I've made Red Velvet cupcakes every year for some time now. But this year I decided to try something fun and new. It's always fun to make something special for friends and family (It always puts a smile on my face) and holidays are the best time to get creative with homemade gift giving.

In this tutorial, I will explain the recipe and steps it takes to make these wonderful whoopie pies as well as show you a fun way to package them for valentines gifts.

I just know all your friends and family are going to love these homemade heart shaped whoopie pies; you made them!

Step 1: Ingredients

For the Cookies:
  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 8 tbsp. butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • red food coloring
For the Frosting:
  • 8 0z cream cheese
  • 5 tbsp. butter
  • 2 1/2 tbsp. vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Also...You will need some parchment paper, some scrap cardboard to make a heart template, and two cookie sheets.

Step 2: Prepping for the Cookies

  • Tear two pieces of parchment paper that fits the two cookie sheets.
  • Create a heart template from a scrap of cardboard.  My heart was about 2 1/2" horizontal and 2 3/4" vertically.  (Using cardboard makes it easier when tracing)
  • Trace hearts onto the parchment paper.  I used a thick sharpie marker to make the lines easier to see
  • Place the drawn side of the parchment paper downwards on the cookie sheet.

I've never made my own frosting before (I usually use the stuff in the tub for $1). Does this recipe for frosting taste like cream cheese? Or does it taste like vanilla?

I have a cake mix to use up. Would this work if I just follow the cake mix directions for the "cookies" section, then used your ingredients list for the frosting section?

But depending on the type of cake mix you have, you may need to add red food coloring to the batter. But other than that, using the cookies recipe for the cake mix should work.

Ah wait, I think I misunderstood. Would you describe the "cookies" as being more like actual cookies, or more like pieces of cake? I guess I just assumed they would be soft and cake-y since they are red velvet flavor.

If I use a cake mix, should I make it as cake or as cookies?

If the cake mix has a recipe for a cookie version, I would suggest using that. If not, I'm not sure if the cake would keep its shape when baking. But, you could use little heart shaped cupcake molds if you want to use the regular recipe for the cake mix.
