Here are two links to help with strategy:

http://monopolynerd.wordpress.com - an interesting collection of tactics and general monopoly strategy

http://pandora.dyndns.biz/monopoly/simulator.html - a free, web-based monopoly simulator! This can be used as a tool for determining how different color groups compare to eachother.

durring the end game though, it can be better to stay in jail instead of running the risk of landing on other people's stuff.

I find the best way to win is to cheat.

The Dark Blue and Purple color groups are actually the least landed on color groups. Take a look at this:

The orange color group is the most commonly landed on color group, because of their relation with Jail. Reds come second, with Illinois being the most commonly landed on property. Railroads also have a high chance because they are always within reach of a dice roll. It is a common misconception that dark blues are the best, just because they have the highest rent. If you take a look at the URL that I pasted earlier, you will see that they are not landed on very often. It also takes $2750 to build up to hotel on them, so unless you stop at a few houses, you'll drain all your cash by building on them.

So you are basically saying that I should buy everything besides the red and the green ones?
And then in the pictures you say that I should buy those too if I can.

I disagree with jail. Early on its better to get out of jail, but once all of the properties are taken, you're better off staying in Jail as often as you can. A lot of people believe that whilst you're in jail, you can't claim on any properties that people land on. This is untrue. That rule was manufacturered by people who barely read the rules as a means of not paying the people who are in jail. Stay in jail as long as you can, it will avoid you having to pay when you land on mansions. Just make sure you get the orange properties for when someone else gets in jail, as they are the most frequently landed on properties once they get out of jail. Properties worth buying: stations, Pink, Orange, Yellow, and if you already have some, try for red (chance card moves you to stations, pink, dark blue, and red properties, and it makes it harder for players to survive without hitting your properties). To be fair, you should really go all out and snatch anything you can, especially when playing with more than 1 other person. Otherwise, auction the house and get it cheap. This puts you in a good trading position later on and can block a lot of early builds that could potentially put you out of the game early.

Yes we know how to play Monopoly (for hours) but you haven't given us any tips for winning. E.g. "if I land on a property should I buy it?" Mortgaging, houses, hotels etc. ? L

I usually take the "buy everything in sight" strategy. Another tip: In the instructions for monopoly, if a person lands on a property and chooses not to buy it, it can be auctioned off for the highest price. It's possible to get some good deals that way.
