In this instructable i am going to show you how to make a steering wheel for pc games

EDIT: i am going to uplad a video with the steering wheel in action ;)

Step 1: What You Will Need

1) a cheap usb game controller : http://cgi.ebay.com/Dual-Shock-USB-PC-Controller-Game-pad-Joypad-Joystick-/260499412103?pt=PCA_Joysticks_Game_Controllers&hash=item3ca6f99487

2) a small pvc pipe

3) one 100k potentiometer (i found mine in an old radio)

4) a steering wheel (or anything that looks like a steering wheel)

5) some wires

TOOLS:

1) soldering iron

2) solder

3) hot glue gun

4) screwdriver

Step 2: Taking Game Conntroler Apart

take apart the controller using a small screwdriver and take the circuit out of the case

Step 3: Soldering Wires

now we have to solder and also desolder some wires

see pictures:

Step 4: Making the Wheel

drill a hole to the pvc pipe to get two wires going from the steering wheel stand to a swich on the weel

next glue the pvc to the wheel

on the other side of the pvc put a hard pice of plastic and drill a hole for the potentiometer

Step 5: The Base

take a small pice of wood and super glue the potentiometer

than super glue the pice of wood to the base

and finaly super glue the potentiometer end to the pvc pipe end

Step 6: Access to the Other Buttons

on the game controller there are 14 buttons and 2 analog sticks and right now we are only using 1 button and 1 analog stick

if you want to give access to the other analog stick and to the other buttons you have to solder two wires in each button in the game controller

see pictures:

Step 7: Output

after you have solder wires to each button you have to connect then in one other game pad as seen in the pictures

Step 8: Test

after you have done , you have to check all the connections before you plug it in your computer

next you have to test and see if all the buttons are working and ofcourse thet the wheel is working perfecly

Step 9: New Design

I started making a new steering with with pedals and a gear box. i don t know if i will upload a new instructable but i will post many pictures and video here about the new one.

Good instructable here! Altough, I was more enthusiastic to see you were/are(?) about to build an improved complete sistem! I couldn't find any yet, but I'm looking forward to build one, based on the steer I already have from Logitech (without the original pedals, but with some older ones I got), to make it able to have a clutch, gear box and if possible, 900º steering! Yes, like the official one for Gran Turismo.

Do you know any specifications to make it able to work on a Playstation 3? Can be with the USB cable... but with a wireless one would be great too!!

I started building a new one like a year ago but had some problems with the streering mechanic and stopped building it. now that is summer and i have way too much free time, i will try and completely make it. I have an instructable made with my progress so far but its not published. on the new one i am trying to add a 360 degree steering with gears but I cant make it work properly. I made a 7 speed gearbox and a new wheel already. I have to make the pedals and fix the steering mechanic and then I will publish it

the wires comming from the pot are soldered in the game controller board where one of the analog stick is soldered. The pot is just a regular pot you find in many electronic devices. This is not a good intructable i know i am working on a new one with a better wheel rersponce and even pedals and gear box. i will upload a video on this particular instructable showing my new steering wheel

I have to disagree with you, this Instructable is probably the first one where I understood, and had all the parts to make something. I usually quickly skim the steps because 90% of the time I know I can't put together the Instructable, exit out, and move on or buy from ebay if possible. This is a great Instructable, especially for novices like me. I'll post my wheel when I'm done making it.

Does the potentiometer have to be linear?
OK thanks.I will look forward your new instructable :))
How to make the potentiometer to rotate in 2 directions. When you connect to the joystick in the direction of gain moves in the opposite stands like it move. Thank you.
hi i have built a very good steering wheel . this one was for testing so i dont realy remember how i exactly made it so as now christmas come i will make a new intructable with more informations becouse now i dont have much time ;P
