This instructable will show you how to make your own coasters from wine corks in a few easy steps. They can add a touch of style to any table or simply with a cup of tea or glass of wine. I hope you enjoy making them!

Step 1: What You Will Need

1. Craft knife
2. Cutting mat/ suitable surface for cutting on
3. Collection of wine corks
4. Ruler
5. Marker/ pen/ pencil
6. Glue gun
7. Cork sheet

Note: If you do not have any cork sheet, it is still possible to make these coasters. You can glue the corks down to old, plain coasters or use any material you have at home that is suitable. (Make sure this material will not scratch a table!)

Step 2: Measuring

The first step is to measure out your cork slices. You can make them as wode as you want depending on how thick youbwant your coaster to be, but i would reccomend about 4mm. Measure out and mark the slices using a ruler and thin marker, all along the cork. Make sure they are all the same size or you will end up with a wobbly glass! You may need to cut more than one cork per coaster, depending on the size of the pieces.

Step 3: Cutting the Corks

Next, you will need to cut the cork into slices along the markings you have just made. Take your craft knife. If you have an adjustable one like me, push it out a good bit, this will make it easier. Lay the cork horizontally on the cutting board and cut along the markings. Take your time and try to cut as straight as possible. If one is too big, you can trim it carefully with the craft knife afterwards.

Step 4: Cutting the Cork Sheet

Lay out all your cork pieces in the desired shape. I chose a square because it was the easiest and looked the cleanest. Cut a piece of cork sheet so that they will all fit neatly onto it. If it is a circle, use a compass or circular object to draw and cut the cork. If it is a square, make sure that it is straight. You can use your craft knife and cutting board, or a pair of scissors for this.

Step 5: Gluing the Cork Pieces Down

You can use a glue gun or strong glue for this. I used a glue gun. Make sure that the glue is properly hot before using or the pieces will fall off. Add a dab of glue under the cork pieces and push them down in the correct places. ( I didn't have clear glue sticks, so I used sparkly green, but it doesn't matter because the glue shouldn't be able to be seen). It adds a nice touch if you allow the purple wine stained pieces to show up, or printed dates, where possible.

Step 6: Trimming

Finally, you can choose to leave your coasters the way they are or you can trim off the excess cork sheet around the edges. I used a craft knife to do this, and it added a nice affect.
