Introduction: Using Cyanacrylic and Accelerator

About: Engineer making renewable energy products for African entrepreneurs.

This is partly a conclusion to the wheel disk instructable. We found a better way to attach them and it worked very well using a technique I've used for a long time.

Step 1: Materials and Prep

The goal here is to bond a plastic flange to a wheel disk so the disk holds its conical shape. We used:

1. Medium viscosity cyanacrylic glue (a super glue)
2. Cyanacrylic accelerator

Preparation involves cleaning your surface and roughing it up a little

Step 2: Apply Accelerator

To make this easy -- we applied accelerator to our flange. Accelerator doesn't cure - so this can be done first.

So spray a nice light coat onto your part.

Step 3: Apply Glue

Apply glue in the approximate area that your part will cover. A little extra is okay as it will be squeezed out.

Step 4: Press On

Press your part (coated in accelerator) onto the glued area immediatly. Apply pressure. Be very careful as the reaction is highly exothermic. It will likely get very hot and smoke a tiny bit. We noticed out glue turn yellow, then white/clear.

WARNING
THE GASES EMITTED ARE TOXIC (CONTAINING CYANIDE AMONG OTHER THINGS). USE CAUTION AND WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. THAT SWEET SMELL, IS NOT A HEALTHY THING TO BREATH. I KNOW IT SMELLS GOOD - BUT RESIST AND WALK AWAY.

Step 5: Finish Up

Sand down any excess and you're done!

An alternate method to spraying the accelerator on separately is:

1. Apply Glue
2. Press on Part so some glue seeps out
3. Spray on Accelerator

The accelerator causes a chain reaction which will allow for the same end goal (just a bit slower). You can also eliminate the accelerator altogether, but this glue takes awhile to cure on its own.
