CROSSOVER Ethernet cable (You can't use the one included with the xbox. But chances are that you have one lying around. Most will be labeled saying crossover. Thanks to sk8erek who reminded me to edit this.
Xbox
I Edited this to show how to do it with Vista and Mac, so this will work for all 3. The one done by me is for Windows XP. Step 4 is Windows Vista. Step 5 is Mac OSX, both Leopard and Tiger
P.S.- This is new information. I just edited this on January 3, 2008. If you do this, you won't be able to connect to the internet through your Ethernet port anymore. Only providing internet will be possible. If you want to know how to fix this, scroll down to my comment about it.
EDIT: A fix for the above problem was posted in a comment by timheppner. I have not tried this myself, but he says it will work, so try it out.
"EDIT 2:" A guy named bsblade told me that my instructions on doing this on a mac were wrong, so I updated it according to his instuctable. To see changes, check out step 5

I am running Vista
To use the existing cable with XP:
1. Click START > SETTINGS > NETWORK SETTINGS.
2. Click SET UP A HOME OR SMALL OFFICE NETWORK.
3. Make sure all necessary adapters and/or cables are attached.
4. Click NEXT twice. If something isn't connected, you'll get a CONNECTIONS screen. You can click IGNORE DISCONNECTED NETWORK HARDWARE for the time being and then click NEXT to continue.
5. Click THIS COMPUTER CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE INTERNET... and click NEXT.
6. Click your INTERNET CONNECTION and click NEXT.
7. Click your PRIVATE CONNECTION and click NEXT.
8. Click NEXT 4 more times. Note, that you may edit pieces before the final click of NEXT, but this comment isn't in response to those details. Also, this part may take a moment to finalize.
9. Once that is finished, REBOOT your system. You MUST do this step or it will not work.
10. Once your system reboots, wait for it to connect to the internet. Make sure your Xbox 360 is connected to your computer BEFORE you turn the system on.
11. If everything went smoothly, you will connect to Xbox Live whenever you load a Xbox Live profile.
A few notes:
1. If you get kicked offline due to internet issues, you have to renew the connection to your PC to connect back to Xbox Live.
2. If your computer enters HIBERNATION and/or SLEEP mode, the connection will sever.
3. If your computer is REBOOTED and/or SHUTDOWN, the connection will sever.
4. Your computer must ALWAYS be online first.
5. If your console won't connect, you must manually set your DNS and IP ADDRESS settings on your WIRED CONNECTION. Do NOT use your DNS ADDRESS for your router, or it will prevent connection to the internet at some point. I typically use 192.168.0.1 for my internet's DNS ADDRESS and 10.0.0.1 for my Xbox 360's DNS ADDRESS. The IP ADDRESS shouldn't have to be modified.
6. Your FIREWALL can either be on or off. It does not matter. This has been tested with WINDOWS FIREWALL, PC TOOLS FIREWALL, and COMMODO FIREWALL.
PS: Not trying to steal your thunder. Just trying to offer some extra tips, as I have done this before.
Thanksss!!!
go to start and type in "view network connections" click on it
After that you should have local area connection and wireless network connection
Highlight them both and right click one of them and there will be something called bridge connections click on it "make sure everything is enabled in network connections"
and then try the network setup on both ps3/xbox :DDDDDD
"Your network does not have a sufficient MTU setting. Xbox LIVE requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364."
I looked it up and found out that I need to open some ports. So after checking the two boxes on the "Sharing" tab of Vista/7, I clicked on the "Settings" button and checked/added the following ports:
Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)
For the ports that list both UDP and TCP, I added the port twice, making sure one was for TCP and one was for UDP (adding UDP to the end of that port name to differentiate between the two). Port 80 was covered under "Web Server (HTTP)" so I didn't have to add that one individually.
After making sure these ports were added and checked, I was able to connect to XBox Live with no problems.
Um where it says above the 2 edits, about fixing the internet from not being able to use it anymore, which then goes onto say see walmoonbeems comment about it; could someone leave me a link or page number or inbox me please.
Greatly appreciated.
"windows could not finish repaiting the problem because the following action cannot be completed:

so if anyone can please help
Internet connection sharing cannot be enabled
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP adressing
I'm running an ad-hoc connection and using another laptop instead of a router right now. Do you have any suggestions for me?
Now, I am trying to do this on my laptop. I followed all of the steps, but when I turn my xbox on, the wireless signal on my laptop drops and can not connect. My Xbox will test fine for connecting to the network, but since there is no wi-fi signal, it can't connect to the internet.
For the record, I am using XP Home, with everything configured the same as it was on my desktop.
thanks
Cant obtain ip from modem/router.
Help?
I connect up the cable with the xbox switched of, go to network connections via control panel and then switch on the xbox. When I switch on the xbox the LAN says limited or no connection (as per the vids ive seen on youtube). The wireless is connected and it does work loading websites.
When I bridge the connections (LAN and wireless), the wifi connection disconnects. The bridge says connected.
When I test the xbox live connection it fails at the point of trying to find an internet connection. When I disconnect from the bridge, the wifi connection returns automatically.
I've watched loads of videos on youtube they all do as I've explained and they connect, what's up?
Can you help PLEASE?
Any advice is welcome, thank you.
You need any ethernet cable.
You also need a good wireless connection.
Plug the ethernet cable into your xbox, and the back of your laptop.
Click on start. Then click on the control panel.
From there, (category mode), click on the Network and Internet Connections tab. Then, click on Network Connections.
You should see a Local Area Connection, and Wireless connection 2.
Left click on Wireless Connection 2.
Click on the Advanced Tab.
Check Mark the box that says: Allow other network users to connect through this connection. or something like that.
Turn on xbox and test connection.
Your welcome!
I have a Linksys Wireless Router with a couple laptops connected.
I ran an ethernet cable from my xbox to my laptop and that was it. I used my wireless connection through my laptop.
My ip for my Live was not registering at all, so seeing as how it was an ip identification problem: In the Control Panel, I made A NETWORK BRIDGE (so simple, I know) between the laptop's Internet Connection and the only Local Area Connection on the laptop. (ctrl left click the two and right click once both are highlighted, then select 'Bridge Connections')
The xbox was then able to read the IP from the laptop once I tried to connect again.
Hope this helps for someone.
Windows 7 Premium
Good luck.
Then you just connect wirelessly, and wire up the wireless-less computer/xbox and bam you're good to go.
There was a brief period where the latest Ubuntu did not support my wireless adapter, so I used this for a week until the patch fixed it.
You can also get a switch or hub and extend this to many clients (and skip the cross-over cable).
too bleh, i just went and bought a usb dongle for like 7 bucks off ebay and then created a ad hoc network with my moms win7 pc
If you're having trouble here's what you do.
When you get to the Internet Sharing properties, make sure the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" is UNCHECKED.
Using the run command that's posted will open your Network Connections.
When you open your Network Connections you should have your Wireless Connection and a Local Area Connection. Make sure your Local Area Connection is enabled.
Once you've got it enabled, highlight your Wireless Connection and CTRL+Click your Local Area Connection. Once selected, right click and select Bridge Connections and follow any prompts that appear.
Test your connection on your XBox 360. If it's still having connection issues, you may have to reset your wireless router. Just unplug it, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in.
Your 360 should connect (to both internet and network) after that.
Hope that helps.
IPv4 connectivity - Internet
IPv6 connectivity - Limited
It says my Local Area Connection is successfully connected to the bridge, but not to the internet, and I can't figure out why. Is there something I have to do to reenable allowing other computers to use my internet connection to connect to the internet, or is there another problem I need to be looking for?
Any feedback would be very much appreciated, considering my dear friend and I are both unable to afford the official Xbox360 Wireless Network Adapter. This problem is bothering us both.
Some have their own reset buttons on the back and some require you to unplug for 20 seconds.
If you're still having problems, then re-check that you did all the steps correctly, just in case.
THANKS STINA_WO the directions were simple and perfect
i did what you said, it bridged the connections and my internet is on but my computer is saying that there is a ip adress conflict, i test the xbox connection and it doesnt work... any clue?
And thanks!
Right click on the internet connection tab on the bottom right corner and click "open network and sharing center". On the left side of that window, "click change adapter settings". Left click and hold it to highlight "Local area connection", and the wireless connection you are connected to, and let go. Then right click on the selection and press "Bridge connections". Then just connect your xbox to your laptop via ethernet cable, and test your connection through your xbox. Obviously, make sure you're connected on your laptop to the internet.

If so, where can i purchase one?
For some reason I thought I had done this with regular cable but When I do I find a cannot connect due to mtu error, which I cannot change on my router.
I currently live on a marina where we have w-fi, i've been trying to connect my laptop to my xbox using an ethernet cable.... i can see my laptop and i can get pictures and music of it through my xbox, but i just can't connect to the internet, this way. I get a message saying failed connection. although i can still get web pages on my laptop.
Is there anybody that give me some help on this problem and what to look for etc.
I've tried bridging the connection but still no go........
So, I tried this. And failed. Maybe I didn't have the right kind of ethernet cord, maybe Microsoft just hates me. Either way, I don't want to bother with this--albeit temporary--fix anymore. However, my ethernet port is broken (internally, I assume). Upon plugging the ethernet cable into my port, I get a notification saying that the cable is INDEED connected and that I've got a speed of 100 MB/s. Upon attempting to surf, however, I see that 1.) the internet isn't reading the connection and 2.) I'm angry for trying this temporary solution.
I went around in the network connections deal and bridged the connection between my Wireless Network Connect and my Local Area Connection. Doing this gave me internet: Internet slower than dial-up.
If anyone has any advice for me, I would greatly appreciate it. GREATLY.
Thanks,
Eleven
Will this work for ps3? I know i have built in wifi but.....I have a wireless n router and not taking full potential of it. I ran the speedtest on my laptop to see what kind of mega bits I was getting turns out, over 3 (i have a N card for my laptop). I'm no where close to that with my built in wifi of the ps3 so can this work/help? I also have a 360 so before I get blasted lol I love my 360 too!!
=D
I just fiddled with this and it WORKS!
1. Plug Crossover from Xbox to Laptop (Make sure Xbox is OFF)
2. Hit Start > Type Run in the Search Bar.
3. Brings up a little window, Type " ncpa.cpl " into that window. Run
4. Brings up Network Connections.
5. Right-Click your Wireless Connection > Properties > Sharing tab
6. Click "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" > OK
7. You probably don't have to, but Repair for giggles.
8. Turn on your Xbox.
On Windows Vista:
Simply plug the cable into your xbox 360 and into your laptop or PC.
Go to your control panel > network and sharing center and click manage network connections.
Select your wireless connection and your LAN connection (ctrl + click), right click on any selected and choose the Add to Bridge option.
Your laptop will receive the internet connection and send the connection to the Xbox 360.
XP is the same process, the bridge can be added from the Network Connections area. I do not currently have access to Windows 7 but it is highly likely that the process is the same again.
please respond!
Network Could not be connected
The device hooked up is not responding
i think it says something like that
PLZ HELP!
After I checkmark the "Allow other users to connect through this computers internet connection" and press okay, I get this message:
Internet connection sharing cannot be enabled
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP adress that is required for automatic IP adressing
If this thread isnt dead id love a response
I had the same issue, once I figured everything else out. I
Open the Internet Sharing properties and make sure the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" is UNCHECKED.
For some reason, the XBox won't connect to the internet if this is enabled. Disable it and everything should be fine.
will that work ?
EVERYONE READ THIS!! THIS IS WHY THE MAJORITY OF YOU CAN'T GET THIS TO WORK!
Most likely the Ethernet cable you are using is wrong. You need a CROSSOVER cable, not a PATCH cable. Most cables have it labeled on them what they are.
I was trying to do this with a patch cable, and it wasn't working. I went to radioshack and bought a crossover ethernet cable, and BAM!
No bridging, just the simple instrustions.
1. Just right click on your wireless connection (computer or laptop).
2. Click on Properties.
3 Go to advanced tab or wireless tab (xp or vista) and check "Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection".
That is it!
I tried this on both a Windows XP laptop and a Windows Vista laptop.
Both work flawlessly.
CROSSOVER ETHERNET CABLE!!!

The sharing tab will be in either Wireless Network Connection or Local Area Connection but never both. As long as the top box is unchecked you should be OK.
Sorry I didnt make this clear before hand.
Dont worry if u cant c the sharing tab. it will only b in 1 of the connections (wireless Network or local area) this is normal if u cant c it in 1 or the other.
1) Connect ethernet cable to PC/Laptop and xbox console.
2) Open Network Connections (Start-Run-ncpa.cpl).
**3) Right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
4) Click the Sharing tab and make sure the top box is UNCHECKED!
5) When finished, repeat steps 3 and 4 for Local Area Connection. If there is no Sharing tab, don't worry!!
6) Highlight both Wireless Network Connection and Local Area Connection, right click, and Create Bridge. You should then notice your Wireless Network Connectiondrops down with the new Bridge Connection
7) The most important part now is to right click Local Area Connection and Add To Bridge. You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live.
1) Connect ethernet cable to PC/Laptop and xbox console.
2) Open Network Connections (Start-Run-ncpa.cpl).
3) Right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
4) Click the Sharing tab and make sure the top box is UNCHECKED!

I hope this solved the problem and if it has, happy gaming!
If you cant see the sharing tab in Wireless Network Connection you will see it in Local Area Connection. Check it out and let me know if you get it fixed.
Good luck.
ok guys I figured out the problem that I was having. I kept getting an error saying that the LAN connection is already using an IP that is needed for sharing. Well I figured the problem was that 192.168.0.1 is used by my router as the default. I changed the router address to 192.168.1.0 and the ranges from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200. This setting should make your router restart and you should be able to get it working just fine..
Before I did this change my internet was working fine, but I couldnt click on share connection because of the error above and I couldnt bridge them either because once I did, I lost internet connection.. So if you are having this problem give it a try.
what.

4* BUT
If i do this with my mac laptop will it mess with the internet settings for normal web browsing ?, because if it does, my dad will flip.
Answer this QuickQuestion and you'll have yo-self 5*
I went to http://192.168.0.1 for my D-Link router and logged in.
On most routers it is:
Username: admin
Password: (no password)
Once logged in, I found where my DNS server IPs were listed. On the left side-bar, Wizard was highlighted. On the top bar, I clicked Status. Under WAN I found my DNS IPs. Finally, I manually inputted these into my 360 (rather than have it find them automatically) and tested the connection again. At this point it should have been working, but I am still getting the DNS fail error on the 360.
Any ideas anyone?
Copy the following into notepad and save it to a file called "OPENUP.BAT" (of type "all files"):
@ECHO OFF
@ECHO Configuring firewall to allow XBOX LIVE traffic.
@ECHO Please wait.
REM To allow Windows traffic:

Save it, then run the file as an administrator. Note that I don't know what ports are required for XBOX LIVE specifically, but the method should be obvious from the above.

I added these exceptions, but the 360 will not connect. Any suggestions?

I REALY WANT 2 PLAY MY HALO 3 on xbox live so please help.....thank you if u do.....'
I adore your complete Hayabusa. The colors on my sat are gunmetal and brown. If you complete all of the achievements on Halo 3, you get the Hayabusa sword. _
yup there we go- easier and less complicated than this, But Good Instructable Walamoonbeam
To be honest, I suggest you make a new instructable that fixes the more basic/complex problems that people [such as myself] have faced.
For example:
[PC]
Configuring IP Ads. for the '360.
- also making/using compatible ones
Explain what a 'cross over cable' is' and how it can be utilized
- some people don't know what it is.
Explain a bit more 'in depth' of how to make your internet work with it.
- for example, show and tell [haha] how to 'Bridge Connections'
Other than that, it's a brilliant Instructable.
Although, I'm still having some problems that I can't solve, no matter what I do... Ahh well, I'll ask later.
I just did this and it worked. mental translation from Tiger to Leopard, but no big deal, really.
