Use your laptop as an Xbox/Xbox 360 "Wireless Adapter" on Windows XP/Vista, and Mac OSX by walamoonbeam
Featured
xbox-live-marketplace-guide.jpg
I hate how the Xbox 360's wireless adapter costs $100, so I looked online on how to use any adapter as one. I couldn't find an article on that, but found that you can use your laptop as a gateway, but many articles didn't work, the way they said to do it. I looked on Instructables to see if there were any how-to's about it, and there were none, so here is my second Instructable.
Things you need
Laptop
CROSSOVER Ethernet cable (You can't use the one included with the xbox. But chances are that you have one lying around. Most will be labeled saying crossover. Thanks to sk8erek who reminded me to edit this.
Xbox

I Edited this to show how to do it with Vista and Mac, so this will work for all 3. The one done by me is for Windows XP. Step 4 is Windows Vista. Step 5 is Mac OSX, both Leopard and Tiger

P.S.- This is new information. I just edited this on January 3, 2008. If you do this, you won't be able to connect to the internet through your Ethernet port anymore. Only providing internet will be possible. If you want to know how to fix this, scroll down to my comment about it.

EDIT: A fix for the above problem was posted in a comment by timheppner. I have not tried this myself, but he says it will work, so try it out.
"EDIT 2:" A guy named bsblade told me that my instructions on doing this on a mac were wrong, so I updated it according to his instuctable. To see changes, check out step 5

Step 1: Connect Your Ethernet Cable to Your Computer and Xbox

I know this doesn't sound like it should be the first step, but do it anyways. Trust me, It will work out in the end.

If your xbox says it cannot connect to the internet, but it can to the local network, try turning your firewall off, it worked for me...

Thanks for the wonderful share. But as I followed the guide, it doesn't seem to work on my Dell laptop. Errors kept coming up. I couldn’t solve the problem until I tried Virtual Hotspot, a new WiFi sharing app but works quite well. Few comlex settles and quite effective. So…look forware to more fantastic sharing.

when you are in the "network and internet" window of your control panel, there should be a category labeled "network and sharing center." click on that, then to the left there should be an option, "change adapter settings." In there you want to bridge your wireless and local area connections. This should allow you to access xbox live. Did for me at least.

You can use the one that comes with the Xbox 360. I've done it. You can also use this method to connect to Xbox Live via dial-up. ;-) I've done that as well.

To use the existing cable with XP:
1. Click START > SETTINGS > NETWORK SETTINGS.
2. Click SET UP A HOME OR SMALL OFFICE NETWORK.
3. Make sure all necessary adapters and/or cables are attached.
4. Click NEXT twice. If something isn't connected, you'll get a CONNECTIONS screen. You can click IGNORE DISCONNECTED NETWORK HARDWARE for the time being and then click NEXT to continue.
5. Click THIS COMPUTER CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE INTERNET... and click NEXT.
6. Click your INTERNET CONNECTION and click NEXT.
7. Click your PRIVATE CONNECTION and click NEXT.
8. Click NEXT 4 more times. Note, that you may edit pieces before the final click of NEXT, but this comment isn't in response to those details. Also, this part may take a moment to finalize.
9. Once that is finished, REBOOT your system. You MUST do this step or it will not work.
10. Once your system reboots, wait for it to connect to the internet. Make sure your Xbox 360 is connected to your computer BEFORE you turn the system on.
11. If everything went smoothly, you will connect to Xbox Live whenever you load a Xbox Live profile.

A few notes:
1. If you get kicked offline due to internet issues, you have to renew the connection to your PC to connect back to Xbox Live.
2. If your computer enters HIBERNATION and/or SLEEP mode, the connection will sever.
3. If your computer is REBOOTED and/or SHUTDOWN, the connection will sever.
4. Your computer must ALWAYS be online first.
5. If your console won't connect, you must manually set your DNS and IP ADDRESS settings on your WIRED CONNECTION. Do NOT use your DNS ADDRESS for your router, or it will prevent connection to the internet at some point. I typically use 192.168.0.1 for my internet's DNS ADDRESS and 10.0.0.1 for my Xbox 360's DNS ADDRESS. The IP ADDRESS shouldn't have to be modified.
6. Your FIREWALL can either be on or off. It does not matter. This has been tested with WINDOWS FIREWALL, PC TOOLS FIREWALL, and COMMODO FIREWALL.

PS: Not trying to steal your thunder. Just trying to offer some extra tips, as I have done this before.

Following this instructable gave me the following message on the XBox360 when I tried to test the connection to XBox Live:

"Your network does not have a sufficient MTU setting. Xbox LIVE requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364."

I looked it up and found out that I need to open some ports. So after checking the two boxes on the "Sharing" tab of Vista/7, I clicked on the "Settings" button and checked/added the following ports:

Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)

For the ports that list both UDP and TCP, I added the port twice, making sure one was for TCP and one was for UDP (adding UDP to the end of that port name to differentiate between the two). Port 80 was covered under "Web Server (HTTP)" so I didn't have to add that one individually.

After making sure these ports were added and checked, I was able to connect to XBox Live with no problems.

It won't let me connect with the shared network. When I try to bridge connections it says, "To create a Network Bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing."
devilinops says: Mar 19, 2011. 9:33 PM
ctrl click wireless network control click local make sure both are selected then bridge
cbrunschwyler says: Mar 24, 2011. 9:13 AM
Yes, but if I allow network sharing, it will not let me create the bridge if I have the LAN and wireless both selected. My friend figured it out for me- you do not actually have to BRIDGE the connection as long as the 360 thinks your computer is a router and vice versa, so the LAN connection works.

Okay, I had this working before on my desktop that just puked on me, and I remember having trouble getting it set up then, but I did eventually get it.

Now, I am trying to do this on my laptop. I followed all of the steps, but when I turn my xbox on, the wireless signal on my laptop drops and can not connect. My Xbox will test fine for connecting to the network, but since there is no wi-fi signal, it can't connect to the internet.

For the record, I am using XP Home, with everything configured the same as it was on my desktop.

This is an awesome way to get WiFi connection to the old Xbox 360. If this doesn't work for you though, and you're looking for a nice alternative, I've got just the thing for you. Check out this Xbox 360 Internet Connection Kit from Netgear, it acts the same way as a WiFi adapter, giving wireless internet connectivity for your Xbox 360, and it also works for your PS2, PS3, and PC gaming. Check this link out: http://bit.ly/bByST7, for more information about this wonderful product from Netgear.

I am also trying to hook up xbox 360 via an ethernet cable running from my laptop (saw youtube stuff and thread exlaining how to bypass the microsoft wireless dongle by using a laptops wifi). I live in a building supplied with BT openzone wifi, no access to a LAN connection. I do not know anything about the router providing the signal. I get an excellent signal.

I connect up the cable with the xbox switched of, go to network connections via control panel and then switch on the xbox. When I switch on the xbox the LAN says limited or no connection (as per the vids ive seen on youtube). The wireless is connected and it does work loading websites.

When I bridge the connections (LAN and wireless), the wifi connection disconnects. The bridge says connected.

When I test the xbox live connection it fails at the point of trying to find an internet connection. When I disconnect from the bridge, the wifi connection returns automatically.

I've watched loads of videos on youtube they all do as I've explained and they connect, what's up?

Can you help PLEASE?

Any advice is welcome, thank you.
SmallzSDK says: Oct 26, 2010. 6:42 PM
I finally know how it works. This is what you need to do(for a PC)

You need any ethernet cable.
You also need a good wireless connection.

Plug the ethernet cable into your xbox, and the back of your laptop.
Click on start. Then click on the control panel.
From there, (category mode), click on the Network and Internet Connections tab. Then, click on Network Connections.
You should see a Local Area Connection, and Wireless connection 2.
Left click on Wireless Connection 2.
Click on the Advanced Tab.
Check Mark the box that says: Allow other network users to connect through this connection. or something like that.
Turn on xbox and test connection.
Your welcome!

Okay this is gonna be completely out of left field but I promised myself I'd write on a forum if I ever figured out how to get my Xbox Live working, and I did.. a while back. This is an easy solution but if someone would have mentioned this, or if I would've looked in the right places it would've saved me a lot of time.

I have a Linksys Wireless Router with a couple laptops connected.
I ran an ethernet cable from my xbox to my laptop and that was it. I used my wireless connection through my laptop.
My ip for my Live was not registering at all, so seeing as how it was an ip identification problem: In the Control Panel, I made A NETWORK BRIDGE (so simple, I know) between the laptop's Internet Connection and the only Local Area Connection on the laptop. (ctrl left click the two and right click once both are highlighted, then select 'Bridge Connections')
The xbox was then able to read the IP from the laptop once I tried to connect again.
Hope this helps for someone.

Did you realize that I blurred non-essential areas of the pictures to draw attention to the things that are important? If you did realize that, and you're still complaining about the pictures for some other reason, then I'm sorry that you're disappointed. I made this a few years ago, and currently in my life I'm too busy to download a screenshot program again, edit the pictures, and upload them. Also I no longer have Windows XP. Please just learn to deal with what is given. From your comment about how I'm hiding it from "us," I assume you think I'm trying to prevent you from seeing other stuff on my screen. I'm not. I was simply doing it to help people see what to focus on. I didn't blur the other stuff to the point of being unrecognizable, so you should still be able to use it, even when it's blurred.
Good luck.

Neat, I do this all the time with my Ubuntu Laptop, it's quite easy to set up the wired connection as a "shared internet"
Then you just connect wirelessly, and wire up the wireless-less computer/xbox and bam you're good to go.
There was a brief period where the latest Ubuntu did not support my wireless adapter, so I used this for a week until the patch fixed it.
You can also get a switch or hub and extend this to many clients (and skip the cross-over cable).

That's because it won't, in some cases. It may work for some Vista operated laptops but it didn't with me. This instructable is clearly for Windows XP modifications.

If you're having trouble here's what you do.

When you get to the Internet Sharing properties, make sure the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" is UNCHECKED.

Using the run command that's posted will open your Network Connections.

When you open your Network Connections you should have your Wireless Connection and a Local Area Connection. Make sure your Local Area Connection is enabled.

Once you've got it enabled, highlight your Wireless Connection and CTRL+Click your Local Area Connection. Once selected, right click and select Bridge Connections and follow any prompts that appear.

Test your connection on your XBox 360. If it's still having connection issues, you may have to reset your wireless router. Just unplug it, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in.

Your 360 should connect (to both internet and network) after that.

Hope that helps.

Leah Bashin says: Dec 12, 2010. 10:20 PM
Okay, that worked to where I could get the connections bridged, but when I check the status of the networks, it says:

IPv4 connectivity - Internet
IPv6 connectivity - Limited

It says my Local Area Connection is successfully connected to the bridge, but not to the internet, and I can't figure out why. Is there something I have to do to reenable allowing other computers to use my internet connection to connect to the internet, or is there another problem I need to be looking for?

Any feedback would be very much appreciated, considering my dear friend and I are both unable to afford the official Xbox360 Wireless Network Adapter. This problem is bothering us both.
stina_wo says: Dec 30, 2010. 11:03 AM
After what RomulusQ said, waiting a few minutes for the connection to reach its "full potential" would help. If you're still having problems with connecting, you may have to reset your wireless router, depending on what type of router you have.

Some have their own reset buttons on the back and some require you to unplug for 20 seconds.

If you're still having problems, then re-check that you did all the steps correctly, just in case.
RomulusQ says: Dec 29, 2010. 12:11 PM
I hope this may help anyone else. I followed the instructions from stina_wo and it worked BUT it took a minute. I read other comments about being connected to the bridge but no internet. Mine did the same and I waited a few minutes reading and all the sudden it went from local only to full internet. But it did really take about 2 or 3 minutes after the limited connectivity and you can use the cord that came with the xbox.
THANKS STINA_WO the directions were simple and perfect

Sometimes bridge connections won't work properly. See how to use shared connections under vista or windows 7: http://solved-pc-issues.blogspot.com/
jcarlsoniv says: Feb 13, 2010. 1:01 PM
I have looked through most of these comments and solutions and I can still not solve this problem.  When I was home, my brother set my computer to allow the sharing of devices so that I could use my xbox wirelessly.  However, now that I am at school, and I do not have a wireless connection in my dorm, my computer will not connect through the ethernet port to the internet.  My laptop does just fine, but my desktop will not.  I am using Vista, and when I go to the wireless network's status, there is no "Sharing" tab, and thus, no check box to uncheck.  This is really frustrating me and making me hate Vista even more than I already do.  Hopefully I'll have Windows 7 soon.
walamoonbeam (author) says: Aug 19, 2010. 10:40 PM
That was one of the downfalls of my method. You'll find the answer near the very beginning of the comments, but I'll just copy paste it here. Go to "Start". Go to "Connect to". what you do is you go through the setup wizard again and make sure you check the box that say use this computer as a gateway. I had the same problem but it is now fixed

I eventually got my computer working.  Turns out, I had to update the ethernet port driver.  However, in order to do that, I had to lug my entire computer over to the student union (where there is wireless) so I could download the driver.  Took me about 2 hours worth of trouble shooting once I had the wireless internet to actually get it working though.

Anyone with windows 7, this is how you do it.
Right click on the internet connection tab on the bottom right corner and click "open network and sharing center". On the left side of that window, "click change adapter settings". Left click and hold it to highlight "Local area connection", and the wireless connection you are connected to, and let go. Then right click on the selection and press "Bridge connections". Then just connect your xbox to your laptop via ethernet cable, and test your connection through your xbox. Obviously, make sure you're connected on your laptop to the internet.

My problem is this: When I try to bridge the connections between my 360 and my laptop (with Windows 7 Professional), an error message pops up that reads: "To create a Network Bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing." Any hints as to what I'm doing wrong?
walamoonbeam (author) says: Jun 28, 2010. 10:19 AM
did you hold control when selecting the connections? If not, you want to hold control, and then click on the two connections you want to bridge, and then click bridge connections. But I don't support this method, since it makes you unable to use the internet on ur laptop until you delete the bridge. And another issue is that some lan cards or wifi cards don't support bridging, but then again, some cables don't support my method, so it's a tradeoff.

techman2005 says: Mar 23, 2010. 7:06 PM
Crossover cables don't have to say crossover. If you made it , you might identify the cable with a stripe or a multi colored cable. Also on either end ther would be a cable swapped to make it crossover.

For some reason I thought I had done this with regular cable but When I do I find a cannot connect due to mtu error, which I cannot change on my router.

Elevenism says: Jan 22, 2010. 5:12 PM

So, I tried this. And failed. Maybe I didn't have the right kind of ethernet cord, maybe Microsoft just hates me. Either way, I don't want to bother with this--albeit temporary--fix anymore. However, my ethernet port is broken (internally, I assume). Upon plugging the ethernet cable into my port, I get a notification saying that the cable is INDEED connected and that I've got a speed of 100 MB/s. Upon attempting to surf, however, I see that 1.) the internet isn't reading the connection and 2.) I'm angry for trying this temporary solution.

I went around in the network connections deal and bridged the connection between my Wireless Network Connect and my Local Area Connection. Doing this gave me internet: Internet slower than dial-up.

If anyone has any advice for me, I would greatly appreciate it. GREATLY.

Thanks,
Eleven

Ok guys.. basically i have wireless laptop a normal ethernet cable and xbox 360. after reading many blogs including this one i realised i could potentially play xbox live on it using my laptop etc. After literally hours of testing and trying different ways of doing things im left with 2 bad things and never able to actually access xbox live. first time i would go to manage network connections and then my wireless network connection right click properties then sharing. i would then check both boxes allow it to identify and then test xbox live connection. it would be succesful until it reaches xbox live where i am to recieve i message saying test failed.. "your console is connected to the internet but can't connect to xbox live, your router or ISP may be blocking access to xbox live" so now i am to try and bridge the connections.. in order for vista to let me bridge i must go and uncheck the boxes i have just checked in the sharing section. so now i bridge the connection and all seems succesful until i try again to test xbox live. and this time i cant even get onto the internet! I have taken off every firewall. can someone please help me? do i need a crossover cable? or am i just doing things wrong. neither the bridgeing or checking the 'allow other users to connect throught this computers internet connection' seem to work! Refresher for Vista Users!!!!

I just fiddled with this and it WORKS!

1. Plug Crossover from Xbox to Laptop (Make sure Xbox is OFF)
2. Hit Start > Type Run in the Search Bar.
3. Brings up a little window, Type " ncpa.cpl " into that window. Run
4. Brings up Network Connections.
5. Right-Click your Wireless Connection > Properties > Sharing tab
6. Click "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" > OK
7. You probably don't have to, but Repair for giggles.
8. Turn on your Xbox.

Jonpolygon says: Jan 13, 2010. 7:33 AM
There is a far easier way to do this and with a standard networking cable, however you will need a wireless network connection or two network ports on your PC/Laptop.

On Windows Vista:
Simply plug the cable into your xbox 360 and into your laptop or PC.
Go to your control panel > network and sharing center and click manage network connections.
Select your wireless connection and your LAN connection (ctrl + click), right click on any selected and choose the Add to Bridge option.

Your laptop will receive the internet connection and send the connection to the Xbox 360.

XP is the same process, the bridge can be added from the Network Connections area. I do not currently have access to Windows 7 but it is highly likely that the process is the same again.

Try doing it after you unplug everything from your router except for your modem and laptop and then try it. After you do this, you can plug your stuff back in and it should assign the IP addresses correctly. If that doesn't work, try unplugging and plugging in your router and modem.

Open the Internet Sharing properties and make sure the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" is UNCHECKED.

For some reason, the XBox won't connect to the internet if this is enabled. Disable it and everything should be fine.

I have broken the encryption key on the packets and I am now able to receive, send, and modify all in-coming and out-going packets on my xbox 360 connection. I am sure that they will be adding a new encryption key to their packets soon with a patch. Also as a final note, to safely remove the network bridge you must right click on the two connections but not the bridged connect and click on remove from bridge then all that's there is the bridge connection and then simply delete it if you want. Hope that helps.

Now... i had a problem with step two when i hit start there is no window that pops up when u scroll over "connect to". So if anyone might also have a problem with this, here is how i got to the end to be able to click the check mark on "allow other network users to connect...blah and so forth". First click start, then right click on "network" right above "connect to". Then click "properties". Then click on "view status" right above disconnect if you are connected to internet. After this a window will pop up. click on "properties". Another window. At the top click "sharing" and there u go to the window that is featured at the end of step two. Not sure if anyone else reaches this problem. Hope it helps. "Mon"

I had the same problem it turns out.. "You need a minimum of two (ENABLED) network adapters for this to become available. "... If you have two devices installed, 1 wireless, 1 NIC, chances are your NIC is set to "disabled". Right-click the disabled NIC and set it to enabled (in "Network Connections") then look for the "Internet connection sharing" option in your wireless adapter settings. You should see the option there now.

Otherwise if you have xp you can select both wireless and ethernet connections, and right click, and select "bridge connections". then all traffic to the wireless adapter will be forwarded to the ethernet adapter, and vice versa. Just make sure to use a crossover ethernet cable

.

EVERYONE READ THIS!! THIS IS WHY THE MAJORITY OF YOU CAN'T GET THIS TO WORK!

Most likely the Ethernet cable you are using is wrong. You need a CROSSOVER cable, not a PATCH cable. Most cables have it labeled on them what they are.
I was trying to do this with a patch cable, and it wasn't working. I went to radioshack and bought a crossover ethernet cable, and BAM!
No bridging, just the simple instrustions.

1. Just right click on your wireless connection (computer or laptop).
2. Click on Properties.
3 Go to advanced tab or wireless tab (xp or vista) and check "Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection".

That is it!
I tried this on both a Windows XP laptop and a Windows Vista laptop.
Both work flawlessly.

CROSSOVER ETHERNET CABLE!!!
walamoonbeam (author) says: Aug 1, 2009. 12:46 PM
Yeah. Sorry. I forgot to mention that. The included cable will definitely not work.
steaksauce101 says: May 22, 2009. 7:34 PM

technogeek-1995 says: Jul 18, 2009. 11:23 PM
sk8erek says: May 22, 2009. 8:17 PM
I believe I picked it up for $10 at radioshack. Everyone says to bridge the connection. But I used this method on both an XP laptop and Vista laptop. Both worked flawlessly. Good luck!
sunsurfer says: May 22, 2009. 10:17 PM
There was nothing that you did on top of the instructions? Because I followed them, have a crossover cable and still can't connect fully. When I run the test on the 360, it failed the DNS test. Any idea why? I've tried manually putting in the address, but it doesn't work...
sk8erek says: May 23, 2009. 12:44 AM
Just follow my instructions (make sure you didn't do any of the other stuff first, as it won't work): 1. Right click on your wireless connection (computer or laptop). 2. Click on Properties. 3 Go to advanced tab or wireless tab (xp or vista) and check "Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection". Thats all that's needed. Theres a couple of different ways to do this. The way on this page listed above isn't with a crossover cable I believe. Did you make a bridge connection before trying the method I listed? If so, delete the bridge. Put everything back to its default settings. The only thing you need to do is allow the wireless connection to be shared.

I was having the same problem as dallasd 1205 below. No sharing option. I got around it. Try this. I'm using xp. Firstly i followed josie wosie's instructions.(12 posts down) Then i went to 'Network connection', right click 'local area connection' go to properties, stay on 'General' tab. Scroll down to 'Internet Protocol', highlight and click 'properties' button. Now, check the circle'use the following IP address' and enter: IP address: 192.168. 0 . 3 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0 leave the rest , press OK. Your should now have some sort of connection. The last thing is to go to 'network connections', right click 'Wireless Network Connection', click 'properties' go to advanced tab and the 'sharing' check box should appear now. Check both of them and go to your xbox to test the connection. Worked for me.

You should check your TCP/IP settings. My LAN connection had static IP Addresses while my Wireless obtained them automatically. Your LAN IP settings should be the same as you Wireless settings, if wireless is set automatically, check the LAN TCP/IP v4 and v6 settings should be too. It fixed mine.
BigGill says: Jan 11, 2009. 7:38 AM
Hi,
Dont worry if u cant c the sharing tab. it will only b in 1 of the connections (wireless Network or local area) this is normal if u cant c it in 1 or the other.

1) Connect ethernet cable to PC/Laptop and xbox console.
2) Open Network Connections (Start-Run-ncpa.cpl).
**3) Right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
4) Click the Sharing tab and make sure the top box is UNCHECKED!
5) When finished, repeat steps 3 and 4 for Local Area Connection. If there is no Sharing tab, don't worry!!
6) Highlight both Wireless Network Connection and Local Area Connection, right click, and Create Bridge. You should then notice your Wireless Network Connectiondrops down with the new Bridge Connection
7) The most important part now is to right click Local Area Connection and Add To Bridge. You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live.

Windows Vista 64 bit I just set up and it is nothing like what I have seen here. Some info yes, some not. I went into the WIFI connection of my laptop, told it to use ICS, so top box checked, bottom not checked. Bottom box is allowing network to be controlled by the xbox. As soon as you do this, make sure your cable is plugged from xbox to laptop. Make sure it is a crossover cable, normal will not work. This is the very simple way to do it. Nothing hard about it. Have a good day all. Hope it helps you vista peeps.

I am attempting to use this connection method via a Verizon Wireless phone card, through which my laptop dials into for Internet access. I've gone through all the steps, and I'm pretty positive I've done everything as explained, but I still can't connect to Xbox Live. My Network Connections folder has Wireless Network Connection as "Not connected" but has Local Area Connection as "Enabled, Bridged." The "Dial-up" tab lists my Verizon Wireless card as "Connected" but I can't add it to the Network Bridge. Please assist, if anyone has discovered how to connect via a phone card. Thank you.
Zepheyr says: Apr 18, 2009. 8:19 PM
Nevermind, figured it out. I had unchecked the Verizon card's Internet Sharing connectivity. Now it works! Thanks so much guys!

you kinda need to finish what you were talkin about there bud "your IP settings and choose "Manual." 5. Now e&" isnt to helpful
BigGill says: Jan 2, 2009. 1:21 PM
I'm probably a bit late but hopefully i can sort this problem out once and for all!

1) Connect ethernet cable to PC/Laptop and xbox console.
2) Open Network Connections (Start-Run-ncpa.cpl).
3) Right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

I hope this solved the problem and if it has, happy gaming!

BigGill says: Apr 11, 2009. 3:40 AM
Make sure bridge connection is connected properly. You should see the 3 connections in a row (Also make sure xbox is turned off at this stage). You local area connection should read 'Network cable unplugged'. When you turn your xbox on it should then say 'Enabled, Bridged'. Contact me at s_gillen@hotmail.co.uk if you still can't get it fixed ( I will reply as quickly as possible)
shadowbones91 says: Apr 11, 2009. 6:16 PM
what if it still says that the "Local Area Connection network cable unplugged" even after you repeat the steps, turn on and off your xbox when you're suppose to, and just in-case restart your laptop and do it all over again it still doesn't want to? Honestly I got it to work two times but both times it's said that there's an update to be made after the update it doesn't want to work again. Help would be most appreciated.
BigGill says: Apr 13, 2009. 2:11 AM
If it still says unplugged, there might be a problem with the Ethernet cable. Check that it is connected properly and if possible, try it with a different one.

BigGill says: Mar 26, 2009. 12:30 PM
Hi volcom107040

If you cant see the sharing tab in Wireless Network Connection you will see it in Local Area Connection. Check it out and let me know if you get it fixed.

Good luck.

BigGill says: Mar 26, 2009. 12:38 PM
Hi Polished Wood After completing step 6, you should notice that 2 of the connections drop down to form the new Bridge connection. The connection left at the top is the one you must add to Bridge (in my case it was the Local Area Connection. Hope this helps.

I don't know if this is with everybody's ethernet card/motherboard but when i did this, which was what i was doing originally, i could not use my wireless adapter for internet until i disconnected it from the network bridge. so what i had to do to fix this problem is use one of my wireless cards for the internet access on my laptop, while using a wireless usb dongle for my xbox. just a note on making this work
martin515 says: May 10, 2010. 6:46 AM

ok guys I figured out the problem that I was having. I kept getting an error saying that the LAN connection is already using an IP that is needed for sharing. Well I figured the problem was that 192.168.0.1 is used by my router as the default. I changed the router address to 192.168.1.0 and the ranges from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200. This setting should make your router restart and you should be able to get it working just fine..

Before I did this change my internet was working fine, but I couldnt click on share connection because of the error above and I couldnt bridge them either because once I did, I lost internet connection..  So if you are having this problem give it a try.

Go to network connection, right click wireless connection and remove from bridge. Wait a few seconds then add connection back to bridge. (sounds like your running xp. if you are you must do this eveyrtime you tunr pc/laptop off)

Can this in anyway destroy your already wireless internet connection once the bridge is made?
BigGill says: Apr 11, 2009. 3:58 AM
There shouldn't be any problems with the connection after bridge is formed. If you do experience any, go to your network connections, right click wireless connection and remove it from bridge. You can add it back if, and when, you need it.

So I've bridged the connections between my new computer and my Xbox. This thing is difficult to figure out. It says it's connected on my computer, but my Xbox says it can't obtain an IP address from my rooter or modem, and I should try assigning a static IP. So I put in the static IP and subnet mask and now it's telling me I need to change my MAC filtering setting

what.

I spent around 4 hours trying this and changing that, but to no avail. Then I bought 20m of ethernet cable for $40 from my 3rd floor to my basement and it worked WAY faster than wireless! (and cheaper!) Tip: If you don't want to do this, or you don't have a laptop, use a really long ethernet cable (trust me, it works!)

I got Xbox Live working on my Vista Laptop fine, but I can't get it to Media Connect (PC Selected fails). Anyway Here's how I got LIVE to work for vista: 1) Connect to your wireless network. 2) Plug an ethernet cable from computer to 360. 3) Open up Network Connections (Start->Run->ncpa.cpl). 4) Right click your Local Area Connection. 5) Select the Sharing tab. 6) Make sure "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection" box is UNCHECKED. 7) Hit OK. 8) Select both your Local Area Connection and your Wireless Network Connection. 9) Right click either of them and select Bridge Connections (If you get an error saying you must have at least 2 LAN or high speed internet connections that are not being used by internet connection sharing then repeat steps 4-7 with your Wireless Network Connection also, then try step 8 and 9 again). 10) Just to be safe go to your 360, from the dashboard select the system blade. 11) Select network settings, then edit setting. 12) Under the basic settings tab, select the block that says IP Settings, IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. Press A. 13) Choose Automatic and press A again. 14) Now press B, and press Test Xbox LIVE Connection. Hopefully it worked and you can now play Xbox LIVE. PS -> Like I said Media Connection will probably NOT WORK as it doesn't for me. I have vista home but this should work on any other vista os. If this isn't working for you then you might have skipped a step or have some other problem I don't know about.

walamoonbeam (author) says: Feb 25, 2009. 6:12 PM
This would not have done anything to stop your xbox's wireless adapter from not working. The xbox thinks that it is being plugged into a router and thus will act like it is connected to a router. I recommend that you talk to Microsoft, and I hope you find a solution.

That means no sharing or advanced tab. (that is for my wireless connection) I have the ethernet coord plugged into my xbox 360 and for some reason in the properties of that connection the sharing tab exists and i could select to share that connection. How do I get this to work? .... Me and my brother both have xbox set up and this is one of our last chances of getting them both to work on the internet at the same time for morethen 2 minutes.

Your scenario is what this topic is about using your wireless as the connection to xbox live To run the xbox thru your wireless first you must have a wire based ethernet slot Plug xbox into this slot Goto netowrk connections Right click wireless connection and propeties select the share tab and check mark allow other network users to connect thru this computers internet Right click on wired card and properties Select tc/ip ver4 select properties Select manually configure or use these settings radio button Ip address 192.168.0.1 ( assuming router is 192.168.0.1 if not set this to your router settings) subnet 255.255.255.0 no default gateway click ok

okay, i followed these directions to the letter and it didn't work, first i had some ip conflict while sharing the connection, fixed that i got them to bridge but the Xbox can't get onto the internet, found some other tutorial and it said do some command prompt stuff so i did, worked until i try to get online with the xbox then it gives me IP problems again, i tried setting the IP on the xbox manually, it just doesn't work then. any suggestions?

the first step is plug ethernet into computer and xbox, does that mean plug ethernet into deskpot, because my desktop only has one ethernet plug and then i wont get wireless

Go out and buy a $16 network card for the xbox connection if your wireless is using your ethernet card now
walamoonbeam (author) says: Dec 30, 2008. 10:19 AM
well are you trying to get Internet through your desktop or your laptop? if it is the desktop, then yes. you have to plug the Ethernet cable into your desktop. unless you are using one of those weird wireless bridges, which, by the way you can plug into the xbox anyway so this is not needed then, I don't understand why you would not be able to plug your xbox into your computer and have the computer still be wireless. if this is true, and you still want access to the internet through your computer, AND your xbox, you can try getting one of those really cheap routers that only do wired connections (i think it is called a hub in that case). if this is not the case, then i don't really understand what you mean, and you should consider getting a good wifi usb card.

ipconfig /release

wait for it to do it's thing and when it lets you type again type
ipconfig /renew

i have a few problems when i try and do this, first when i go to step 2 i have to chose something out of a box between allow other users things and the one below it. the choices are local area connection or local area connection 2. i chose local area connection. the next problem is in step 3. the local area connection 2 has the X on it but when i click on it all i can do change firewall or open network connections. the one i can click repair on is local area connection but when i try and repair it says "windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following acition could not be completed: Renewing your IP address" so anyone know what to do or how to fix it?

if you are using Ethernet, then you just have to modify some settings. if you are using wireless then it is broken because this will not do anything to your wireless connection except forward it to your Ethernet port. sorry if you are using wireless. i will make an instructable on how to do this. check my user page in about 30 minutes
acniehaus04 says: Apr 4, 2008. 8:56 AM
The above steps DO actually work but they let out one crucial step in bridging connections on Vista. Heres how to do it: 1.You have to go to the ethernet connection that your xbox is connected to your computer through and turn OFF the "Allow others to connect through this computer" or whatever it was. 2. Once you turn it off you can highlight both the wireless and ethernet connections and simply right click and select "bridge the connections". It takes a minute or two but it did bridge my connections after previously getting the same error message about not being able to do it like some of you had gotten. 3. After the "configuring internet bridge" message disappears you will notice that there is a new internet connection icon above the wireless icon which, not surprisingly is a bridge which means it has bridged a new connection with the wireless. You then right-click on your ethernet connection again and select "add to bridge" like I had to on my computer for some reason. The "configuring bridge" window will come up again. After doing those steps my 360 finally connected to xbox live.
walamoonbeam (author) says: Dec 30, 2008. 10:32 AM
yes. but the point of this instructable is to make it so you do not need to have to bridge it, since bridging the connection makes it so you cannot connect to the internet on your computer anymore, unless you have two adapters, both connected to the internet.

i finally was able to bridge the connection, but i didnt need to add the ethernet adapter to the bridge afterwards.... but still, my 360 still fails at the IP address.... i dont understand what i did wrong... i was guessing that it is because my wifi connection is weak... but im not possitive that would prevent the IP address from being found...
walamoonbeam (author) says: Dec 30, 2008. 10:35 AM
bridging is a weird thing. that why i didn't do it in my instructable. It is a method, but i don't like it, since it makes it so you cannot use your internet for anything else, including for just simple surfing

Hello people. i just bought my 360 2 days ago. i downgraded in some respects from a ps3. anyways, i dont quite understand while some of you are having problems connecting to xbox live etc through your laptop. i run windows xp 64bit and 32 bit on the same machine. the easiest way to get your xbox online is to scrap the ethernet cable that comes with the xbox as it is made to go from xbox to xbox or straight to a router or internet port. get a normal ethernet cable and plug it in at both ends(xbox and laptop/pc). all you have to do now is go to your wireless connection wizard and go into the advanced properties and open your internet portal to other users on the network. Voila. it should go straight online. doing it this way saves a lot of painful altering of your wireless configuration which could end in disaster. i know my age says 18 and you are probably thinking i do not know what i am on about but i make 24.75GP per hour doing things like this

This doesn't work on my HP Compaq 6910p laptop, because plugging the Ethernet cable into the RJ-45 jack causes the wifi adapter to automatically disable itself, so it's not possible to have both the wifi adapter and the ethernet jack active simultaneously. Has anyone else run into this and figured out a way around it?
c0d3h4x0r says: Dec 27, 2008. 2:02 AM
I found the solution. I had to go into my laptop's BIOS and disable the setting called "LAN/WLAN Switching". Now I can use both the wireless and wired network adapters simultaneously. I'm running Vista, and all I had to do was make sure Internet Connection Sharing was turned OFF on both adapters and then bridge them... works great!

Ok, for all of you who failed ip adress when test connecting after taking the exact steps that this site said to do here is how to connect to xbox live through your wireless laptop. Or if you just want to anyway. Ive figured out how to do it (for vista): Forget about all that crap about brigding a connection and if u have already bridged your internet just go back and delete it by right clicking on network bridge and delete. If you cant remember how to get there its start/run/ncpa.cpl dont click off this window once you have deleted the bridge that you might have made. After you have got rid of the network brigde or if its not there doesnt matter, plug in your ethernet cable from your laptop to your xbox. Then right click on wireless netowrk connection and click properties. then click on the sharing tab and DO check the box that says 'allow other network users to connect through this computers network connection.' The box underneath should automatically check too. Trust me, dont listen to this site that says not to check that box. That box is the very thing that allows you to connect and if you actually think about it, it makes sense anyway. Of course you want to allow other network users(your xbox) to connect through your network connection(your laptop or computer)because thats what you are trying to do! Once you have checked the box click ok then try signing into xbox live and it will work. i told some friends and it worked fine for them on their vista laptops. I dont see any reason why it wont work on a vista desktop too. If you have xp click on advanced beaucse there will not be a sharing tab. While i was signed in on xbox live through my laptop, i signed in onto msn on my laptop and it signed me out of xbox live. If this happens to you too just go back to ncpa.cpl and uncheck the box then check it again or disconnect to your interent then reconnect and it should be fine. You probaly wont even be going on msn while playing on xbox live anyway and it was probaly some random error i dunno but it only happend once, just warning you. I can surf the web fine on my laptop while connected to xbox live through my laptop.

Is this what you had? i double clicked the network connection icon nd the settings were as follows: IPv4 Connectivity: Internet IPv6 Connectivity: Limited Media State: Connected and had duration and speed did u have the same?

This is basic Internet connection sharing. My Media PC is wireless and it sits on my rack right above my receiver and my XBOX. I share that connection as if I would with another PC. Works like a charm. I also did the same thing when with my PS2 slim. I have very strong router so its just as if I have a cable plugged into it. Even though these instructions are very general, you may have to do some tweaking depending on your setup, but it will work.

I use my laptop to share an internet connection, and there is a way to do it so that you still have an internet connection on the laptop as well. This is with XP, but I believe that it works with other windows OSs as well. In the network properties, highlight the wireless connection, and the ethernet connection, and select "bridge connections". You connect to your wireless connection normally, and your two connections are bridged. You can then connect to the ethernet adapter, or connect a hub or switch to the ethernet adapter, thus being able to share the internet connection with multiple devices.
Nymphatic says: Nov 24, 2008. 11:46 PM
Will this work with a desktop, also? Please let me know an answer to this as soon as possible. I'm really eager to get this thing up and running.

Certainly. Windows works the same on a desktop as it does on a laptop. The only difference is that a laptop is more portable than a desktop is.

In XP what happens if you do this entire instructable without problems but end up with a DNS error?

I went to http://192.168.0.1 for my D-Link router and logged in.
On most routers it is:
Username: admin
Password: (no password)

Once logged in, I found where my DNS server IPs were listed. On the left side-bar, Wizard was highlighted. On the top bar, I clicked Status. Under WAN I found my DNS IPs. Finally, I manually inputted these into my 360 (rather than have it find them automatically) and tested the connection again. At this point it should have been working, but I am still getting the DNS fail error on the 360.

Any ideas anyone?

theothercan says: Jan 3, 2008. 6:03 PM
Okay, what you are talking about is the most basic internet connection sharing, but if it works it works I guess. One thing that you should keep in mind is that in windows XP the NIC on the LAN side automatically gets a static address of 192.168.... so in order to be able to use this RJ-45 jack later on down the road in another subnet you would have to go in and change the IP to dynamic, or the alternative static IP address. All things said I think it would be MUCH better to just use a $5 dummie hub because then you could jack in other systems and be ready to go for multi-box online, or a $20 smart switch to branch your connection without static IP's. Any questions? I'll try to help with whatever you need.

Hubs are bad. They don't isolate collisions in the same matter as switches. I was thinking it would be easier to use ICS (internet connection sharing). Evidently your using it, just differently. Finally wireless ethernet has more overhead in it's packets. That means it is slower than a wired connection. If your trying to do this for Live, I would recomend putting in an additional NIC and just using ethernet cable. Also I believe ICS uses a stricter type of NAT. Thus it will likely give you issues whilst playing online.

I tried the basic instructions as written and it was not working. For some reason the automatic setting on the XBOX 360 was not configuring correctly. After 2 days though i was able to get it to work. Here is what i did. 1) Restart both laptop and XBOX 360 with lan cable plugged in each other. 2) in Vista Go to Network and sharing center > manage network connections 3) Highlight bith 3) bridge your wireless connection with the lan connection by high lighting (selecting) both of them then right click and click Bridge Connections. This will take a minute or two to complete. 4) at this point you should see a new connection called network bridge. Right click this select STATUS. Then click details. 5) on XBOX 360 manual configure your network setting for IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway address that are displayed from the details of your network bridge. 6) IMPORTANT NOTE: The IP address of your XBOX MUST be different the setting of the network bridge or it wont work. 7) Test connection on your XBOX 360. I hope this is helpful to anyone

As a quick explanation, this procedure will work for anything that uses a wired ethernet connection. This is also the reason why the old XBOX (original) wireless adapter works. All of the bridging and sharing is done in Windows, and what is sent to the XBOX is standard ethernet packets. The XBOX doesn't even know that anything is different about your setup. The only thing I can think of for the people who are unable to update their boxes is that the laptop (or PC, whatever you're using) is blocking those ports on the Internet Connection Sharing setup. There's got to be a way to unblock ports, but off the top of my head, I can't think of what it would be.

Copy the following into notepad and save it to a file called "OPENUP.BAT" (of type "all files"):

@ECHO OFF
@ECHO Configuring firewall to allow XBOX LIVE traffic.
@ECHO Please wait.

REM To allow Windows traffic:
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = TCP port = 139 name="TCP_139" mode = ENABLE profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = TCP port = 445 name="TCP_445" mode = ENABLE profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = UDP port = 137 name="UDP_137" mode = ENABLE profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = UDP port = 138 name="UDP_138" mode = ENABLE profile = all > nul

REM to open TCP and UDP ports 5500, 5800 and 5900 for UltraVNC:
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = TCP port = 5500 name = "UltraVNC TCP5500" profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = UDP port = 5500 name = "UltraVNC UDP5500" profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = TCP port = 5800 name = "UltraVNC TCP5800" profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = UDP port = 5800 name = "UltraVNC UDP5800" profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = TCP port = 5900 name = "UltraVNC TCP5900" profile = all > nul
netsh firewall add portopening protocol = UDP port = 5900 name = "UltraVNC UDP5900" profile = all > nul

REM Allow PING responses
netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable > nul
netsh firewall set opmode mode = DISABLE > nul

@ECHO Completed!

Save it, then run the file as an administrator. Note that I don't know what ports are required for XBOX LIVE specifically, but the method should be obvious from the above.

That seems to be my issue. I use Windows XP SP3 and Windows Firewall. This website's solution has worked for me so far only when I turn off firewall completely. This article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874) describes which ports to open for Xbox Live, so I added them to my Firewall exceptions list. (FYI, they are:

TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53

I added these exceptions, but the 360 will not connect. Any suggestions?

I think I may have found the solution for everyone that is getting randomly disconnected. I was having this same problem until I did one thing. I changed the channel on the router to channel 11 instead of the default, which is 6. Channel 6 can get interference with things such as cordless phones and microwaves. This interference won't shut down your internet, but it can however make it hiccup. Resulting in the random disconnects.

An even nicer solution is to buy an inexpensive wireless router and use it as a bridge. Sure, $50 is more than $0, but it's also less than $100. I use a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT installed and it works like a charm.
supernull says: Jan 3, 2008. 9:19 PM
Nice by the time i got a linksys router they had already reduced the amount of memory that was on my WRT54GS and my other one the WRT54GX had some weird wireless chipset that was not opensource
taliesin1077 says: Jun 13, 2008. 2:31 PM
I don't know if you'll read this, but Linksys has released the WRT54GL, which increased the internal memory of the unit for the express purpose of installing 3rd party firmware. It's usually about $10 more expensive than a standard router, but the upside is that it actually works for 3rd party firmware. That was going to have to be my method before finding these instructions. $100 for a network adapter is LAME, M$...LAME.

theres a way simpler way to do this for vista. i never have any problems finding the ip address, but if you do just restart your computer. 1) Open Control Panel and double click Network and Sharing Center. 2)On the left under TASKS, click Manage Wireless Networks. 3) Once that window opens, about 1/3 of the way down you will see Adapter Properties. Click that. 4)A new window will come up. Click the Sharing tab at the top. 5)Check the box that says Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection. Click ok and you are done! Connect your cat 5 (ethernet) cable from your laptop to your 360 and your set. Hope this helps someone

ekeeper00 says: Mar 11, 2008. 3:13 PM
Ok for Ya'll Vista users. What you need to do is to create a network bridge between your wireless network adapter and LAN adapter. To do this get to your manage connections page and there you can highlight wireless and LAN then right click and bridge connections. Thats about it vista is smart enough to run a DNS on the bridge so it automatically sends out IP addresses. the bridge should be automated, but make sure your NAT is open for LIVE. If it is not check out your router settings and voala beat the stupid over-priced system.
codered89 says: Apr 3, 2008. 4:39 PM

if you want it to work do the following, go to your wireless network connections on your computer, right click which ever your using, click on properties, then click Sharing on the top tab, and put a check mark in the first box where it says. ( Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection). This will let you use your laptop as a replacement wireless network adaptor for your 360, with a MODERATE connection. If you would like a better faster connection just put a check mark on the other box where it says (Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection). This will give you a OPEN connection. Enjoy ; )

Jaiden says: Jan 25, 2008. 6:33 AM
this is what I do when I want to go on live from the family room (there is no internet connection there). All it is doing is making a bridge between the wireless and ethernet. Ever since I've done it, it hasn't effected connecting to the internet through ethernet, but I do have switch off wireless to do so (i think thats normal anyway, wireless overpowers ethernet :P).
dichromatic says: Feb 3, 2008. 4:17 AM
Actually wireless is inferior to wired network connections. Much less room in the payload section of the wireless packets. Not to mention wireless sends constant "Check in" signals to maintain the connection.
Jaiden says: Feb 4, 2008. 10:54 PM
Yeah I'm not saying it isn't. I was just mentioning this is just bridging the connection so that the ethernet can share it with the wireless. That is what this instructable is doing, right?
dichromatic says: Feb 3, 2008. 4:32 AM
Dude you left out the whole properly configuring it part. There are a few steps and services associated with ICS that you did not mention. ICS is more than just bridging. It enables a DHCP server on the LAN adapter. This will automatically give the 360 an IP address. The PC will then use a modified version of NAT to translate the LAN IP to your WAN(wireless) connection, thus enabling the 360 to go online. Bridging occurs on layer 2. It uses mac address not IP addresses.
gamer4maker says: Jan 19, 2008. 5:52 PM
I too are having that problem. I've tried changing my IP address, but it doesn't work. If I find a solution I will post it...
dichromatic says: Feb 3, 2008. 4:21 AM
The address needs to be in the same subnet as the gateway device(laptop on the wireless interface). If ICS is enabled you need to set up your 360 to use DHCP. Don't manualy set up the address. Check "Obtain automaticly" on the 360 network settings for IP address. The network diagnostic test built into the 360 can help you troubleshoot.
dichromatic says: Feb 3, 2008. 4:13 AM
If you are getting DHCP errors you need to have a DHCP server. If your connecting through a laptop the laptop must give the IP ala DHCP server. Windows Internet connection sharing sets it up automaticly. The setup your trying to achieve has a stricter NAT type than just using a wired/wireless connection. The NAT type needs to be OPEN. If not you will have trouble hosting and finding games. You can check it in the network settings. Run the "connect to xbox live" diagnostic tests. They will let you know where your problem is. If you are seeing another devices HDD it could be a few things: 1. Device has media sharing through Zune software 2.Device has media sharing through Windows Media player or windows media center. That type of connection means your 360 is communicating with your device. If using Windows use Internet Connection Sharing. It sets up the NAT and associated DHCP service.

When i click on Internet connection sharing to check the top box, I check the box then click ok and i get the following error: Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is allready configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing. Any help anyone??

iv been asked this too much on how to fix ur ethernet after using it as an adapter, so here it is Make sure you do the last 3 steps in the EXACT order they are in Go to "Start" Go to "Connect to" Go to "show all connections" Right click "Local Area Connection," or whatever icon is your Ethernet port Click "properties" In the box "This connection uses the following items", scroll down to the bottom and click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"] Click "Properties" Click "Obtain an IP address automatically Click "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" Click "OK" Then unplug your Ethernet cable, and replug it in. If it still doesn't work, right click your Ethernet connection icon in your task bar, and click repair. If u wana use it a gateway for the xbox again, you will have to disable sharing, and reenable it

Hey, great article, I'm glad someone finally documented this! My only problem is that my college network blocks all ports except for 80 and 443. I already use a SSH tunnel to get my telnet through and check e-mail, but I'm not sure how to run my Xbox Live through it. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources for breaking through a firewall like this one?

wow guys i joined this website today for this post.. first of all walamoonbeam congratulations this instructable was amazing and who ever helped you to make it better thank you. this was perfect and so easy anyone could figure it out.. mine worked perfectly after the first try the only thing i do have to add to this is the "allow other networks to connect through this step" is people will not know to go to the "network and sharing center" and in the box of the network they are connected to click on the "view status" button and then "properties" at the bottom left hand corner. once your in there you go to sharing and then you can finish step 2. also i did not need to disable my firewall i connected straight through.. i just had to run the xbox live network connection wizard again on my xbox to connect. thank you so much walamoonbeam this was amazing!!!!!!!!! oh yeah also i was wondering does anyone think this process will allow people who are connected to a network that blocks high bandwidth? when i'm at college i am unable to play live because the network does not let the "MTU" or the "ICMP" to connect.. its one of those two but i'm not sure.. can anyone answer this please???
andaman says: Jan 3, 2008. 4:36 PM
i went to "connect to" and then the Wireless Network Connection. But, in the advanced tab there is no"sharing" options just the firewall options. Please help. Thanks.
walamoonbeam (author) says: Jan 3, 2008. 5:09 PM
Is your ethernet adapter enabled? thats the only reason i can think of, that explains why this is happening

Hey, I just want to lend a helpful hint.
To be honest, I suggest you make a new instructable that fixes the more basic/complex problems that people [such as myself] have faced.
For example:
[PC]
Configuring IP Ads. for the '360.
- also making/using compatible ones
Explain what a 'cross over cable' is' and how it can be utilized
- some people don't know what it is.
Explain a bit more 'in depth' of how to make your internet work with it.
- for example, show and tell [haha] how to 'Bridge Connections'

Other than that, it's a brilliant Instructable.
Although, I'm still having some problems that I can't solve, no matter what I do... Ahh well, I'll ask later.
bombos says: Jan 5, 2008. 7:54 PM
I haven't read the instructable, but from reading through this post i can't really see why anyone would need to do this. A router or hub or switch, it is so convenient!

so how exactly do you go in and configure your ip to be compatible with the one to your xbox

wouldnt you need a crossover ethernet cable? nice instructable, though, i dont have a x box, so i dont need it, but could be useful when i decide to get a ps2. would it work on a ps2? -gamer
FreshPineSent says: Jan 4, 2008. 11:43 PM
The box does the crossover process automatically. A straight through cable should work fine.
supernull says: Jan 3, 2008. 9:02 PM
Thats exactly what I was going to say you really should have to use a crossover cable not a normal straight through If you want to uses straight through get a switch/hub if they are able to connect it using just a straight through its only because one of the devices has auto switching.
walamoonbeam (author) says: Jan 4, 2008. 9:16 AM
what's a crossover cable
instructing tables says: Jan 5, 2008. 7:40 PM
hey so how do you change it back to original settings?
supernull says: Jan 4, 2008. 11:01 PM
It's a type of IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) cable where one end has some wires crossed-over. One end would be a 568A and the other would be a 568B. The reason you need them is because when you have a switch or a hub it switches them for you thats why you need a crossover cable when you don't have a hub or switch. The rule is you only need a crossover when connecting like devices such as a switch to a switch or a computer to a computer some of the modern Cisco switches have auto sensing when the when the wrong cable is used and they can auto correct. So if you say this really works its probably because the xbox360 has link play where you can connect another xbox360 just using a cable no hub or switch they probably put in auto sensing so you wouldn't have to use a cross over cable because straight through cables are the most common. Hope this helps sorry if I made you more confused.
taliesin1077 says: Jun 13, 2008. 2:28 PM
When I saw these instructions, I was stoked, since I have a homebuilt DVR box in my entertainment center with an unused network port. This is gonna rock! However, I also thought a crossover would be required. I'm also pretty thrilled that the XBOX is designed to be hooked to another XBOX, so they built in the crossover support to the 360. Excellent job! Doing it as soon as I get home from work!
gamer says: Jan 4, 2008. 10:57 AM
its a ethernet cable that has the output of one device directly into the input of the other, most people use them to make a two computer network without a router, hub, or switch. a little googling would have answered that but... i guess its not obvious to reasearch before asking, anyways, i hope i answered the question. -gamer

I am doing this too, but it is a lot more complicated on my Mac. You have to change more settings - on the Xbox 360 too! So basically, I don't think this instructable works for Macs. If you need to use a Mac, try googling it.
gerty says: Jan 4, 2008. 12:04 PM
do you have to use a crossover cable or can you use a straight through?
GorillazMiko says: Jan 3, 2008. 7:52 PM
Just checking, so I plug in the Ethernet cable to my laptop or computer with wireless Internet, and do all of this, right? And if I do this, then my computer will never be able to use Internet again?
capt. untsahts says: Jan 3, 2008. 9:22 PM
no its only when the other device is using the internet that the main pc can't if u do it this way. bridge it like timheppner said and both will work anytime
GorillazMiko says: Jan 3, 2008. 9:43 PM
I don't get it... so basically, I plug in an Ethernet cable from the Xbox 360 to the laptop or computer wireless Internet, then I go to start, connect, allow users to connect through Internet or whatever, right?
capt. untsahts says: Jan 4, 2008. 9:37 AM
no, connect both w/ethernet, then to get both to get internet at the same time, go to start>connect to>show all connections, and select both the wireless and the ethernet connections at the same time, right click, and select "bridge connections"

I'm on a macbook right now, and seriously considering trying this out. Internet sharing is easy enough in OS X. I don't know if Xbox Live will work. I'll give it a shot and let you know.

I am using XP and I cannot repair the ethernet connection. It just says that a network cable is unplugged, and when I right click it, my options are "change fire wall settings" or "open network connections" and even in network connections I cannot repair my ethernet.
banjos75 says: Jan 3, 2008. 7:46 PM
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC USERS: 1. CLICK ON SYSTEM PREFERENCES (light switch with apple logo on Tiger, box with gears on Leopard. On Apple menu in both). 2. CLICK ON SHARING (Blue file with yellow diamond on Leopard, ?? on Tiger). 3. CLICK THE BOX NEXT TO INTERNET SHARING (2nd from the bottom of the list on the left of the window in Leopard, ?? in Tiger). 4. SELECT THE OPTIONS FOR SHARING FROM AIRPORT TO ETHERNET (right of the window). 5. DONE.

I got an xbox this year but I didn't want to buy an adapter so i did this, sort of. It is a little different to do this on vista so I think that you should put that in here. Basically all you have to do different is type "ncpa.cpl" in Run.
lazydude2000 says: Jan 3, 2008. 2:18 PM
Any idea how to do this if you have Mac laptop?
GorillazMiko says: Jan 3, 2008. 11:05 AM
Oh my god. Thank you so much for showing. My friend has an Xbox 360 that he always brings over, but when we play live we always have to use the tiny television. Thanks for showing, now we can play on the High Definition television!!!!!
