I attached a strong chrome pole with metal fittings to the shed.
You could use a curtain pole.
Make sure it is at the correct height especially if you want to grow plants in a trough below ( see step 7). This uses the surplus water from the pockets above.

A sturdy branch will work in place of the pole, it also can look a little nicer, and definitely cheaper. I first saw it for hanging window curtains on Threadbanger. You can attach it on the hooks the same way as a normal pole.

that's just so beautiful. I've been using grocery bags filled with soil and tomato plants and just hanging them along the balcony. But this is waaaay better.
