last year we moved into a new apartment. one of the interesting things in this apartment was that -beside that it was really a lot of work to make it usable- it had an exit onto a roof (though you have to go through the toilet room...). this summer i decided to build a terrace on it. it's not really legal to do this without asking, but i didn't touch any walls so if someone wants me to remove it i can do that without having done any damage.

Step 1: The Space

in the middle of the space where the terrace was planned there is a rooflight dome of the shop below. thus the floor had to be built around it. parts of the construction for the terrace floor can already be seen on the pic.

Step 2: Floor Construction

the under-construction of the floor was built of used wood connected with steel angles.

Step 3: Details

some details of the construction:

- the construction had to be a bit lower than the enclosure of the rooftop light to ensure that it's all the same height when the floor boards are added.

- the feet of the construction stand on a layer of corc to protect the roof of the shop.

Step 4: Material

now i was able to calculate the material needed for the rest of the terrace. since the place is not exposed to heavy winds i decided to make everything as light as possible.

Step 5: Roof Construction

the idea was to build a roof and set it up afterwards for easier adjustment of the roof angle. this is the construction done with wood of 24x48 mm.

Step 6: Setting Up the Roof

here you can see the completed roof construction leaned against the wall. in the second pic it is already lifted up and the "feet" are mounted.

Step 7: Mounting

...now mounting the "feet" to the bottom-construction...

Step 8: Floor

... adding the floor...

Step 9: Roof

... and closing the roof with some plastic stuff. piece by piece is screwed on the wood. of course always ordered in a way that rain can't get in (slide the lower under the top one).

Step 10: Heaven

that's it. now i can lie on my new terrace and watch heaven...

what is left is to secure everything that my little son won't fall down.

Step 11: It's Gone....

This year the construction was taken down because this front of the house is being renovated. So the thing was in use for 13 years now with only one repair (a brick fell from the top of the building and crashed through the roof. luckily nobody was outside at that moment). I didn't expect that it would stay for so long :)
