Use Xbox 360 with a directv remote!

This "hack" allows you to use a directv remote with an xbox360, saving you around 25-30 bucks!!! I accidentally did this when I was trying to program my stereo. This is extreamly simple and easy to do. I am the first that I've seen that has done this. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. POST A COMMENT ASKING ME AND I WILL REPLY!!!

Step 1 1

First switch your remote to av1. Point your remote away from your reciever so that when you press a button it won't react. Then press and hold the select and mute buttons untill the light above the av1 switch blinks twice.

ive had my xbox tuned to my universal remote for years this aint no hack sorry to burst ur bubble dude most come with the code even the direct tv remote also on some smart tvs like i got u can control it thru the hdmi cord with the remote that came with the tv much simpler havent seen it for a while tho

I'm curious if a universal remote could be used to control the xbox 360 or is there something special about the directv remote such as having a code that other remotes won't possibly have? Thanks for anyone up to the challenge to try this out and replying.

it's not a hack either, it's a feature of the remote, it's used to find the codes to the device without having to read a manual to manually enter the numbers

For those of you that don't have 30+ minutes. The OP did a poor translation right out of the Direct TV manual, The link was posted below. Page 23.

Here is the quick and easy programming of the xbox 360, no scanning.

1. Turn on the Xbox 360.

2. Move the slide switch under the AV1 (or AV2) icon.

3. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same
time until the green light under AV1 (or AV2) flashes
twice and then release both keys.

4. Using the number keys enter the 5-digit code "21708". If performed
correctly the green light under TV will flash twice.

5. Aim the remote at your Xbox 360 and press the power
key once. The Xbox 360 should turn off.

For those in Canada with Shaw digital cable... The code to set up your xbox 360 is 1708. (At least it is for the DCT700). While your remote is pointed at your XBOX: 1) hit AUX 2) hold SETUP until it blinks twice 3) hit 1708 4) hit POWER I haven't been able to find buttons for A,B,X or Y, but maybe you can make the remote learn them?? I'm not sure, but it WILL work to control DVD playback. Use play, pause, rewind... directional arrows and the settings button (for menu). I'm not sure where the "enter" button is (OK/SELECT doesn't work), but usually the play button will work well enough.

The original XBOX is listed in the remote's manual as having the code 20522. It is quite possible you could save yourself some time by just going to the manual and following the instructions to enter the code.

Well, no dice. I tried this with the DirecTV remote I have and neither the old Xbox code, nor the code search worked. I guess you have a newer version of the DTV remote... :-(

If you notice for the original xbox the remote resemles all of the more common (cheap) remotes that RCA makes. If you follow the set-up on the Directv remote for RCA you will be able to program the remote to control the old xbox. I have not seen the xbox 360 remote so I do not know if it is manufactured by RCA or not. If you can determine the manufacturer just follow the programming step for that manufacturer.

you also need the little thing that goes in the xbox controller port to receive the remote signal if you use an original XBOX

Oh, and I forgot, between 2) and 3), you may need to press power before doing the code. sorry if I hijacked your Instructable, but this Is a better way to program the remote and you left out the All Channels part .

I got it to work with a RC-23 remote 1) go to settings on your xbox 360 and set remote to all channels 2) hold mute and select at the same time till the light blinks twice 3) enter the code: 21708 or what ever works.

yes all you have to do is look up the codes for them in your code book and fallow the programomg instrucions. P.S. IT WORKS ON MOST UNIVERSAL REMOTES AND Xin1 REMOTES. AND MOST ALL CABLE AND SAT SYSTEMS. so this is not new and microsoft made the xbox remote ready just get off your lazy but and look it up lol. also the original xbox works with the same remotes but you still have to buy the dvd playback kit For any remote to work, you'll need to plug the infrared receiver into an open controller port on the Xbox

Hey, thanks for the code... to enter the code do step one and simply enter 21708. Press power to make sure it responds then move switch back to directv and it'll store that code.

Or, you can just hold down your guide button on your nifty wireless controller, and it comes on. And, if you're thinking of using it for DVDs, the regular controller does that too :D. Cool hack though, keep it up.
