Hace unas semanas compré un generador eléctrico, que pesa unos 50 Kg cuando está con el tanque de combustible lleno. Yo tengo 66 años y no estoy en condiciones de levantar objetos pesados, así que para trasladarlo unos pocos metros desde el lugar donde está guardado hasta donde lo pondría en funcionamiento, debería llamar a alguien para que me ayude. En caso de emergencia eléctrica, eso es demasiado pretender.

Por lo tanto, busqué la forma de agregarle ruedas, pero estas tienen que permitir al aparato permanecer sólidamente fijo al piso cuando está funcionando. Además, dado que el aparato está en garantía, no puedo hacerle ninguna modificación, y por lo tanto tuve que hacer las ruedas de quita y pon, o sea soldarlas sobre soportes que se pudieran quitar fácilmente sin dejar rastros.



A few weeks ago I bought an electric generator, which weighs about 50 kg when the fuel tank is full. I have 66 years and I am not able to lift heavy objects, so to move a few meters from the place where it is stored to where it would work, I should call someone to help me. In power emergencies, this is too pretend.

Therefore, I looked for ways to add it wheels, but these have to allow the device to remain firmly fixed to the floor when working.
Moreover, since the unit is under warranty, I can not make any changes, and therefore had to make removable wheels, or weld on brackets that could be easily removed without leaving a trace.






Step 1: Materiales (materials)

Por suerte, los tacos de goma sobre los cuales reposa el aparato están ligeramente desplazados hacia el centro, lo cual me permitió hacer un diseño tal que solo al levantar el otro extremo, las ruedas apoyan sobre el piso.

Busqué y hallé entre las cosas usadas que guardo, dos rulemanes cuyo único defecto es que a alta velocidad hacen ruido, pero sirven a la perfección para lo que los necesito.

Luckily, the rubber pads on which the appliance rests are slightly displaced toward the center, which allowed me to make such a design that only in lifting the other end, the wheels rest on the floor.

I searched and found among the used things I keep, two bearings whose only fault is that at high speed are noisy, but they serve perfectly for what I need.

Step 2: The Only Purchase (la �nica Compra)


Medí el diámetro interior de los rulemanes y compré dos tornillos de acero que entraran lo más exacto posible, con sus tuercas.

Dado que tanto las cabezas de los tornillos como las tuercas eran demasiado gruesas, las corté a la mitad con la amoladora de mano. Con chapa delgada de aluminio hice unos bujes para que los tornillos ajustaran dentro de los rulemanes.

I measured the inner diameter of the bearings and bought two steel screws to fit as accurate as possible, with nuts.

Since both heads of the screws and nuts were too thick, cut them in half with the hand grinder. With thin aluminum sheet I made some bushings so that the screws fit into the bearings.


Step 3: Los Soportes (the Holders)


Los soportes no podían ser iguales, porque de un lado está el filtro de aire del motor, y del otro no hay nada, está mucho más despejado. De todas maneras eso solo significó alguna diferencia en las medidas, no en la forma básica.

Tomé un trozo de barra plana de hierro, bastante robusta, y la corté en dos trozos de manera que pudieran ser agarrados con tornillos al esqueleto del aparato. Para fijarlas en un lugar con respecto a este, y teniendo en cuenta el peso que debían soportar, soldé una gruesa pestaña sobre la cual descansará el aparato, y otras dos no tan gruesas para mantener los soportes en una posición fija.

Mediante un tornillo y una placa de hierro aseguré cada soporte a un extremo inferior del esqueleto.

Una vez terminados los soportes y cerciorado de que se mantendría cada uno en su lugar, soldé los tornillos, puse los rulemanes y los apreté con las tuercas. Una mano de pintura negra ayuda a disimular las imperfecciones.


The mountings could not be equal because at one side is the engine air filter and at the other nothing, it is much clearer. Anyway, that just meant a difference in the measures, not in basic form.

I took a piece of flat bar iron, fairly robust, and cut into two pieces so that they could be caught with screws to the skeleton of the device. To fix in place with respect to this, and taking into account the weight that should endure, I soldered a thick tab on which to rest the device, and two not so thick to keep the bars in a fixed position.

Using screws and a steel plate made sure each bracket to a lower end of the skeleton.


Upon completion of the supports and made sure that each would remain in place, I soldered the screws, put the bearings and tighten them with nuts. A coat of black paint to help conceal imperfections.

One of the things I appreciate about Instructables is that a reader can adapt and expand an idea published by another author. That was always possible with ideas published in the old DIY magazines, like <u>Popular Mechanics</u>. I know it had or has a Spanish edition and is probably available in Argentina, too. But, Instructables allows instantaneous feedback and dialogue between authors and readers. That is not really possible with magazines and their readers.
Yes, here is Mec&aacute;nica Popular, is to say Popular Mechanics. But it is far from the 1950's magazine. Today it is a very well made collection of commercial ads.
Old issues of <u>Popular Mechanics</u> in English are archived on-line. &nbsp;This link will take you to<a href="http://books.google.com/books/serial/ISSN:00324558?rview=1&lr=&sa=N&start=540"> the English edition for about 1960</a>. &nbsp;From there you can go backward or forward for earlier or later issues. &nbsp;I do not know if the older issues in Spanish are available, too, or not. &nbsp;It would be worth checking.<br> <br> The man who cut my hair when I was a boy had <u>Popular Mechanics</u> in his barbershop. &nbsp;When he retired he asked my mother if I would want his old magazines. &nbsp;I learned how to use power woodworking tools from those magazines. &nbsp;After I was married, I used what I learned from those magazines to make quite a bit of our furniture. &nbsp;It is sad to see<u> Popular Mechanics</u> today is little more than a collection of consumer products reviews.<br> <br> I am guessing that certain changes in society and technology have brought the changes you mention in the magazine. 1- Consumer products are less suited for repair now than they once were. &nbsp;Welded plastic cases, integrated electronic circuits, and factories in the Pacific Rim all make it more difficult for the home handyman to get parts and to replace them. 2-People's employment concentrates more on clerical tasks and less on using mechanical arts. 3-The standard of living has risen so that it is easier to replace rather than repair items. &nbsp;4-Technological advances make something that might have been repaired once obsolete so that the replacement model gives greater performance for the same or lower cost. &nbsp;
Yes, Phil, it is as you say. If my radio breaks, I must throw it to the waste, it is a pity. That is a &quot;technologic inflation&quot;, maybe it is essential to the universe operation, as the expansion. Last saturday I found many computer elements in trash, I got them and I am trying to recover something. But as I know almost nothing electronic, the only things I recovered was some coolers. I put one of these over a hole in a wall to get hot air from a calefactor to my bedroom (this is a good use), but I don't know what to do with the others. If I throw them to the waste, surely the &quot;clever boys&quot; of my city kick them down the street until destroy them totally.<br><br>Another thing I lament is the lack of basic inputs. When I was a boy, one could buy almost anything at the hardware store, or at drugstore or even pharmacy.
