thanks for your comments. yes the 7805 from maplin will do the job. most bicycle dynamo's i've seen are rated 3 watts 6 volts, and power(watts)=current(amps)xvoltage(volts) so that makes the current half an amp or 500mA

Idea: This could be of use in the developing world where they need power for their mobiles. They could make them using your guide from old scrap parts?

Will this 5v voltage regulator do, I can get it from a local store. But it does say 1A, whereas my dynamo is higher.
