Introduction: Water Coloring With Fruit Flavored Drops

Using fruit flavored water enhancers, you can create water color paintings that smell delicious!

Step 1: What You'll Need

  • small paintbrush (unless you have a lot of fruit drops to work with, then you can use big ones too!)
  • Fruit drops (The ones with the most vibrant colors seem to be minute maid's brand)
  • A container to hold the juice drops (I used a plastic lid for a drink. It worked out great for each drop of color. Also I added some tape under the lid where the straw goes through to avoid leakage)
  • Paper (Cardstock works nicely)
  • Water (for diluting the color and getting lighter tones)
  • Paper towels

Step 2: Getting Started

Using the paint brush, dip it into your color of choice. It's a good idea to have a spare piece of paper to test out the richness of the color. Use water to lighten the colors and try mixing the flavor drops for even more paint options!

Step 3: Tips and Tricks

A couple tips to help you with your water color masterpiece:

  • Start with basic shapes, like the kitty's head is a circle with two triangles on top.
  • Outline with light colors. If you start with dark colors, there's no easy way to lighten them. Such as the purple color on the kitty above. After the paint dries a bit, add some dark colors to add shading or markings.
  • Experiment with colors by mixing your fruit drops and adding a bit of water

Step 4: Start Painting!

I decided to paint a giraffe. I started with an oval for the head and then did an outline for the body using the light yellow color. After it dries a little, I added some orange to it for a shadow effect. The paint was still a little wet so it created a nice blended effect.

I also added a smaller giraffe in the background. It's better to draw background elements first and let them dry. If not the paints will mix together and make the picture look strange.

One thing to be aware of too is smudging the paint. I had several instances of this happening. Before you go to paint over something, either make sure your water drops are dry or don't let your hand come into contact with the paper!

Step 5: Finishing Up

I kept my painting simple because I was using small brushes. It allowed me to make more details, like the spots, the tail, and the grass! Make sure you let your paint dry before hanging it up for the world to see.

The art work will have a nice, subtle fruit smell for awhile. It will be strong at first, but soon after it will be less noticeable unless you hold up the painting to your nose.

Despite mixing different brands of fruit drops, it still smelled surprisingly nice!

Definitely avoid licking your masterpiece. It may smell delicious but it will not taste delicious.
