http://www.vawt.tk After making the V10 I realized that off the shelf, cheap dc Motor requires alot of RPM, I do not want to gear something made of so light material that it does not have the mass to sustain the rotation, so I decided to design and build one that has more RPM yet has the same Blade area and that is when I decided to build the V8.
V8 is made from the follwing:

-8 x 3"x10' PVC pipe cut to shape as in rendering($9.89 each)(79.12 total)(vanes)
-2 x 2"X1" permanent caps (sewer pipes aisle)($1.99 each)(brackets)
-1 6" bike axle from an old bike (free or few $)(top axle)
-1 5" long male/female adaptor ($7.99)(bottom connection)
-1 9" hard plastic tricycle wheel (free)(center bracket assembly)
-24 .75"x1/8" screws ($1.99)(screws)
-1 Ametek dc motor ($60.00)(generator)
-frame made from 2x4 ($11.00)(frame)

Total of::: $164.08

Goal is to generate 100 watts at 35km/h

So I hope you guys enjoy this one like the ones before it.

Step 1: Vanes

The Vanes are made from white 3" PVC cut down the center.

Later, while it was spinning I realized that it was losing air in the middle, so I modded the vanes by adding another section of pvc in the middle. The photos will explain more of what I am saying.

But in future I should have cut the vanes to shape and that will double the cost of the pvc to $75.00.
note: I rendered a drawing for you to see how to cut your vanes (PVC).

I hope I explained it correctly..

And A 1/8" hole is drilled at each side and it is .5" from side and 1" away from bottom.

Again you have to alternate the pvc pipes because of the flange end.

That is it.

How do you control the speed to ensure the motor does not exceed max rpms?
mstehmeier says: Oct 23, 2012. 11:15 AM
dont you need somewhere for the air to go in the middle?
it should be designed like a tower fan blade. otherwise you have dead air pockets reducing efficiency

you could be correct, i think it does not matter for a small size vawt like this one.

It is too long, make it short and widen it so that u have gud power and also bearings which gives more energy

but how does it make is power i see no batteries or anything like that.right now i am build a VAWT and i wanted to see how magnets and ETC work?

The mill drives a "1 Ametek dc motor ($60.00)(generator)" to produce power. The USNavy electronics course is on-line, and would be as good as any resource to learn electrical theory, but don't expect it to be to be a step by step manual for designing, and constructing electrical power plants.

the way it goes is like this:
vawt+generator+charger controller+battery+convertor+appliance.

all i am showing here is vawt+off the shelf dc motor/generator(pmg)
if you need a custom build generator go here please http://www.instructables.com/id/Faroun-Savonius-Wind-Turbine/

thanks

i added a movie that show the spin on both. they both have a dc generator on them. all i had is a bit of gust wind as you will see from the video. later

The youtube video is here for those that are interested.

Have you measured output wattage at your usual wind speed? Also, slightly more involved question, do you know how these perform with other objects close to them? I'm imagining a big rectangular frame the size of a barn door full of them- at maybe 50 watts each that's a respectable amount of power.
faroun (author) in reply to PKMOct 5, 2008. 5:14 PM
I was getting 5watts at 5kmh wind, I need to get some tools to show you. wind speed gauge and ampmeter. my goal is to create 100 at 35kmh so maybe it is not crazy to say 50watt at 15-20kmh. I am going to correct my vanes to resemble my rendering (drawing)but I spent all the time I had for now...soon. note: it is so calm for the past few days I can't seem to be able to make a video...soon again. faroun
