Step 3Solder the circuit together:

For the USB I just drilled three holes in a row and cut out the rest of the rectangle with an Xacto knife. The USB should be mounted in the plastic before you solder the connections.

So the USB, LED, and resistor are on top and the regulator is on the bottom. The wire lengths are just to have enough room to epoxy the top in before the bottom, 2"-3".

In those diagrams, how much voltage is going to the led? 9 volts from the battery or 5 from the regulator? I'm a bit inexperienced with circuits like this and don't want to use the wrong resistor for the led.

looks like a green/brown/red/gold resistor from the photos so he's using a 5.1k (5100Ω) resistor.

It depends. The LED is getting 5v from the regulator but it goes through a resistor first. The resistor probably lowers the voltage to about 2v for the led.

if the 5v doesn't work use the 9v. never test at the highest voltage always test from the lower voltage and work your way up

true but with the regulator it's alright to use almost any power. note i did say almost. i have made multiple of these they all worked with nine volts

if you go and buy these parts: -a 5v regulator -a nine volt battery -a female usb port - a 1/4 watt resistor -an led and copy my smallest design exactly exepet you have to filp-flop the leads going to the in and positive pins

i forgot to say this earlier but the 3 different ways were what i originally tried and the 3rd is the smallest (i tried to avoid using wires for more strength of the actual circuit when i was epoxying it) also the small rectangle connecting from the led (green wire) to the GRND piece of the regulator is the resistor (1/4 watt)

you can most defiantly remove the led, it is only used to show the status of the battery

But if you do, I would put in a small diode to make sure you don't blow out your regulator by accidentally reversing the current when you put in the battery.

it changes on what type of led that you use, if you want to find the right one look up a led calculator, put in the specs of the application that you are using it on and it will come out with the resistor that you should use

if you add a switch to one of the wires going to the usb and cut a slot in the case, you can turn it on and off so u dont kill ur battery.

Use colored wires, red for V+ and Black for GND...makes it easier to follow along. I also use Green/Yellow for audio Left/Right etc...
