You know you're looking at Youtube. You're doing it right now. Look! There! You're doing it, again! You say you need to escape from the workaday world? Why not just turn your office into your very own Youtube viewscreen?

*EDIT* New Video.

  • this project used a large format printer and a good amount of double sided tape, but this'll even work with some markers and a big roll of paper if you'd like it to.

Step 1: Design and Print

Click on the i on the upper left of the attached images to download them in full size (or you can save the links here and here). These were designed for the inside and outside of Canida's office (looking in on her is looking at the extended edition of Duck Mouse Taxidermy and from her perspective she's watching The Hallway)

I measured her doorway and designed the prints to cover the glass panel inset in the door. The images were stitched together in Photoshop from a number of screen grabs from Youtube. I just erased the video portion, put the screencaps on separate layers, and moved them until they all synced up. Then, I scaled the entire image until it was the same width and height as my doorway measurements.

That is cool. What if you strapped a computer monitor and a hidden webcam to it? Then placed it on the outside of the door.

Or put a mirror in, I guess :p
munchman in reply to breadinaboxApr 6, 2010. 4:41 PM
Um... yeah... that could also work... ehh... um. Oops.

You should make this 2-sided and on the side that you see when your in your office, leave it saying "The hallway/." From the side that the people in the hallway see when they look into your office, put "Matt's Office."

It's cool that you said it's cool. That's cool.

This is beyond cool. This is a great idea and could be used for rogue advertising, may I suggest trying to take your idea to the marketing execs at YouTube...
bofthem (author) in reply to instructing tablesDec 24, 2007. 9:31 PM
Haha thanks... you mean Google. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much room for advertisement in Youtube... I don't think there's a person on earth that hasn't heard of it.
joejoerowley in reply to bofthemNov 15, 2007. 12:20 PM
I think it is cooler that you think it cool that I said it was cool. Even cooler! Like dry ice!

Very nice idea! Really original! I can't wait to make mine.
bofthem (author) in reply to StarmanFNov 14, 2007. 7:18 PM
Thank you. This seems to be popular... maybe I should find a way to make it a bit more permanent. It'd probably make a pretty funny shower curtain, too.
StarmanF in reply to bofthemNov 14, 2007. 7:46 PM
After you said shower curtain a bunch of ideas poped into my head like a youtube mirror but I dont know how that would work.
bofthem (author) in reply to StarmanFNov 15, 2007. 3:07 PM
hrm. You might want to think about etching glass using paper cutouts and etchant. You make a stencil for your glass, and then apply it to something like a mirror. That stencil lets you paint on an acid that etches a frosted surface onto the glass. You can then paint this frosted area with ink, and it will stick, but will wipe off of the smooth glass. So you could paint a translucent Youtube mirror, if you'd like.
StarmanF in reply to bofthemNov 16, 2007. 8:24 AM
I think I'm going to make a translucent mirror. Thanks.

Hilarious! Should've taken pictures of Eric & Christy's faces when they first saw it, though ;-) Now..... if only I had a giant printer like Instructables does... (too much paper otherwise)...
bofthem (author) in reply to T3h_MuffinatorNov 14, 2007. 7:18 PM
I'm sure you could sacrifice a few trees and use a rasterbater to print out a huge rasterized youtube window. Think of the kicks and the chicks. They were appreciative but not hilarious. If they'd exploded upon exposure to the signs, it would have been photo worthy.

bofthem (author) in reply to zjharvaNov 14, 2007. 7:13 PM
Intro theme from "The Office." I wasn't expecting to find it within thirty seconds of searching for "office mp3." It was like the song leapt onto my computer.

That's awesome! I absolutely love the idea. Thanks for brightening my day.

Glad I could do so. I was considering doing one of a Veoh player, but I'm sure people wouldn't recognize it with any content playing in it... I'd just have to have a perpetual buffering screen.
