Fiberglass insulation is not needed. You can use cotton (100%) as a substitute for the fiberglass insulation.

Haha.Once my friends brother barbequed a cat and gave it to his teacher and she said it tasted like chicken.

I like your design, it's simple, easy to build and materials are always available. thanks for sharing your idea. Godspeed !

An alternative to punching holes in the small can is to use a can opener (like with the bigger can) but push from the inside out. That leaves a circle of outward facing triangular tabs at the top of the small can. These tabs rub against the inside wall of the outer can, keeping the inner, smaller can centered. Thanks for the instructable.

thanks so much for the great tutorial - you're going to be the star performer for our Scouts! We're bringing in the laptop and presenting your tutorial to make our stoves for camp... hey, work smarter, not harder - you've already done all the hard work! And, don't worry, we'll be sure to teach them to say "vermiculite" a whole bunch!!!

can it use bioethanol 40% as the fuel?...
lennyb (author) says: Dec 27, 2008. 4:33 PM
40% seems a little dilute. you can always try it and see

Hey how do you light the stove?
lennyb (author) says: Jul 23, 2008. 3:31 AM
just a match or a lighter is all thats needed. nothing fancy. as for the fuel in your other question its fondue fuel that i get at the local dollar store. you can also use gas line antifreeze or methy hydrate. rubbing alcohol also works but try to get the stuff that has less water in it. dont use gasoline it will explode and melt the tins
Superninjacamper941 says: Jul 22, 2008. 5:55 PM
Also what kind and what brand of Fuel do you use?
leebryuk says: May 21, 2008. 8:27 PM
Nice job. One step missing though. You must have a hungry cat nearby. It's good form to feed one's cat with cat food being used for a stove.
lennyb (author) says: May 22, 2008. 12:51 PM
no problem there . we have two cats and they are pigs.{not really though} i usually make 40 dollars a year recyling the aluminum catfood cans so that will give you an idea how many. actually some of the food coming out of the pricier cans looks good enough for me to eat.. lol hope they still make that when im retired unless i get rich or sumptin.
FunkLiberationFront says: Apr 21, 2008. 10:23 AM
Nice job. I made this same one a while back, but I need to add the aluminum tape to it like you did, that would improve it immensely. I also created a pot stand for it with a loop of chicken wire, works great.

hehehe i thought it was a stove to cook kittys in!

Doesn't most fiberglass treated with chems that are toxi when burned?
lennyb (author) says: Mar 9, 2008. 11:03 AM
only if it were coated in resin. this is the spun glass wool and whatever non glass chemicals in it will burn away with the first use. for the first burn id recomend well ventilated conditions but with a stove of this type i dont expect many folks will try to use it in an enclosed space.
i make shooting things says: Jan 31, 2008. 4:12 PM
You can use cotton balls instead of fiberglass it wont last as long but might be easer to find/use.
lennyb (author) says: Feb 1, 2008. 3:55 PM
actually the fibreglass is better for a wick than cotton for the following reasons. 1 the cotton will need to be replaced everytime you use it. the fibreglass will last the life of the burner. 2 the cotton will contribute carbon to the flames and soot up your best hobo pots. fibreglass after the first burn in will add nothing. 3 people will want to use your wick supply to apply makeup or as beards for santa claus if you use cotton. with fibre glass the same is less likely.
i make shooting things says: Feb 1, 2008. 4:34 PM
Iv been to reuse the cotton several times so far. I created a slide show of my stove (using NK5's instructions)
I did make a few mods to his design.
PyroMaster007 says: Jan 31, 2008. 1:04 PM
why is the insulation neccesarry?
lennyb (author) says: Jan 31, 2008. 3:21 PM
the insulation is to provide a wick one that wont burn up the flame burns longer than if just the fuel alone were used. i tried it both ways
KNOTTYMAN says: Dec 28, 2007. 12:06 PM
I used to make camp stove out of carboard, parafin wax,a piece of rope and a tuna can. I like this one. vermiculite

A couple of points: A pinch of salt in the alcohol will make it visible. I get my best performance with denatured alcohol. Get it at any "big box" store like Home Depot or Lowes in the paint department.

thanks for the tip
