Introduction: Vintage R2-D2 Christmas Ornament

Star Wars Episode VII came out last week and I've seen it twice. Currently I'm working on building a hyperdrive so we can join them in a galaxy far far away... But in the meantime I figured I'd turn my 1970's R2-D2 action figure into a christmas tree ornament.

Step 1: Clean It Up

The toy is a bit worn and the sticker has yellowed. A hot wash will peel the old sticker off and clean the dirt from the dome and legs.

New stickers can be found and printed out here: http://www.erikstormtrooper.com/r2stickers.htm

You could use glossy photo paper if you like the sheen but I just used plain printer paper and am happy with the result. After printing and cutting out the body decal you can affix it to R2 with regular stick glue. Just be careful when applying it to the body. You will have to realign it a few times to get it right.

Step 2: Gluing Everything in Place

The legs on this old R2 unit were a bit loose so I hot glued the legs in place.

Step 3: Drill a Hole

We need to drill a hole in the center of the dome for the hook-screw to fit into. This will let us hang it like an ornament. Wrap R2 in cloth to protect the body decal and put R2 into a vice. Using the smallest drill bit you have drill directly down the center of its dome. Go slow to prevent cracking the dome.

Step 4: Screw in the Hook-screw

Screw in the hook-screw and voila! We have the droid you're looking for.

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy
