Introduction: Vibrator - a Layered Shot

Picture of Vibrator - a Layered Shot

Why do they always give drinks such strange names? I think bartenders just like to make people blush.

Following this instructable, you can make your own layered shot so you won't need to go to the bar and ask for a vibrator.

Step 1: Ingredients

Picture of Ingredients

For this shot, you'll need:

  • Crème de bananes
  • Coconut flavored rum
  • Irish cream

You'll also want a shot glass and a spoon (a chilled metal spoon works best for layering).

Step 2: Layer the Shot

Picture of Layer the Shot

Fill a third of the shot glass with the banana liquor.

Hold the spoon against the glass, above the first layer, and slowly pour the Irish cream over the spoon into the shot. You can use a chilled spoon but it is not necessary.

Add the final layer, the coconut rum, to top up the glass.

The different alcohols have different specific gravity measurements, which allow them to float above the other ingredients if added with a careful pour. Even if you add the ingredients in the wrong order, if they do not mix too much when you pour, they will settle in the same three bands.

My wife is a fan of the show, Deadliest Catch. One grisly captain who passed away, Phil Harris, apparently drank a drink similar to this called a Duck Fart. I had never heard of it before, nor did I know that a layered shot was even in existence. The Duck Fart is apparently made by using Almond liqueur, Bailey's and an Irish Whiskey...probably Jamison. My wife wanted to make it but I was not too enthused as the bottle of almond liquer would probably sit around for 10 years afterwards. The other ingredients would get consumed regularly and be gone in 6 months or less. It is amazing what people combine. Just give me Bourbon, tequila, vodka or whiskey simply mixed with a suitable diluent and I am happy.

I'm a big fan of Deadliest Catch too, and while Capt Phil is most associated with the Duck Fart - all of the Capts (so far as I can tell) have had at least one. The recipe is actually:

Bailey's, Crown Royal, and Kahlua.

The Crown makes it a pretty aggressive shot, I'll say that. Most of the people I've subjected it to weren't big fans. I like one or two in an evening, if I'm in that mode. That being said, I'd probably be silly enough to go shot for shot with those captains at least once, given the chance. (RIP Capt Phil!) If your Mrs. can do a whiskey shot without flinching, this'll probably be right in her wheelhouse, and you won't probably have to worry about a bottle of something sitting there for years unused. You'll have to post if she gave it a go, and what she thought of it.

As for layered shots - there's a TON of them... probably the most common (at least 15-20 years ago) would be a B-52 (Kahlua, Bailey's, and Grand Marnier). Or you can just pour 'em on the rocks & forget the layering, it's a nice drink.

*cheers*

Why not take the little lady out for a show and A drink. You order it for her and enjoy the eve. Sounds of things that you are afraid the bottle will sit for 10 years, stick with one because it has multiple shots of liquor in it. But biscotti is wonderful with the almond liquor in it. I take that stuff to the BYOB parties and forget it.

You can always use that almond liquor in coffee or other iced drinks. If you like a good Martini, try equal portions of khalua (or some other coffee liquor), your almond stuff (or frangelico, what I used) and pinnacle whipped vodka, or just a good clean neutral flavored vodka. Shake all three over ice, and serve in a chilled martini glass. Warning, it packs a punch.

If you want something to do with almond liqueur you have sitting around, layer it with raspberry vodka and irish cream for a bakewell tart shot :)

Man. I'll have to make one of these.

parisusa (author)2016-08-25

Oh okay! :)

parisusa (author)2016-08-25

This is one big "shot". But thanks for showing the layers!

It might look larger in the photos, but the glass I used holds the same volume as a standard shot glass.

All three ingredients are pretty easy to sip, if you don't want to down it all in one go.
