Hello guys,

This instructable is basically about choosing "Options" in Year 9. Options are choices which a student makes in their 9th Year, to decide which subjects they, themselves actually want to learn.

I have made this instructable because, my time to choose my options is very near!!! I've just started Year 9. So i thought I might aswell give some tips to other people, who are going to choose their options.

Options are generally in U.K highschools, But this instructable can also be very helpful for "electives" which are very similar to options i believe, but are in Schools across America.

Step 1: Why Are The Options So Important?

I'm sure if you go to a high school in England, you would of heard, or will be hearing eventually
"The Options Talk".

The Options Talk is, where most of Year 9 is gone by talking about Options. You hear it from teachers, professional career advisors, parents, and even sometimes fellow classmates and friends.

Why do they go on about it eh?

Well because it's SO DAMN important. Thats why. These Options are going to be the subjects you study for the next 2 years of high school, up untill college. This means you can pick brand new subjects which you find intresting, keep some that you enjoy, and drop the ones that
you dislike ( oh yes! ).
However, you still have to do the core subjects :

Maths, Science, English....and a recently added one R.S. :-(

So if they are that important, then you should not make any mistakes.

i only get to pick 3.... makes it a lot harder

do we have to do all 3 science's (Biology,Chemistry,Physics) otr can we drop 1? thank you!!!!

Hi, i'm in the 8th grade going to the 9th and nows the time i have to pick my options, so can you please help me! I live in an Arab country but in an English school following the British curriculum and i have 5 options, i just can't make myy mind up for one of them, here are my options:
Option 1: Chemisrty
Option 2: Physics
Option 3: Biology
Option 4 : ????
Option 5: History
As you can see oiption for i am not sure of, should i take Bussiness Studies or English Litrature? I am planning to be a Doctor, and i am hoping to study in Europe or Canada. SO can you please help me decide, i want to make sure the subjects i am picking will be accepted and still count, so when i go to the university they will accept me!
Please contact or reply as soon as you can!
Thank you so much, i really do appreciate it!
Hey, i just wanted too know, what options i should pick to be a nursery teacher? I have already handed in my options sheet and i picked art, drama, product design, and i have actually forgotten the last one! But i dont think thats right at all, But at my school they are acctualy giving year nine students the chance to fill out their options form again, because so many are wanting to re-do them, but could someone please give me some advice on which options to pick ? :) Thanks x
Oh don't worry. The options at this stage don't really have much of an impact IF you want to go into a form of teaching.

Though if ya want to be a nursery teacher, make sure you pick a ChildCare A level/ B tech course at college.

Better yet some schools have cildcare as an early course. So if you have the chance to pick it now. Do so. Other than that your choices are fine :)

Good Luck!
hi i want to be a teacher when i am older and i dont no what options to take i am not in year nine yet but i will be soon and i want =ed to know what to take thanks xoxo :)
Oh hey. I don't visit this site much anymore, so it's lucky I caught your comment :D.

Well I guess atm it doesn't matter too much. But when Picking A levels your subjects should be more specific.

Anyway Year 9 options. Depends what type of teacher you want to be. For example If you would want to teach Art, you would obviously need to pick Art, and vice versa for like Music, Language etc....

Make sure the subject you WANT to TEACH -You PICK!
The other additional subjects don't matter too much.

Good luck.

:)
i am choosing my options soon, and i wanted to know, what i have to choose to be a beautician. do you know ??
I am choosing my options soon, and I wanted to know if I want to be a translator would I have to take triple language or just 2 languages of my own choice?
This is the crapest day ever!!!!!!!! My school SUCKS! I only get to pick TWO options for my GCSEs and i am soooo mad about it!
I chose a few options around 3 days ago, it was just a small sheet, not the larger one, I chose Music (instruments, preferably guitar), double woodwork/metalwork, and history, and I find this instructable appealing and helpful, stars from me!
Thanks man.
in the uk, they are secondary schools, not high scools
For us, they called it High school because secondry school didnt sound right! And im in the UK. How many oprions was everyone else abled to pick? We could only pick 4. I picked Art, French, German and Drama. Wish I could of had more. (too many cores though! >:@)
in my school, you do 4 too. there are a couple of ppl who do 5, but i think you have to teach yourself one though.
In my school I think we have around 6 to choose, Iunno properly yet though.
In some ways I wish I could do more than 4 but in others, im glad i couldnt, too much work!
Yep same only 4 for me aswell. Art, Business I.T, History,Graphics what I picked.
I know. But I call them High Shcools.
at my school in aus we get 3 i picked electronics, metal work, and it and computing
wow
im in yr 9
just done me sats =[[[
you go to a private school, don't you?
(you called it rs instead of re)
i only got 4 options =[[[
Private? (laughs!!!!) No a public school. RS is the same as RE. Different at schools.
9th year is 9th grade right?
Technically i think. Yeah.
My advice would be don't choose geography unless you hate your social life. The coursework for both history and geography bog you down unbelievably, but geography especially. It may help to choose something that you find fun as well, as that's what you're going to enjoy and likely be most interested in. Don't however, take drama for the sole reason "Well it's good fun and a laugh". Subjects change completely when you study GCSE.
LOl..

I HATE geography, So damn much!!!!!!

btw congrats on choosing your A-Levels.
I think its not the subject (I find geography and history easy outside of school), but the type of teacher that would want that job. I have pre ap history that sucks, but my NM history is awesome because it is taught by an environmental studies teacher. Its just the mindset of the teacher
Exactly. I really dislake my geog teach. And prefer my history teach so more!
Thanks :-)
Great to see an instructable like this, it's on topic (because you did it and not a hundred years ago either) and it's stuff like this that make instructables ten tiems better, sure we can hack anything but we don't know what to do in real life... I think adding some stuff like this is great feel like doing a collaboration on A-levels?
I'll give you a hand if you want one, I just chose my A-levels.
Great just need multiple opinions to get the ball rolling on that one becasue you have more choice and less choice amounts... usually it's only 3 or 4...
Yeah, we got 4, 3 plus one that we have to drop once we enter year 13 (i.e we only gain an AS Level in it).
same as us unless you do certain coursework heavy subjects like art, then 3 is the 'suggested' option
