To get an authentic experience when playing arcade games on your PC or XBox Live Arcade, you need legitimate arcade hardware. A good stick still costs a fair bit of coin however it’s not that hard to make one of your own at reduced cost. This tutorial covers building a housing, installing the arcade components, converting the controller to allow for external inputs and wiring the whole thing up. I want to thank you for the instructable. I saw it first in your own blog, and you explained everything very well. I think your way to organize everything, using spade crimps and terminals and labeling the terminals was awesome.

I was also at a loss on how to deal with the ground wire, but by reading your tutorial again and doing some tests (as you suggested) I understood how it works.

Hi I have a question about using an xbox 360 console as the housing for this joystick. I want want to put buttons on the side for pinball too. But the 360 has perforated plastic at the sides for air flow. Would this be strong enough to attach buttons or would i need to reinforce with a piece of wood?

You could use the same method to make the required connections to a PS3 controller. Could be worth using a non-genuine PS2 controller and connecting it with an adapter as it would be cheap and the circuitry would be easier.

I'd also like to add that the PS3 has support for standard USB gamepads. I bought a simple Logitech with a D pad, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons, and two analogue sticks. I use it whenever a fourth person comes to play on the PS3.

Haven't played a Wii in a while but I hear they have plenty of classic titles that would benefit. It could be the modern super advantage!

I checked the prices and the Battle Joystick (http://images.e-nuc.com/battle-joystick.jpg) is cheaper than the components to build this, at least in Uruguay. Anyway, I suppose the result would be of a much grater quality using arcade buttons and stick.
A good example of an arcade-type game is Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Very nice. I'm just about to embark on a similar project. Although, like Ben Heck, I'm thinking about using wireless controllers and leaving them functional and able to be removed.
