In this Instructables I will show you how to set up a VNC server using Tight VNC. This tutorial will cover port forwarding and how you can use a VNC server.

Step 1: Installing Tight VNC

You will need to go to tightvnc.com and find the download link, here is the 64 bit version, here is the 32 bit version. After you downloaded it just follow the instructions on how to set it up. A reboot will be required for it to work!

Move on to the next step to find out how to configure it to the best settings.

Step 2: Configuration

First it is going to ask you what type of setup you would like, just select Typical.

Next it should ask about additional tasks, most of the time these have to be selected in order for Tight VNC to work.

Then chose a password for remote access (I'll talk about that later) and for the admin password, these should be different passwords. Make sure you do not select "Do not change" for either of them. That will make your server very insecure.

Step 3: The Final Setup

You will need to forward ports 5900 and 5800 by default. If you don't know how to do this, you can check out my tutorial on forwarding ports here (tinyurl.com/Instructables36).

I would name the port forwards as Tight VNC or something like that.

That's it! That's all you have to do, now your Tight VNC Server is ready! See the next step to find out how to use it.

Step 4: Uses for Tight VNC

The main uses for VNC Servers are for viewing your desktop from somewhere else. You can do this with your smartphone or another computer.

Android App - Remotix VNC This one is paid with a free version, the free version only allows 15 minutes of viewing time, but I'm sure if you search Tight VNC in Google Play some other good free ones will come up.

Apple - VNC Viewer This is also available on Android but I haven't looked into it, this app is the same thing as Android, you have to pay for it but I'm sure there are good free ones out there.

When you enter your information on the app you may be asked for a username and password, those are the ones we made back in step 1 I believe. It will also ask for an IP address and a port, the port is 5900, 5800, or 5500. As far as the IP address you can find that in your router settings or by going here (whatismyip.com). What is my IP isn't always correct so I prefer to use my router settings, for how to do it that way go to the next step.

Step 5: Finding Your IP Address

First go to your start menu and search for CMD and hit enter. Once a little black box pops up type in " ipconfig " Without the quotes or spaces. Look for something that says "Default Gateway" there should be a number to the right of it - ex. 192.168.1.1 - enter that into the URL bar in your browser.

After that it will ask for a password, the default passwords can be found here (routerpasswords.com) just enter your router name brand.

Once you enter the password correctly it should look like the picture above. Then go to "Status" in there you should find "Default Gateway" on the left side (for me) under IPv4 on the side of the page. That is your IP address.
