Step 1: Materials

Requirements

-PVC tube: diameter of 1 cm (0.39 inch); Length can range from 20 to say 100 cm (7.9 to 40 inch). Longer barrels are more accurate, but harder to carry around in combat and require a longer breathe to operate.
-magazine page
-adhesive tape
-a pair of scissors
-sandpaper

Hey i just wanted to know your input to the question that Higgs Boson, myself, and another one of our friends are all asking. What can be done to make the blowguns better at this point? Yours and ours are practically identical, except for the darts. Even with the best darts we can make, they still only ever shoot accurately at a max 35 feet. What do you think?
bcavaciuti in reply to freeza36Mar 3, 2013. 2:19 PM
if you make yours out of metal(copper or aluminum) about 4-5ft depending on your breathe add a mouth peice out of plastic and duct tape or glue on a small funnel (i use a small latex kitchen funnel with the spout cut off and hot glued to the end) and look at some nail, wire, disposable craftknife darts you can even go hunting with them with an average range of 50 to 100 feet :) i am waiting till summer to remake mine and am gonna ask a local farmer if im allowed to hunt on his land after ive got pinpoint accuracy

I don't like using a mouthpiece. I tried a couple.

HOW LONG SHOULD THE PIPE BE
casvandegoor (author) in reply to SPYBOOMJul 11, 2009. 2:12 PM
about 20 to 30 cm for this instructable. But often real blowguns are much longer. Check out this instructable.

Why do not use normal copy paper?
casvandegoor (author) in reply to VatorNov 26, 2010. 1:25 PM
You can use copy paper. I shouldn't have said "NOT normal copy paper" (I published this instructable a long time ago)

Advantages using magazine paper:
-Cones are easier to make
-Cones are stronger
-Cones remain usable when they're moist (from breath)

Have fun!

Put a nail in the end and push it down with a long screwdriver, then drop in some resin. Perfect for hunting!

We made several 4 foot long pvc pipe blow dart guns.... Very, VERY accurate.... We made the darts out of electrical nut covers(the yellow ones) and hand ground metal darts..... Very cool indeed....

This reminds me of a story of one of my classmates and an impromptu blowgun. he used one of the big plastic pixie stick tubes and a tack. unfortunately for him, he inhaled instead of exhaled, and swallowed the tack.

the tube is still posted on our science teacher's bulletin board.

great instructable!

 just my 2 cents
instead of paper, duct tape works well.
you can also use a pen cap from a marker- it fits snuggly
Deep Blue says: Sep 27, 2009. 12:46 PM
making is spelt wrong
xxxxiii1 says: Aug 25, 2009. 6:05 PM
You can use the darts more often if you reinforce the end with tape
aoehero says: Jul 27, 2009. 5:54 AM
If you roll a pin or better yet a needle into the dart they become formidable. Or you can just throw the dart for effect.
mastermaker says: Jul 18, 2009. 11:08 PM
hahaha,my blowguns are a bit more complex and im in middle school so my friends like em a lot. The first thing to do is take apart 2 pens so you have perfectley circular tubes and tape them apart as good and as straight as you can, then you can wrap some sort of thread around the middle as a handle, but thats optional. The second thing you need is the dart,i usualley just roll up a nice cone of paper then after sticking a staples in the top, some tissue and glue and tape,i get a solid dart that shoots a really far distance and can stab into things(never shoot the teacher!) I sometimes can use these because there a lot more secretive and sometimes i use dummey darts on my friends(they arent sharp but they sting like hell even with thicker clothing on) and even after modifying one ive came up with a gun i can fit into my mouth that is rubber-band loaded that can shoot sharp staples 20+ feet and completeley undetectable, im good at this stuff beleive me
DanDiego says: Apr 9, 2009. 11:48 AM
I have made blow guns that shoot standard push pins! Although they do not look aerodynamic, they fly point first and will stick in a cork board or even drywall. Just take a push pin to your local hardware store and buy a piece of tubing that is just slightly bigger than the diameter of the push pin. Make the tube at least two feet long. Hold the tube almost level but slightly tilted down away from you before you insert the push pin (pointy-end first). Be very careful not to take a breath with the tube in your mouth or you could swallow the push pin! Range of the blow gun varies with the length. Blow hard and you will see the push pin fly and stick into your target. With practice you can get quite accurate.
ellisgeek says: Mar 26, 2009. 11:59 AM
um..... how do u make the "darts"
Kazeem in reply to ellisgeekApr 6, 2009. 2:29 PM
Spiral rolls of paper... like... where you roll it from the corner... when u put it in your gun, you can then mark where it touches the edge, with a felt tip, and cut round there, to keep it sealed well in the gun, but not too tight
themakeitguy says: Sep 29, 2008. 7:58 PM
nice job on the dart shape! putting a nail through the tip is a bit better than a coat hanger, and you can try different sizes :P
illdoyourdrugs says: May 14, 2008. 1:01 PM
Not bad but a real blowgun uses needles. you want your projectile to stick. Nice non-lethal one though.
zobbs in reply to illdoyourdrugsSep 22, 2008. 3:14 PM
acually needls are to brital use small tacking nails
illdoyourdrugs in reply to zobbsSep 22, 2008. 6:14 PM
Ive used them with no problem. The one i made that i was reffering to was a very small portable one using a bic pen as the barrel.
PKTraceur in reply to illdoyourdrugsAug 24, 2008. 4:19 PM
it does not use "needles" as you call them. they are "Darts"
casvandegoor (author) in reply to illdoyourdrugsMay 15, 2008. 6:06 AM
My father teached me to make these when I was 6 or 7. Ideed the longer blowguns with iron pins are the 'real' ones. But I liked to make this simple one an instructable. I did tried a blowgun with needles, which was fun, though you could not battle with someone else.
ruiqim in reply to casvandegoorJun 16, 2008. 6:08 PM
Yeah, right. Your father "teached" you how to make these.
bennor3 says: May 2, 2008. 7:18 PM
