Winter hummingbirds need help in sub-freezing weather. This simple feeder can be made for $50 in an hour, works with seed feeders too, and is cheap and cheerful to watch. All you need is a chick brooder spot lamp from a hardware store, a flat pan feeder and a plastic flower pot. A few screws, and your hummers will thank you for it.
Take the wire cage off the spot lamp and bend it slightly flat so it rests square on the top of the feeder and the prong ends of the wires clip on the rim of the pot (right pot) or in holes drilled into the rim ( left pot). If the wire cage was missing from the lamp you can easily make the same up with coat hangers and twist tie/wire the centre crossing. Attach the cross wire piece to the the feeder with either cable tie down clips (any hardware store sells these) or and strap, clip etc, with screws or nuts, as long as it's snug. Avoid attaching too close to the centre of the feeder or the screws may interfere with the base connection of the pan.
Cut a 1" hole below the top of the flower pot to pull the plug and wire through from the lamp. Slide the lamp up inside and hold in place with two screws/bolts through the reflector into the flower pot.
You can easily drill a hole for a hanger, or side bracket to suspend it, pop wire frame off and put in a 60 watt light, reattach and good to go. For extra protection from snow and rain I glued a clear 15" pot saucer to the top to protect the birds and waterproof the lamp housing below.
