You might have heard about joystick used for gaming and in cranes and big machines , car gear lever etc. in these all joystick is attached to the main computer but in this tutorial I will show you to make a 'wireless' joystick. This is a simple but fun joystick made out of a circuit board of a remote controlled car . It is very easy to use because it is more efficient to use joystick to perform tasks rather than pressing buttons forcefully .It is inspired from mini joystick Anyone who own an old running remote controlled car can make this joystick. Here is video of it working :-
And this is the another video showing its working in dark :-
Step 1: Working
It is primarily based upon the r/c circuit the switches of the transmitter side have been bye passed and the switch function is controlled by the joystick with one terminal with joystick and the other with contact wires . This acts as switch and gives signal to the receiver . It can be clearly understood in the shown picture.
Step 2: Look
This is a perfect device for the people who want to run their machines with a joystick sitting anywhere without the attachment of wires . I was having an old r/c car transceiver and I thought that something interesting could be made out of this transceiver and the idea for wireless joystick came out and I went to my workshop area finding all tools and materials required .
Step 3: Portability
This is very portable and can be held with one hand and the operation can also be done with the same hand . We can attach extra antenna for better range of operation by the joystick . The addition of antenna makes it bulky otherwise it is tiny and portable . The modification had been done on the transmitter side and the receiver can be used at desired place .
Step 4: Things Required
The things required to make this were :-
- r/c car transceiver
- soda can
- soldering iron
- copper wire
- duct tape
Step 5: Transmitter
We can easily get it from the old r/c car by opening it but make sure that all the wires sw1,sw2,gnd,vcc,antenna wires should be at the right place . The transmitter can be taken out of remote and the receiver can be taken out of car . The joystick is to be connected to transmitter
Step 6: Making Antenna Stand
Firstly cut a rectangular piece of aluminium sheet out of soda can and then fold it . Then pierce a hole out of it with diameter to trap the antenna . The lower hole must be narrower than the upper one . Solder it properly and make sure that the antenna should be movable otherwise the joystick will not move sideways. The lower end o antenna should be outside the metal sheet and movable vertically opposite.
Step 7: Making Base
Now take a cardboard piece and then cut it into rectangular piece and join the joystick to cardboard using a duct tape. If the solder had been removed while doing this then it is your choice to solder it again or leave it as it is because now the joystick has got enough strength to stand alone and also the antenna should not be bent otherwise the joystick will not work properly.
Step 8: Joining Wires
Now we need the two naked wires that can conduct electricity and work as switch with mutual combination with joystick. firstly take one wire make it pass through the cardboard and make it stand vertically and then solder it properly. Repeat the same for the next side . Now take another wire and solder it downside the standing wire to be used as terminal . Do this on both sides.
Step 9: R/C Car Transceiver
Don't open the car . Firstly open the remote and then turn the transmitter on and test which two terminals act as switch . You can do this with a copper wire . After identifying mark them with marker.
Step 10: Soldering Tips
Now solder the terminals with the joystick the joystick wire should be connected to two terminals and the contact wires to the other two terminals , it is shown in the step 2 "Working" diagram . For more strength cover it with hot glue or duct tape and make sure to cover it properly. And place the wires in such a way that the two different terminal wires should not coincide with each other.
Step 11: Joining Battery
The gnd and vcc wires are to be used as terminals for battery . The vcc wire as positive terminal and gnd wire as negative terminal . Solder it properly and test it before joining permanently.
Step 12: Joining
Now fold the joystick and the battery upon the transmitter board and also make sure that the switches are not being pressed themselves if it happens then it will led to malfunctioning . So, to prevent this take a cardboard piece and then fold its corners and place it above the switches as a cover.
Step 13: Making Box
Take a cardboard piece and cover the joystick bottom with cardboard and make a box around it . Cover it completely with duct tape and make sure that there is space for antenna and the two contact wires and they should move freely.
Step 14: Making Tester
Use the receiver board to be used at desired places gnd and vcc for terminals l,r,f,b wires for the operations and do not forget to attach switch to prevent battery drainage . To make tester join l and r wires for one led and f and b wires for the other led . This tester had been made only to test not a part of joystick .
Step 15: End!
Try to move the joystick to and fro to identify any jamming then grease it otherwise it would work finely . Shake it to identify any loose part . And then cover it properly with the duct tape . If desired you can also make crafts over it . And then test it with our tester.I had used it for my car and crane . It worked fine for the all the time but one day it fell from my hand from balcony to ground . It was covered full but then also some of the wires got damaged and I had to reopen it fully and found the terminal wire cut off from the soldered part . But overall it worked nice Its range is about 25 meters in radius by using antenna and 10 meters without antenna . I felt easy to use it as it is gesture controlled rather than small buttons and switches . Overall it worked nice and was too much portable for me carry it in my bag ! This might be a good idea for helping people who feel comfortable using the joystick !
