I recently broke my night light as I dropped it...so I needed a night light, and after a bit of searching etc, I thought why not make a zip tie cube night light! The light was small but provided enough brightness for me!

I had one challenge to face...the challenge was weather to power it by battery, AC power slot, or by USB...I decided that USB was the easiest because I usually play some music all night long and my pc is on, so I decided to power it via USB!

I needed a way to scare my friend, and after thinking about it, I decided to use this to scare my friend, andit worked! It was midnight and as he woke up to go to the bathroom, I turned the light on from a distance, and as it kept changing colors and brightness, I put up some scary music (Lucky we were having a sleep over, and his parents were not there!) And then he was so scared that he wet his pants!

I turn this on and leave it towards the wall at night which creates really awesome projections of light on the wall!

Some times the zip ties went in too much and I had some minor problems, but they were easily dealt with!

Here is a video of the finished product! Hope you like it!

So lets get started!

I have a few things i did different:
- soldered wires (tape didn't work)
-added plaster of paris base for support and wire protection
-since i have a laptop i plugged it into a ipad charger

Just some ideas to help others! Great project!
vishalapr (author)  hallen3 years ago
i liked the idea of using plaster of paris...will try that out soon...hpw about posting some pics of your zip light?
dont know if its a good idea- the plaster turned a little yellow around the wires. pics will have to wait due to my memory card not working- will get 1 soon (hopefully)

Would this work with a usb hub? Like if you attatched more than one light to a hub, then connected the hub to a switch and a battery. I know it would be easiier to connect it straight to a battery without usb, but I want to keep the wire visibility to a minimum, and then if the hub thing works, can add and remove as I please.
vishalapr (author)  Kadoodle3 years ago
Why not just make 4 of these and connect the 4 (How many ever your hub can support) USB wires to the hub and then just connect the hub to your pc's USB port! They won't be as bright but it will still work! And yes from the hubs wire you can take out the red and black and connect them to + and - of your battery and add a switch on the - side....or the + side but I prefer the - side...

Good luck! And if it works please post a pic or two on this ible in the comments! Thanks!

i tried doin this, but my leds got burnt by powering up using usb. pls suggest me a solution
attach 100 ohm resister wth ur LED
vishalapr (author)  adutt13 years ago
Are those LEDs rated for 5V?

Maybe use a 1K Ohm Resistor?

To give further details on what exact resistor to use you will need to give me your LEDs details like Rated voltage for the LED and how much current etc...
suggest me a led which doesnt need a resistor please.?
vishalapr (author)  adutt13 years ago
the LED link I gave in the materials part of this ible does not need a resistor!
adutt13 years ago
i used a random one. no idea abt the ratings. Which led did u use? u used a resistor too?

This may be a stupid question, but I'm not electruc savvy. I have a string of LED Christmas lights. Could I possibly use one of those? I'd really like to make one; they look so neat!
vishalapr (author)  PseudoJunk3 years ago
Are they somewhat like this :

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=LED+christmas+lights&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=JyM&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&prmd=ivns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1366&bih=579&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=5857345523842605137&sa=X&ei=R4szTqvKJs2UOt-evf0L&ved=0CIIBEPMCMAQ

If so then you can just ply out an LED (Might be hard sometimes) and then use that LED with the + and - Leads!

But I would recommend just buying multicolor LEDs that I gave a link in the materials...

And if you do make it then don't forget to post a picture of it as a comment!
Thanks!

nice way of using the ties. Good job
vishalapr (author)  ramhardikar3 years ago
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
theese would be cool inside a ping-pong ball also
vishalapr (author)  akagoldminer3 years ago
Yeah! Might actually try that but presently do not have ping pong balls anywhere in my house so...
Looks GREAT! The picks of the light on the wall look very interesting. How did you get the rainbow effect in the one shot?
vishalapr (author)  RedneckEngineer3 years ago
Yeah at night when I leave it on facing the wall the awesome patterns keep being projected on the wall and it looks really awesome...what I was thinking of doing was attaching the cube on a motor and powering it with a battery coz when its on a motor it turns...and the those amazing patterns on the wall will be spinning amazing patterns!

Do you have any ideas on how I can either improve the item or improve my presentation? Because any ideas will be appreciated!
The motor idea would look really cool but since it uses USB I don't know how you could do it. If it was batt then I could see doing it. You could instead place this over some type of spinning mirror that is off set to make the pattern move and change. Kind of like haveing a tilted CD rotating around it to reflect in differant directions. Just an idea.
vishalapr (author)  RedneckEngineer3 years ago
Yr idea is wayy better! I will probably try it...! Soon!
vishalapr (author)  RedneckEngineer3 years ago
I got this really weird sort of mirror like thing in me garage and wanted to see how it can work...so I attached it onto one side of the led...and that is the place we get the rainbow effect...but then I didn't really like it so...I removed it later on...
Now this is Awesome!!!! Great Job!
vishalapr (author)  BladeFyre Studios3 years ago
But I think yours is wayyyy better....even though I really like mine....I have made a lot of night lights/lamps but this is my most favorite one because it gives me the perfect amount of light and the wall looks glorious when I turn it on at night!
I think this is worth 5 Stars!! Way to go!
