Introduction: Valentine's Cake Pops

About: Community Manager for Instructables and Tinkercad.

What to do with extra marshmallow fondant?  I was going to just eat it, but then I decided to make cake pops!  Always tasty!

I'd never made cake pops covered in fondant, so I thought it was worth a try.  It was a little difficult to wrap them, but I think they look pretty cute :)

Step 1: Supplies

So, what are you going to need?

Supplies:
  • Cake Mix of Choice
  • Marshmallow Fondant - I made a double batch for the Valentine Rice Krispie Treats and had about half left (which is the 8oz recipe), this seemed good for coving the cake pops, but if you want to decorate them with more fondant, you are going to need to make a bit more.
  • Bag of Marshmallows (I used 8 oz)
  • Sticks
  • Sprinkles if you would like
  • Heart Cookie Cutters (or you can freehand it)  I like to get a lot of use out of things I buy so it's nice to invest if you can be inventive :)

Step 2: Make

Most know the procedure, but if you don't, here it is :)

Bake a cake.

Let it cool.  I broke it into 6 pieces to try to speed the cooling.

Crumble the cake.

Heat up marshmallows in microwave.  I went about a minute at a time at half power and then stirred and heated again till melted.

Mix melted marshmallow and cake.  You can put this in the fridge for a bit, but I found it wasn't necessarily helpful.

Time to form them!

I went with a similar method as the Rice Krispie Treats.  I shoved the mixture into the cookie cutter, but then I heaped it a bit to make it a bit more round.   Photo 7 shows this.

Don't put these in the fridge or freezer if you can help it.  If the cake mixture is cold, when you put the marshmallow fondant on them it gets all wet and sticky.

Step 3: Cover and Stick

Time to cover them in fondant.  I didn't really find a best way to do this, but I'll talk about some ways I tried.

Using the next size up cookie cutter, I cut out two hearts in fondant.  I then wrapped this around the heart.  I think this would have worked nicely except the dip in the top of the hearts didn't meet up very well at the top of the heart.

Next I treated it like the rice krispie treats and just wrapped it around starting from the front and closed it up in the back.

Another way I tried that I didn't photograph is I wrapped it around the heart (like ^) but wrapped it around the top and then cut the excess of the sides of the heart.

I'd love to hear any tips on covering cake pops in fondant.

Once it is covered, stick a stick in the bottom.

Step 4: Decorate and Enjoy

You can decorate them if you would like.  I tried out a few things.

Cut out smaller hearts to decorate them.  Use corn syrup to stick them to each other.

Us corn syrup to stick sprinkles to the pop.  You can do a specific design like I did with the pearl sprinkles on the pink one in the back right or just completely cover part of the pop with corn syrup and drench it in sprinkles like with the white one in the middle back.

Now eat them!
