Make a PC Gaming Headset to Xbox 360 Adapter

Unless you have these just laying around, and believe me, I know some people who do, you're going to want to purchase the items listed below. As I said in the beginning, as long as you have all the materials listed in step 1, these parts cost less than $20. The {part numbers} are the Radio Shack part numbers if you choose to go there

You'll need:
(1) 1/8" to 3/32" Adapter {PT# 274-373}
(1) 4" Stereo Headphone Cable Y-Adapter {PT# 42-2570}
(1) 2 pk Solder-Type Stereo In-Line 1/8" Phone Jack {PT# 274-274}

And that's it!

 Hey, I have a question. Actually, first I have a statement. Very good tutorial. I really appreciate this. Second: I have headphones with an inline microphone, much like the ones offered for the new iphone. So, it all goes into one jack, much like the adapter you showed here without the actual adaptor. But, when I bought the 3/32 adapter, it didn't work. I could hear people, but they couldn't hear me. Why is this? Even if you don't know, would it be wort it to try this solution. (I already have the Y-Adapter). I mean, I would only loose $4. Let me know. Thanks in advance.

How much different would this be if one wanted to simply convert a mic, not the headphones and the mic, for use with the xbox?

Why exactly do you need those last two heads? Couldn't you simply do this: 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter 3.5mm splitter? I'm looking to do this, but am still trying to get things strait. Also, it would be a godsend if I could find one of these already made, as I don't even have a solderer.

if you're refering to the In-Line phone jack heads, it's because the Y adapter is set up to only split one headphone jack into two headphone jacks, (think, you and your friend both want to listen to the same mp3 player) but if you solder on the new connectors, you can seperate it out so one side is for headphones, one side is for the mic. Plus, this also lets us mimic stereo sound by use of the bridge. The reason for the 1/8 - 3/32 adapter is what changes the part from a 3.5 mm (standard headset size) into a 2.5 mm jack that fits into the xbox controller. It's a lot easier to use that then to try to solder both of the cables from the Y adapter directly into a 2.5 mm jack. (plus, we couldn't find one that was made to do that.

no problem at all. I'm a total tight-wad and i didn't see the point in spending a bunch of money on something that does exactly the same thing that objects I already have do. Special thanks to the Hubby, he's the brains behind it all, I'm just the type-and-pictures girl. :-)

Well good job on the type AND pictures! I wonder if there exists a Y-adapter that is already the right male pin size, thereby eliminating one bulky adapter...I'll have to find out.

Well Id hate to push a commercial product in a howto guide, but steelseries makes a $15 adapter that does this also.

I was looking at your link. It's an interesting product but it doesn't look like it does the same thing. "Connect the SteelSeries Xbox 360™ Headset Connector to your TVs headphone jack and then :set "Voice Output" to "Play Through Speakers".."still, it's good to know that other options are out there.

The design you see here will let your PC headset work exactly like your existing xbox headset, that is to say, you'll hear all chat through the headset and all game effects through the tv speakers. so your experience will be the same, just more comfortable.

Well it does do the same thing, but with the added benefit of playing the tv audio through the headset also. Its mainly aimed at being used on really expensive pc headsets for voice and sound.
Btw, I have a suggestion to improve your adapter. Radioshack sells a 2.5mm replacement plug. Link You could slice off the 3.5mm plug and solder this one in its place. That would remove a lot of strain from the controller jack.

that's actually one of the components we were looking for when we made this pieces, couldn't find in store and, of course, we wanted to play that night, so we opted for what was there. Nice job on that one. One thing we did find there was an extension cord that had a right angle on one side and a long curly wire. I can't seem to find it on the site, but it then lets you plug the right angle into your controller and the other end into the piece we've made here. I like your idea a little better, but I think I'm good with what I've got going for now.
