As several people already said this CAN destroy the cd drive. Not only can it destroy the CD drive, but also the Hard Disc Drive. Hard disc's does not like vibrations, and the platters inside them will easily get destroyed, rendering your victims computer completely useless. Please do not try this "prank", it will most likely result in you having to buy your victim a new computer.

vibrations are bad for your computer it might shake loose or break something and totally screw up the drive which is probably very expensive

You know that you can destroy the CD drive of vour "victim" with this "prank" ?

There are several ways that this prank can damage or destroy a drive, aside from the afore mentioned CD pieces.

First, CD drives are not designed to spin unbalanced loads that is why most CD's are round. There are several non circular CD's, like business card CD's, but even business card CD's are balanced to prevent excessive axial loads on the motor.

Excessive axial loads can cause the shaft to bend slightly or spin off axis. Off-axis rotation puts more force on the bearings and the other components internal to the drive's motor, possibly causing those components to fail prematurely. Additionally, the tolerances within the motor can decrease to the point where they rub against one another increasing the heat and damaging the drive.

Second, the CD itself will be subjected to vibrations and stresses not designed for. If ripples caused by off-axis rotation become significant they can scratch the laser's lens, damage the tray, or circuit boards. If the CD isn't strong enough to deal with the stresses, it will simply fall to pieces in the drive.

Best case, you've annoyed someone and decreased the life of the drive. Worst case, you've severely annoyed someone and destroyed the drive.

This can be very damaging to a CD drive regardless. It is not the fragments I would be worried about. The drive is not designed to spin when unbalanced like that.
I briefly skimmed this link, it seems to describe what I'm worried about pretty well: http://www.mscience.com/faq17.html
It seems that you can easily permanently damage the drive, and also this may cause the CD to shatter which could also permanently damage the drive.

Wow.. No :/

I can't see this being good for the drive, nor safe for the hard drive.
There's more creative and safe ways to prank your friends.
