)) I have linked to MKohen's Instructable now, I simply forgot to paste the link :x
