You will need:

*1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT EVAPORATED)
*1 Large Pan. The pan must allow the water to cover the can with out boiling over at a hard boil.
*1 Egg Timer/Alarm/Reminder System (Something so you don't forget about it)
*1 Washcloth or Small Towel
*A Stove top/Range
*Tongs (The longer the better)
*Can Opener
*3 Hours of spare time :)

This method is not the best of ideas on any level, even with all the caveats. Here is the nestle site http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=32293. It explains three just as simple or simpler ways to do this with out blowing stuff up.

to protect my wifes pot, and to keep the can from creating a mini vacume between it and the pan. enjoy

I love this stuff, been making it for years. Really, it's dulce de leche but when you try explaining it to people, it's easier to just say it is caramel. This stuff can also be done in a pot next to the fire while camping. It goes great with s'mores.

I have never bovered with a cloth or removing the label, just chuck it in water, boil it, turn off the heat then just leave it in the pan overnight

the cloth protects my wife's pots and the label is messy at the end when it comes off on it's own.
