Watermelon Slicer

Watermelon Slicer
This is a guide showing you how to make a homemade watermelon slicer from common items you might find in your garage.

You will have to cut it a little beforehand, but it will make those final few cuts a lot faster (and more fun).

Step 1Materials

Materials
To make your watermelon slicer, you will need:

4 Feet of PVC pipe (I used 1 1/4 inch, but other thicknesses may work as well)
4 Right angle elbow pieces
Roughly 8 Feet of thin metal wire

A power drill
A hacksaw

Cool, I'm surprised there aren't a lot of replies on this.

Garroting your watermellon! :) If you want thinner wire, check out guitar strings.

Hmmm... here's a though... some kind of platform, somewhat like a cutting board that's smaller than the frame, and a couple inches high. That should eliminate the need to carry the melons to the garage. ;) If you really want to get complicated, maybe even make some kind of hinge system so it always comes down straight. But that's going a bit far with it, methinks.

If the wire was more taught and smaller gauge it would preform a lot better.

This is awesome, sort of like a giant size of those strawberry and egg slicers you use in the kitchen. I would suggest tying off each individual strand so that you can get each one as taut as possible. Is there a possibility of cutting out triangle-shaped wedges in the side of the PVC so the wire would be closer to the bottom? Or would that be too unstable?
